Here's the brilliant Heroes of Comedy documentary about the great comedian Max Miller circa 1995.
Long-running documentary series looking at some of the greatest and most famous names in British comedy.
Each episode focuses its attention on an individual comic or comedy act, profiling both their career and personal lives with anecdotes from family, friends, colleagues, and illustrated by video and audio clips of their work.
Max Miller (comedian - Thomas Henry Sargent (21 November 1894 - 7 May 1963), best known by his stage name Max Miller and also known as 'The Cheeky Chappie', was a British comedian who was widely regarded as the greatest stand-up comedian of his generation.[1] He made films, toured in revues and music hall, and sang and recorded songs, some of which he wrote. He was known for his flamboyant suits, his wicked charm, and his risqué jokes which often got him into trouble with the censors.

My late uncle had tons of cassette tapes of max miller. He was the first comedian I remember hearing as a kid. He once played at the Colchester playhouse back in the fifths. Now the playhouse is a pub but you can still see a photo of max miller on there wall.

Bob Monkhouse says in his autobiography that Max was very good to him, Bob used to hand around theatres selling jokes to comics when he was 14 or 15 & he also did standup at local clubs, Max came along to see him and tore his act apart giving Bob lots of advice on how to work his act up , a couple of years later Bob won a BBC radio audition ...

Funny man. If you listen to the old recordings of Max at the Holborn Empire you get a flavour of the atmosphere he created on stage. His style of comedy obviously looks dated,but he was very charismatic and was a forerunner of nearly all the stand-up comedians of the 1960s and 70s.

Roy Hudd said he didn't think Max had ever told the joke about meeting a woman on the narrow bridge, and not being sure whether to block her passage or toss himself off......well, I may be wrong, but I could have sworn I'd heard a recording of him telling that one. Also, I'm 99% sure I've heard him tell the one about getting on an underground train, and sitting next to a young lady, and when they come to a station, the young lady asking: "Excuse me, is this Cockfosters", and Maxie replied: "No madam. Miller's the name...eh!". (Which is quite near the knuckle, I would say).

Many people have said that you had to see Max 'live' to get him, that didn't come over on film or radio..

His films apart from this clip didnt catch him to doing his act,but his records are excellent and do capture his humour very well.

Rodney Rude was clearly influenced by Max Miller (and Roy Rene and others) - but Rodney lives in more permissive times, so, he could pioneer the truly blue material he is renowned for.
