One of the largest monuments preserved from Ancient Rome, and one of the most visited sites in the city today, the Mausoleum of Hadrian (based on the earlier Mausoleum of Augustus) stands as a phenomenal example of Roman engineering and architecture, as well as a great example of reuse through the ages. The massive tomb, constructed and used by Hadrian, was employed by Roman emperors until the Severan dynasty. Thereafter, it was incorporated into the Aurelianic wall circuit, most famously used as a bastion in the Gothic Wars of the 530s; Procopius records ancient statuary being cast down on the Gothic army by Justinian's forces. Thereafter, its legacy was tied to the popes and Vatican, when the tomb was transformed into a castle, surrounded by bastions and moats, and adorned with magnificent papal apartments. I watched videos of Japan and as great as shogun castles, buddhist pagodas, shinto temples, city walls were, i happened to watch a video of the Rome Pallatine hillsjust after that with all the Roman architecture, and i think Roman architecture is just so much better, it makes you feel good just watching it. That balance of form and proportions and the flat roman bricks it is just incredibly beautiful. I really wished we still build residential houses exactly with that type of brick and architecture.

As someone who’s also visited some Shogun castles and large Buddhist monasteries in Japan I agree with you. One quibble though. At least on the island of Kiyushu the (at least) 50 foot deep and 40 foot across moats surrounding those castles were extremely impressive. They put most European moats that I’ve seen to shame!

Antoninus Pius isn't remembered for much more than being a placeholder between Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius. But...for a placeholder he had spine. Hadrian wasn't particularly liked by the Senate...he had offed several of them for various plots and they deemed him a potential tyrant, and were glad of his death. He had chosen Antoninus...a good, stolid member of the Senate as his successor with the caveat that he adopt Marcus Aurelius and his brother Lucius as HIS successors. Antoninus accepted, and did as a good "Pius" son does and called for the proper interment and deification of his adoptive father, Hadrian. The Senate didn't like that. They couldn't understand why a fellow Senator didn't understand their dislike of Hadrian. But, Antoninus pressed on...and gave the senate an ultimatum. "If you don't deify my father, Hadrian, why, that is a rejection of all his works and commands...including his choice of me as his heir. I guess that means you do reject me. And I will gladly step down, and the Army and its generals can choose the next Emperor." Needless to say the blood drained from the Senators' faces, as what Antoninus was suggesting was nothing less than Civil War. They deified Hadrian unanimously. Well played, Antoninus...well played.

Great presentation! I was in Rome about 21yrs ago and I remember seeing this massive structure which I found so impressive! I asked someone what it was and he told me "the Castel del Angelo" and that was all I really remember. I never forgot about it though. I can't tell you how happy I was when I saw your thumbnail. I am thrilled to have learned so much about this impressive structure!😁 By the way I just discovered your channel and subscribed.

Amazing that it survived the plundering of Rome especially the Catholic Church , no doubt anything of value marble or whatever would of been stripped and used in some church somewhere.

Should be restored as a tomb and mausoleum, and back to its original form in honour of Divus Hadrianus and the Severan dynasty tbh ;)

@@Jojo.255 if you do not live in Rome like me you cannot understand, the Vatican state possesses a huge amount of luxury properties in Rome on which it does not pay any tax due to a law that dates back to Mussolini, that tax burden falls on us citizens

Castel Sant’Angelo is on my list for my next trip to Rome! I didn’t know that Hadrian was buried in his magnificent column. I always learn something new every time I watch one of your extremely informative videos about Ancient Rome. My first trip to Rome and to the ancient Roman buildings in 1999 instilled such a desire to learn everything about this ancient culture and it’s buildings. Subsequent visits to Rome have only whetted my appetite to learn even more. Mille grazie, Darius.

Hi. Could you please tell us all where is it found in the ancient sources that these mausolea were covered in trees, planted on the top of them? That would be so unsafe, destructive of architecture below, and look counter productively odd. But if you know of any sources, please tell me/us all in a responding message here (unless there is none)

So, where's Hadrian? ....Is he still hanging around there? (Like, maybe, a pot of ashes labeled "Hadrian" or "Adrianus" or something, sitting on a shelf -- hopefully with its lid still on?) I'd imagine that such a thing would be like some gorgeous golden urn, with a label attached saying, "This is Hadrian -- 'Adrianos' for you Greek speakers. DON'T THROW AT THE GOTHS!!"

There are a number of egregious errors in this video: 1. Using Hadrian's and Augustus' mausoleums interchangeably (the presenter is clearly getting mixed up). 2. Describing quotation marks as parentheses. 3. Describing Hadrian's mausoleum as being in Trastevere - it is not. The most northern part of Trastevere is Ponte Principe Amedeo Savoia Aosta which lies to the south west of the Mausoleum of Hadrian.

Have a look at Mausoleum of Halikarnassus- by Mausolus (hence, the name).

Not corpses but ashes...after a while the Mausoleum became neglected..the urns containing the remains probably stolen or destroyed....today only the marble container for Agrippina urn is still extant..

Darius' accent is very American, not at all Italian, as if embarrassed to make the language sing. He refuses to accentuate the sharp T's in CasTel SanTangelo, is how I heard Italians pronounce it. And I believe he never mentions its odd architecture, as if constructed by contractors who did not know how to build a castle, one of the best preserved of Roman Medieval monstrosities still standing.

No, but there is a baptismal font in the Vatican that may have been the sarcophagus of Emperor Hadrian from the mausoleum though this is not confirmed by any means.

the perfect example of how colorless and empty is the online lesson. The videos on this channel are usually so engaging. This is like watching the writing of a chemistry formula - full of info but so boring.
