Mauritius, a remote island republic made up of four main islands and located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, has become the most prosperous country in Africa and the first to be listed by the United Nations as a country with very high human development.
Thanks to a reform process launched in the early 1970s, this small country has become one of the most important financial and tourist hubs on the African continent. This is the story of the greatest economic success story of the entire African continent, a country that now aspires to become a kind of bridge between Asia and Africa.

It's not only external actors, being an underdeveloped country with lots of resources festers domestic corruption, because it's easy for a small group of elites to sell off these resources and use the earnings to pay off their cronies and supress the people. Having little to no resources forces leaders to help their people to be more productive, which ultimately results in everyone being better off. Of course, development nations also have an interest in keeping these places underdeveloped and corrupt, because the resources are cheaper to obtain if the state doesn't have any bargaining power.

@@dh510 fair but name a country in sub-saharan Africa with natural resources or in a strategic location that hasn't had significant outside meddling in the post-colonial era. Congos first President was immediately assassinated in a US backed coup, Angola was the site of a heavily Soviet supported proxy war, Somalia flip flopped between Western and Soviet influence both wanting to secure the strategic entry to the Gulf Aden. Most if not all of the corrupt leaders got into place and were supported by one sphere of influence or the other.

@Art Man Singapore was lucky outside of then cosmopolitan city it started as underdeveloped swampy location with a relatively small centralized population and grew to prominence while China was weak. It's militarily Western aligned and while it's neighbors to the north and south were rocked by communist insurgencies supported by China and brutal anti-communist purges supported by the West, Singapore was luckily able to avoid all that conflict. Had it have been bigger with a large urban rural divide would you have seen similar communist insurgencies it's difficult to know. Also it's independence was bloodless which helps as you don't have a bunch of armed groups vying for power in the early years of sovereignty.

So just because this channel may not be as unfair with their stories about Africa as the mainstream western media is; that doesn't mean that their stories are closer to the reality most Africans face on the continent.

Most African nations still have insanely corrupt governments and don't even have basic institutions. Until that changes, Africa will never develop. This channel has talked about all the industrialisation and innovation that is going on in the continent, anymore than that would be painting a fake image.

But the media has made it seem that the majority of the people of black African countries are living in terrible conditions. The Dark Continent troupe has dominated the mindset of most of the world for over 400 years. Now that there are so many Africans on social media. The world can get a different view of black African countries now instead of the one white supremacists have forwarded for generations.

it has a sizeable sub-Saharan . They have a special group called Mauritius Creole which is a mixture between Indian and Sub-Saharan African and then u have white Mauritians.

@@jamfold2956 it’s 67% Indian actually but yes the demographic is majorly Indian. But it’s closer to African than anywhere else that’s why it is an African country. It’s part of the African unnion and has a sizeable African population too. U are right that its success can be attributed as an Indian success story though rather than an African one.

Mauritius is an odd mix of Indian culture , colonial influences , and African. Part of the reason for its success is the adoption of European legal systems which protect property rights which attract people from richer but less reliable protections. You can probably guess those... The way they interact with each other is , to me at least, surprisingly African. In the last 25 years or so it has gone from 1950s UK with palm trees to , well, late 20th century and shifting into the 21st. That includes social attitudes too , not just economic. Bloody marvelous beaches , especially in the North, great diving!

In comparison, Mauritius is fairly homogenous to what many of us are used to but its strength seems to be that it can meld very different cultural influences from its past in constructive and realistic ways.

This island nation is doing well considering it's small size and resources. Other African nations have land borders to defend and complicated histories with colonization. I think this still shows how small nations can develop if they maintain stability and re-invest tourism profits and corporate tax haven profits back into the working class and civil society. Now if only the US would invest in our medical and education systems!

Mauritius can become a developed country because it tends to be separated from mainland Africa, not only separate but further so that Mauritius looks like Oceania countries in the Indian Ocean. the remote location allows for stability from problems like the refugee crisis/communist rebels/terrorists/etc

@@adalest. Cause 70% of the population is Indian descent and the predominant religion is Hinduism, so Indians feel close to Mauritius.

BTW, for anyone wondering, the 3% effective tax rate VisualPolitik talks about in this video is outdated. The 80% exemption is applicable on certain qualifying income such as foreign-sourced dividends and interest and business profit attributable to a Permanent Establishment of the GBC in a foreign country.

@india superpooper 2022 I also don’t like it when we get called little India because we are unique, it’s the same as when Western people say we can’t be African because we aren’t black. It’s silly. But, I also don’t harbor ill will against India and Indians. I have worked abroad and they are very similar to us and friendly. Leave politics out of it.

Mauritius is propped up by South Africa as it is part of the SADC and shares a shared past with Natal in South Africa during the colonial era. Many South African businesses are domiciled there for tax purposes and greater stability.

@tchad chad I'm referring to the man in the thumbnail, because that's something that even people who won't click on the video will see. The breakdown is 70% indians/30% blacks. And still, they should show someone that looks like the average citizen of a country. That's why I mentionned afrikaners in south africa, in case you didn't understand.

@@DirtyEdon oh yea Ofcourse it’s important for ethnic minorities need to be represented. As far as Indian Mauritians, some of them look mixed but most of them look unequivocally Indian. But it’s not important, they consider themselves Mauritians is all that matters.
