Max Yasgur addresses the largest gathering in history, Woodstock.

Max donated his farm which was a disaster zone after the concert. He had every reason to be upset yet his faith in humanity and kind soul shined through. He donated all the milk from his dairy farm to help feed everyone as did all the residences of Bethel, N.Y. The emptied their pantries and welcomed all the attendees with waves and smiles. In a troubled time when peacemakers with a voice were silenced forever while thousands of young people, just like those attending Woodstock were sent to Vietnam, a hero emerged. Not a politician or soldier. A farmer named Max.
@retroguy94944 жыл бұрын
"DONATED" my foot! He got $75,000 for 3 days use of his farm. That's over half a million in today's dollars. And he didn't give free milk. He had his employees take all the empty milk bottles and fill them with water and pass them out because his neighbors were charging huge sums of money for water.
@shenkichin62954 жыл бұрын
according to Sam Yasgur (his son) he did give away all the milk products they had.

Such a kind, gentle man. I don't think he realized the devastation that would happen to his farm. I don't know if he thought it was worth it in the end, but now he is part of music history, and is a legend.
@bachrocktheamericahatersan57998 жыл бұрын
Well said. Max is part of world history. Priceless. I'm saddened Max did not live long enough to see how Woodstock's impact evolved throughout the time since. He'd have been more proud than he was during the real time. Max would have become a living legend.

james c Pretty sure Max wasn't into any of the music genres listened to mostly by the younger people. The goal was unity through live music, and to make some money in the process.
@snowrocket5 жыл бұрын
@james c Well, maybe, "but it had a good beat and you could dance to it". At least he didn't live long enough to see grunge. I think grunge/"alternative" was at times worse than disco.
@snowrocket5 жыл бұрын
I heard in a retrospective that Max viewed having this concert as a freedom of speech issue and was adamant about having it after he and the promoters came to terms.
@snowrocket5 жыл бұрын
@james c James C, that sounds about right to me. Bethel/Yasgur was the second venue, and I think they had to scramble to get it to happen. Max calculated what he would have needed in profitability from his farm during that summer and that's partly how he came up with the figure. He was a savy business man, wanted to promote freedom of speech, and became one of the most famous farmers in pop culture history.

GIANA VOGT - - I am glad that I played onstage at the 25th WOODSTOCK ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL - Saturday afternoon - August 13 1994 - And some other Woodstock RE - UNION Festivals over the years too - AND ALSO that I actually played music in MAX YASGUR'S actual house - when the new owner Ralph had owned it - he was a drummer - MAX YASGUR is up in Heaven now - Ralph is also gone now - But I can say that I played not only on the original stage of the Woodstock August of 1969 Festival BUT also in wonderful Mister MAX YASGUR'S actual house on his farm grounds, JOE NANIA

Such an awesome speech the old man gave there. Cool to see someone as old as him be accepting of the hippies, which many men his age weren't. It's so sad that most people from his generation are now passed on, only a few left. I took care of many people from his generation between 2000 and 2005 when I worked in the rest homes. Even people older than him. I miss the WW 2 generation of people and hate to see them go.

I was researching Woodstock today because the poster was used in Touched by an Angle S5E22 at the end. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMqlp9yeyNndZmQ.html I had no idea of the concert festival NOT taking place in Woodstock due to the town refusing to let it take place. Max Yasgur, a lowly farmer outside of town, was glad to accommodate. There was no such thing as the psychology of crowd control, security, gates, etc. I thought my music viewers would appreciate seeing this little-known clip of the farmer, Max, giving a speech at this historic event. Take care!
