Film is a series of 14 flights detailing the 4th trim session for the rubber-powered free-flight model of the 31" 1914 Martinsyde S.1. The model has a smaller prop & a new pair of wings, swapping out undercambered wings for ones with sliced ribs and flat bottoms. The 31" model was built by Tom Hallman. Filmed at Barron Field in Wawayanda, NY, May 14, 2021. Music via motionarray.com.

One thing that strikes me is your ability to fly and video simultaneously. The whoops of boy-like joy seem to be the result of careful planning and meticulous attention to detail (like your models). The amount of support equipment you bring out to the field must be impressively complete and organized. I don't think there is anything as dramatic as a rubber powered biplane in the air...I love the sound of the power burst. Beautiful plane, beautiful flying. Thank you.

Thx, Ken. Setting up various cams has become more routine, so it doesn't distract as much as it had early on. It's a carnival show sometimes... But most important to me is that I use the good air & conditions as efficiently as possible, since they're a rarity. I never know what I have until I see it later, but I'm always pleased to know that I've recorded the entire process...good or bad.

Hello from northern Thailand, really enjoyed your video. I'm an electric guy, expat Canadian retired here. Flying and building foamies but the real challenge is the heat. That field you flew at made me homesick for eastern Canada where in summer it's easy to find a soft hay field big like yours. Not the case here, every inch grows rice or something. And even after the crop is done fields are hard stubble, so I missed your dandylion, plush grass. Kudos on your patience trying little changes along the testing. I never was exposed to your aspect of the hobby and now see it's details, details that count. Nice music and that slow Mo of you launching was "Budddddaaahhhh" . All the best. Tim - Chiangrai.

I came across this yesterday and felt compelled to revisit today. I built balsa gliders in the 70s and thought I knew a bit about model planes, but I had no idea there were such powerful rubber motor planes. I get a good vibe from watching this, almost quasi-meditative. I also find the video well shot and edited. Thank you for sharing your experiments and your excitement.

Your models are so perfectly built, they remind me of my late Father (RIP). My dad was a perfectionist, he built some astounding model planes and passed the love for this hobby onto myself. I've never been as precise as he used to be but I've had many happy hours building planes :-).

Just Magic! The day was so kind and the field so soft. I think gliders/low powered planes have a deal with the wind and atmosphere more than with their owner :) That sky though towards evening was very dramatic and you captured it perfectly; Bravo!

hello I found your video and I thought it might not be interesting I was wrong… You are a fantastic content creator and this video where to start… It's like so beautiful and I could feel your love of flight throughout. It was like going back to the roots the beginning of flying machines. When you hand launched in slow motion it was so beautiful. My friend I am at a lack of words your video left me quite moved. I could feel the air I could feel the flight it was simply amazing. By the way I'm a chopper pilot and I never thought the elastic power would be something I would be interested in but your presentation left me breathless. This video was absolutely beautiful… good work beautiful airplane beautiful location your narration everything… Thank you for sharing this moment I'll never forget

In the 60s I was thirteen working at bicycle & hobby shop. By then I was a pretty good at making wood flying scale models. I than went all out and built a 38" span, very scale J3 knowing it was easy to trim and get it to fly over 1.5 minutes. So just like you I got it all trimmed up in a large tall grass field and got it to fly nearly 2 min. It was a beautiful warm day, so I drove (and yes I drove and had a car at 13, & so did many of my other friends), and hiked up to an peak hill, wound her up to the max and let her go. At about 30 seconds into the flight a gental thermal just took over and was up so high I lost site of my J3 and never saw it again... 2 weeks later a customer came into the bike shop and asked me if I lost a big yellow airplane, cause they knew I made and flew them... I SAID YES! It turned out it landed without damage in their back yard miles from the hill. I retired it and hung it over the hobby shop section at the bike shop. I can still remember making the J3 gas gauge as scale as possible.
