This Max streaming service review shares our initial insights of the new app that came out of the HBO Max and Discovery+ merger.
There’s a lot to like about the new Max streaming app. It combines the best content from HBO Max and loads of lifestyle content from Discovery+. But, there are some things that former HBO Max subscribers may not like.

At least Peacock does ads right. For movies, you watch a couple of minutes of ads before the movie starts, than the film plays without interruption. That I have no problem with. As far as MAX, since I've been subscribed to HBO via cable for years, I get the ad free tier at no cost. I don't have a 4K TV so, unless I get a new TV, I have no interest in paying for the highest tier.

Overall, we'd agree with your thoughts on the ads on Peacock. We generally have no problem with them. Yep, no need to upgrade to that highest tier if you don't have a 4K TV, unless you really want those additional streams or downloads.

I like the new Max app pretty much. I have one minor complaint. When it was HBO max on your profile you used to be able to download pictures from your photo app on your phone. For instance, I had a picture of myself as my profile picture. I kind of miss that. Hopefully they will bring that back once they get all the bugs worked out from the transition.

Yea, that would be nice to see them add that back as a feature. You're right, there are some bugs they need to straighten out. Hopefully it's sooner rather than later on many of those.

Another solid review from a fellow Nebraskan. Good review! The only issue I’ve had is shows that I’m watching do not stay in the Continue Watching section. Very frustrating.

You know, we've noticed that over the last couple of days in using it, but not on everything. It's super frustrating, especially if you don't remember what espisode you left off on.

I agree. It doesn’t do it every time either. It’s just sometimes. I’m trying to not get too frustrated with it since it’s a new app and they’re trying to work out the bugs. I’ve contacted Max support about it and they told me they’re aware of the problem and are working on a solution.

I just had an update on my Roku Ultra. It seems to have fixed the continue watching problem. I tested it out by fast forwarding and stopping to exit the title. Seems to work! Thank goodness!

I think the issue I had with app features was due to Prime Video trying to merge their features with MAX. For instance, the search feature would override MAX, and take you to Prime Video if there was a repetition of content, which made it confusing. Just typical Amazon tactics. The other thing I am disappointed with, is them not carrying over a lot of the Discovery Plus shows that I like to watch. Since they didn't change the price (YET), I would have to say that if you felt it was worth the $15.99 before, it will still be worth it too you.

Hm, yea, that would definitely be confusing and frustrating. We would've liked to see more of that as well. It seemed sort of hodgepodge to us. If you watch a lot of content from Discovery+ that could certainly be a detractor. We also read over the weekend that the content library as a whole is quite a bit smaller than what was on HBO Max. Interesting to see that, at the very least, but we'll be curious to see how that impacts people staying with them.

For me, too early to say my verdict - I am a Ads Free subscriber - 15.99/month. I have been using HBOMax streaming and more of a movie buff than Discovery type shows. I see they have TCM movies but don't remember if the old HBOMax already had that venue. My decision on keeping MAX will be based on what new movie content they will provide like they did during the pandemic. Many of the MAX movies are nice, but also I have already seen allot of them. I don't want to pay $16.00 a month for content I have already seen many times. Last - I run MAX on my PC laptop and works very well. Take care.

That's definitely a fair point. For what it's worth, we read, over the weekend, that their content library is a fair bit lighter than what was anticipated and what it was before the change over. You might want to keep that in mind as you analyze your viewing habits. 🙂

Yes, let’s talk about “better user experience”? Ever since the app changed over from HBO Max to Max the Match Range feature for Apple TV is no longer supported. So now even movies that say they are Dolby Vision are not showing up that way when streaming through the Apple TV. You would have to change your output settings manually every time your content changed between SDR and HDR. This was never the case with the HBO Max app on Apple TV. After lots of Reddit posts, and tech support emails they have still not fixed the issue. They have acknowledged the issue but no timing on when a fix can be expected. Their advice is changing the settings manually. For the price of the 4K HDR package the app should work at least as well as before on what is one of the most popular streaming devices.

Sorry to hear about your experience and definitely get how it'd be frustrating. We've been reading how the app hasn't been playing well with the new app. One would think that with the ramped up roll out that the issues would've been minor. And, you're right, it should work in similar fashion as the old one. Hopefully they get it straightened out soon!

Great review as always. Before Max, we subscribed to both HBO Max and Discovery+. Now, thanks to the merger, we’ve been able to cancel Discovery+ to save a little money. Not sure that’s what WBD had in mind!

Haha, probably not. But, at least they brought over enough D+ content to make you happy and save some cash. That's what is most important. 🙂

I love the idea but disappointed that networks like Lifetime , History Channels and A&E networks did not make the jump

We definitely get it. Those channels aren't owned by WBD, they're licensed to Discovery+. Another arrangement would need to be made to get them on Max.

I am an AT&T cell phone subscriber, we have been getting HBO Max, now Max for free with the Unlimited cell plan. Wonder if this will change soon ?

From what we've read they won't be offering it to new customers. Additionally, it seems as if you switch plans with AT&T you'll lose your Max plan.

@@fitfighter24 It looks like it's similar, from what we can tell but there isn't as clear cut guidance on it.

@fitfighter Cricket Wireless still has MAX. Even though ATT owns cricket, they still do their own thing.

Hi John I just got Netflix with ads now even though they are along the similar lines as max with the 4 minutes of ads it's still a more brutal experience for some reason the max ads seem to move along much smoother and mostly ads for max related material while Netflix is the hard core bat in hand beating us into submission but look at it this way they are giving us their 15.49 plan for 6.99 so we have to sacrifice something to get that high Netflix content

Yep, you definitely have to sacrifice something to get that lower price. In our opinion, the many of the shows on these services weren't filmed with commercials in mind, so it can make it rather clunky. Hopefully they both get into a better groove in implementing ads.

@Frugal Rules with John and Nicole Schmoll Why don't these services offer a tier in-between the ad free and ad tiers like ad super lite where maybe you save literally a dollar or two off the ad free tier but they implement no more then 2 minutes per hour it's like a win win for all parties as the customer will save a little the streaming service still gets tons of money for still forcing in ads and can now make even more money because they can charge an arm and leg to the advertisers because this is now premium landscape as there can only be so many advertisers on the service and it's a win for the advertiser because they very well can be the only commercial in that viewers head further sending home the message buy our product

@@fitfighter24 It's certainly possible, but the question is who would implement that. Rumors are growing that Amazon is going to launch an ad-supported option. They'd have the standard, ad-supported, then free in FreeVee. But, there's also the question of if an advertiser would want to pay for that. From our experience in marketing, it's a bit more science than art.

He have u heard reports of max accounts billed thru google not being able to transfer the account after rebranding to max?.I received email saying my 1 year subscription will end june 21st instead of october 25th when it is paid up til.I was told it was due to a transfer error .I was told by max my billing provider which is google would provide me a full refund because of it.I spoke to google and they dont seem to know any of this .

I have KZfaq tv and I don't see a 7 day free trial for MAX. Are you possibly referring to the 7 day free trial of KZfaq tv for new customers?

I like the new menu much better than the old one, the old one was slow on my tv with Roku. A good menu makes a big difference but I still don't see how an HBO/Discovery merge will ever be a good thing. Also, $10 a month is way too high for ads.
