Maxed Out: Keeping Up With the Joneses

This summer saw the biggest decrease in consumer spending in 30 years - a sign that chasing the elusive Joneses may have finally exhausted Americans financially.
For the past 60 years, since the U.S. Department of Commerce started tracking these statistics, consumer spending from quarter to quarter is almost always increased. Not only has it decreased this past quarter, but by 3.7 per cent the largest decrease since 1980.
Two thirds of the gross domestic product is consumer spending. One hundred years ago most of our income went toward necessities, today, nearly half is for non-necessities. Our wants have kept our economy going. But the mortgage meltdown that lead to the credit crisis and now the credit freeze is putting our lifestyle, our consumer way of life and ultimately our economy, at risk.

EXACT "FUCKING" LY. The problem today in America is that people aren't proactive in ANYTHING. Especially finances. I personally have a very good job. ( over 70K ) per year and I WATCH EVERY FUCKING PENNY I spend and always ask. DO I NEED THIS SHIT? I put a couple of hundreds in savings ( investmensts ), a month and always think. WHAT HAPPENS IF I LOSE MY JOB OR SHIT HAPPENS. And that is the problem. While they have their job, they don't think "WHAT IF". And that's the key. Always be proactive and think ahead. But try to explain this to the average moron out there.

I would get one for the money youget back, but I'm debating if i want to get one because then ill get a credit score and i dont want one because if im going to get a credit card its to game the bank and thus my credit score wont look nice because I'll pay off everything before they put interest on it. I'll probably pay it off within hours of using it. And apparently that makes your score lower and I will be renting and theyll see the score isn't good and they wont automatically under write how good I would be as a tenant.

The best to do he tells me is if you have one credit card for emergencies use only what you can pay at the end of the month. Cancel the whole amount you used. Best of all don’t use credit cards if you can’t pay the balance at the end of the month. They are teaching kids nowadays how to keep their finances straight what we didn’t have when I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. ~Dalia

I said it was no longer an issue, been to long, but the thing I still feel is the fact that a lot of people have the feeling the grass is greener on the other side, I told him I know where I came from, so now the grass is greener on my side. And even now, 12 years later that feeling is still there. Still serves me well too.

Last year I saved and invested about 50%-60% of my annual income, I gave about 10% to help others. about 22% went to my expenses. and the rest went to fun/activities/a few small purchases. This year I am on track to do about the same, maybe even save more, as I have given less this year so far. No debt either, my house is even paid for. I never understood people who want to finance everything, I don't care what my car looks like as long as it's paid for and reliable. I don't even have a credit card.

I would say this the financially smart thing to do. I used to keep way too much in my checking account making hardly any interest. Waste of money!

I remember the economic recession of the late 2000s very well. The Reyes family in this special from San Diego were like so many people. Back in the 2000s, there were plenty of people buying what they couldn't afford on credit. Some people were buying houses together knowing they probably worked somewhere like McDonald's or Walmart. Poor people buying houses or people who had good jobs and were laid off also helped caused the housing crisis. Many mortgage companies were also involved in mortgage fraud as well and gave loans to people who couldn't afford them.

This was 10 years ago. I remember so clearly picking up a newspaper in Edinburgh airport the morning the news broke about the Lehman Brothers crash and thinking 'We are about to live through interesting times'. The year before that Tony Blair's Labour Government in the UK were busy selling our gold reserves at bargain price and spending like drunken sailors to 'boost' the economy - basically inflating a bubble to the background tune of 'Things can only better'. How wrong they were. While some of us saw disaster looming many people had taken out a bunch of credit during those times based on their well paying jobs, then lost those jobs thanks to outsourcing and the ripple effects of banking insanity. Jobs that became available paid less and they were squeezed. I hadn't always spent wisely and had no savings, however I got a good redundancy payment when it was my turn to lose my job, I wasn't in debt other than my mortgage and have very employable skills. I had also set my life up with the plan that I could live ok on 2/3 of my earnings if I cut out the 'wants'. To me, nothing was hard about this and it was an obvious strategy, so when disaster hit I was well placed to ride it out. These days I don't even want half the things I already have and don't give a toss about what anyone else has. Life is much easier like this. No-one really cares what you have except you. Your image only matters to you, so wise up and think about why you care about all this crap. It's a tragedy that 10 years on it seems we've learned nothing, it's as if society has sleepwalked into believing debt is a fact of life. *Your* debt only makes $m dollar bonuses for the corporate psychopaths in the banks and corporations that caused all the problems in the first place. It really doesn't have to be this way.

"I was making the full payment, I was making the ...$150 payment on the credit card". Aw honey, that's the minimum due, that's exclusively going toward the interest and your principle isn't being touched. And honestly, you made your life difficult when you decided to have 6 kids as a lunch lady, no one can afford 6 KIDS and apparently the ones that can know better. It really seems like they don't understand how money and debt work.

I wrote this before I saw that she also took her 6 kids (!) to Disneyland! You pretty much decide when you have that many kids that you're not going to be able to afford stuff like that, or eating out. Imagine a restaurant bill for 8 people every time, my heart flutters. Also why are you buying sand for your child's preschool? If they can't afford it then the kids won't have it, it's not your job to swoop in like some wealthy benefactor and provide for them when you can't even handle your own bills!

I also have a savings account at that same bank with the money to cover the loan, auto pay. I drive a 2000 Nissan Frontier and a 2013 Toyota Corolla, both paid for. I know the difference between need and want. I know that there will be an "unexpected" vet bill or my car may "unexpectedly" break down. However, as parents, they signed up for a responsibility to learn things that will benefit their children so they can do better. If she spent as much time going to seminars on fiscal responsibility and money management as she does buying things she doesn't from Wal-Mart, they would be much better off. I only hope they are not one of those selfish parents who take things out in their children's name when they don't have to. That is illegal and can be horrid for a child's credit before they even have control of it.

@@avalondreaming1433, I can appreciate that, but I also don't see anything wrong with materialism, as long as you can truly afford it and you're not putting yourself into debt to acquire these things. Everyone I feel likes having nice things, i believe it's human nature, however, I don't agree in being in debt to buy things that won't matter in a few years. Yes, however, a home is an investment, an asset that generally appreciates in value each year. We all know that cars depreciate in value as soon as you drive them off the lot. Phones are another good example. Some people just have to have the "latest," whether they can afford it or not or need it or not! Do what you want with your money, however, don't come crying and expecting the government to bail you out because you're now drowning in debt!
