Max Patch: Was the Camping Ban worth it?

On July 1st, 2021, Max Patch issued a camping ban on the bald, and limited the trail access due to over exposure and lack of responsibility from the hikers and campers. Today I decided to visit and see if the new restrictions have made an impact on the area. I was surprised and excited with what I found. A flourishing groundcover of blackberries, and signs of new wildlife already led me toward favoring the changes. what are your thoughts? I'd love to here what you guys think! see you soon!

Was heading home to Raliegh NC after a week of paddling the creeks in the Obed river system. Figured I would stay the night at Max Patch and check out Halebop comet. Stopped in Waterville Tennessee and got some beer. This was a week night so I figured I would have the place to myself. That place was packed. One guy had a nice motorized telescope at the parking lot. Hiked up to the top and there was another one up there. Lots of Buddhist monks up there banging gongs and blowing flutes. This was around midnight. Crazy!

They are seriously considering a permanent camping ban up there. I'm all for it. Plenty of room to camp for the through hikers in shelters and along the trail. I always thought the other campers up there were kind of lame, anyway.

Agreed. . . I do however think at hikers should be able to use it. . It's one of the most beautiful balds in nc. ,also 90 percent of a/t campers are smart enough to know not to camp on a bald. . . .colder/hotter/windier, no shelter for rain/ no place to dig a hole in private/no water source. . The thru hikers are absolutely not the problem.

I'm delighted with the ban!! Sad it had to happen but the health of the bald, grasslands, etc. are so worth it.

Back in the 70"s we went up there a lot. It was always pristine and beautiful. We took care of it, didn't trash it, and respected it for what it was.. Sad that there are always those that ruin everything for others. Glad that there is a ban now, maybe this will be preserved for those that actually care and respect nature.

I live five miles from Max Patch. I’ll go up there and pick up trash once a month during tourist season.

I agree with the ban, but it does suck that disrespectful campers ruined it for everyone. Used to camp there all the time with my buddies. Always cleaned up after ourselves, not hard to do. One of the most beautiful spots to wake up to!

Just discovered your channel! Where are you at the end of this video, with a mobile home in the background? Is it a mobile home park or a solo? Looking for a nice place to buy a mobile home in the area.

Wow, what a difference! Prior to the camping ban, I avoided Max Patch like the plague it looked like, even though I live in the local area. Now, after the camping ban, I would gladly visit and even bring guests to enjoy the much cleaner area.

I haven't gone in years,I didn't know about the camping ban. I might go back now. It was always such a disappointment how trashed and crowded it was.

Thanks for the footage! Looks way better and I also support the ban. I also wanted to mention that trout are UBER sensitive and need to be handled with care. Glad you ate these and hope they were good, but there's a high chance they would not survive the rest of the day after being drug onto the rocks and also handled with dry hands. Yes I know it sounds like I'm saying "but fish are sensitive too :(((", but the reality is fish mortality is a huge deal in easily-accessible creeks like this. Wet your hands before touching trout and try to keep them in the water during the release. I never knew it was such a big deal until moving to Colorado.

I am an avid outdoorsman and understand your concern for the trout. When I am fishing for stockies to put in my cooler I could really care less about the handling of the fish, but you would never catch me in native waters or catch and release fishing this hard, or with a treble. . . I do appreciate the knowledge. I'll always support advocacy for nature/wildlife. Have a good one. See ya out there!

I do as well. Do you think it should be permanent? What are some things in the future that can help with these problems?

Pack it in, pack it out. Leave no trace. Back when I had small young uns, I could herd at least 3 small children, a picnic lunch, blanket, assorted kites, and beach balls up the bald. At the end of the day I managed to herd same small children, picnic trash, blanket, and assorted toys back down the mountain. Seriously, cleaning up after yourself in a public place isn't all that hard. Locals did it for decades before the Patch was "discovered". It was honestly very rare to find trash up there. The USFS provides potties and trash cans down the mountain- neither of those things belong up top. They would just open the door to more littering and unsanitary practices. I'm all in favor of banning camping on the bald permanently.

I wish they'd ban tourism and transplants the community has been destroyed nature and wildlife running out of places while they build on every mountain and cliff they can while there's only nightly rentals and no where for folks to live who are from here
