You finally gave me a proper answer to a 34-year old mystery of mine. I was drafted #1 in the 1987 U14 little league in my Ohio hometown. I had speed and accuracy at that age. A few of the older kids got to me and told me I needed to develop a couple of "junk balls" before high school, so they taught me an improper curve as well as very incorrect slider. I wanted to have a slider because the top pitcher the year before had one, and he was un-hittable. (In hindsight, it was because he hit puberty in 6th grade and was therefore capable of speed no one else our age could generate - yet. A baseball needs a minimum velocity to break into the catcher's mitt, a fact that was lost on me at that age). So I was taught to grip it like a fastball but throw it "sideways" with a quick snap of the wrist at release. I wasn't allowed to throw junk balls in practice so I saved it for the game. A few bounced into the batter's box and one flew over the backstop. I was quickly pulled from the game and very publicly embarrassed as both my coach and my dad scolded me when I got back to the bench. I never regained my confidence and accuracy that season and decided to quit baseball after that summer. I often wonder how things would have turned out had I just listened to the coach and stuck with fastballs. But thanks to you, I no longer wonder how to throw a slider correctly! Too bad I am way past the age now to even attempt one.

As a guy with a high/11oclock release point I found throwing a slider worked better when stepping a bit shorter and letting my arm go ‘across my body’ to get the horizontal snap

Real good explanations. As you said , not only for the slider but also in your curveball clip , get out and throw it. Get a good catcher / partner for feedback , you gotta throw it. Thanks , you teach well.

At either of the bends on the horse shoe, place the middle finger there against the seam to get more of a push off. This also enables more of a downward break also. The biggest things in throwing the Slider consistently are 1. Stay behind the Baseball, 2. Release the Slider out in front. 3. Throw it Downhill

I threw a slider and a knuckle curve, the grips were essentially the same, I choked the ball (held like a two seam) on my slider my pointer finger didn't touch the ball and my follow through was to my left hip (3/4 arm slot) my curve ball was held same way except with the pointer finger nail in the ball and my release was more of a "pulling a string" so follow through was the feeling of trying to reach my left knee... Plenty of difference in movement out of the same arm slot. That's just how I did it

@ZeTugz

this might be super late, come down on the seams a bit. By this i mean, if the U shape of the seam is facing away, so upside down U with the horseshoe away from you. Dont grip around the horse shoe, grip the right side of the upward seams. Think 2 seam fast ball grip offset to the middle finger instead. As brought my arm slot up a bit, throwing a slider fulling covered the horse turns into a curve. Coming down on the seams a bit lets the ball slip around my fingers better.

I throw a slider and it is very nasty but I like to grip it like a four steamer but your fingers together and another very weird thing that I do is i turn my wrist in wards. Some people might think it is weird but it works for me and I am comfortable with it.

Dude can tuck his thumb because he’s 6’ 3”. I’m not sure that would work the same for me at 5’ 10”. Also, Scherzer is just a freakishly phenomenal hurler of the baseball. I’m a Rangers fan, but I’ll always watch a truly skilled pitcher throw a game. Give me a great matchup where two ace pitchers are shutting down elite lineups and everyone else is bored... I’m having a blast watching them rack up K’s, paint corners and force people to ground into doubles.

I always taught in little league to focus on your fastball and changeup so as to not put extra stress on your arm. Save the junk for high school. I added a slider in high school that had some solid 10 to 4 break but my great was closer to a 2seam fastball grip. All this said, I stopped playing freshman year because I didn't see myself being good enough to ever have a chance to be drafted. That, and I played with a guy that was drafted i believe in the 16th round out of high school and he was exceptionally talented compared to me.
@dblankenship88
@dblankenship88 5 жыл бұрын
John CENA like Chris Kelly said, if you are in little league you should be throwing 3 pitches. 4 seam, 2 seam and Change up. Get proficient in those, learn the proper way to throw them and work on accuracy. Make sure you have proper pitching mechanics prior to throwing any pitch. If your mechanics are garbage any pitch you learn to throw will also be garbage. In little league when you reach the majors division start working your curve and when you play juniors or legion start you slider if needed.

Mine you'd turn the ball shown there 180 degrees and hook middle finger on seam at skinniest point of seams, index finger tight next to it and thumb curled in hooking horseshoe seam under ball, ring and pinkie finger tips curled to touch bottom of palm. From low 3/4 it had more late break than drop. Haven't yet taught it to my boys, I think 13 is still too young for him (will be late bloomer) to throw anything but fb and ch. and variations of each.

I don’t understand how it’s possible to bring your fingers over the front side of the ball, Just before releasing it, without taking lots of speed off of the ball.

SALVATION is the most important thing in this life, it’s you accepting JESUS’s free gift to enter heaven when you die, you don’t have to be perfect you don’t even have to be good. You just gotta believe JESUS died for you and as it says in John 3:16 “For GOD so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that who ever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” And if you believe that and want to say a prayer like this you can “Our father in heaven I believe I’m a sinner and I repent of my sins, GOD I believe that you sent your one and only son to die for us and GOD I Believe that you rose your son from the dead three days later, and JESUS come into my heart and save me.” And if you believe that you can be saved rn
