I love their relationship. Such a sweet and tenderness. You can tell he was possibly her first love and she was his.

He would never forget her and always cherished her memory. Though his 3rd was more beautiful, he always said Mary had been better choice because she was wiser. He was unusually close to his daughter Margaret, who was, just like her mother, a highly intelligent and charming woman. He trusted her judgement so much, he relied on her to rule the Low Countries for his grandson Charles 1 and entrusted his upbringing to her. By all accounts she was also his favourite child. For the age of arranged marriages, theirs was a union of deep love.

I love the part when they talk about their baby. Maximilian knows and and mentions all the signs that show that Mary may be expecting a boy. Rather a touching scene. As for the trial I was expecting no mercy on his part.Justice was cruel .Those were cruel times.Maximilian did what was expected of him.

Yeah but to be honest I don't understand the part of the judgement that concerned Johanna. I mean, this judgement as a whole is either very unjust to Wolf or unjust to Johanna. If Wolf had to be punished for the "rape", then why punish Johanna too, by casting her out of the court? If Wolf was a rapist then she was only an innocent rape victim who deserved no punishment for anything. Or, if Johanna had to be punished for her adulterous behavior, then Wolf's punishment is far far too big for a man who only bedded a married lady (which was usually not punished at all because men weren't blamed for anything). So I think Maximilian was wrong here.

@@Lily1127channel I see your point.Perhaps I am influenced by portuguese history.Such cases (and there were quite a few) among the nobility were punished severely.Men were even more severely punished than women.Most were sentenced to death.Portuguese kings were very severe.Even the clergy feared their sentences.
@Lily1127channel

@@Belinda8881 You mean that men who slept with married noble women were sentenced to death? 😮 I don't know the Burgundian custom in that case, but the previous scene with her standing accused of adultery meant to me that in that case only she would receive severe punishment, no one even talked about Wolf and a possible punishment for him. Until he said it was rape. And the point is, Maximilian already accepted to judge according to the rape version of the story, and that's how he punished Wolf. Then why do anything to Johanna? Surely rape victim women shouldn't be punished, even in that patriarchal society.

@@Lily1127channel maybe Maximilian didn't want to look like he favoured her, given that her husband obviously wanted her to be punished too. Everyone knew that the rape version was false, even if they all pretended it was true, especially the husband. In any case, the lady in waiting destiny with that husband nothing to be longing for, he doesn't look like a husband ready to forgive her.

0:10 Whoever was responsible for the subtitles, "Ich darf Polheim nicht verschonen" clearly means "I MUST not spare Polheim". A duke etc. was always bound to common law, too, as he was its personal bearer and guarantor. This is what Maximilian is reflecting upon in this scene, he must not bend down the rules, not least for sake of his future authority. (He luckily found a solution towards kinda judgement of god.)

Filmmakers know how to achieve effects on the spectators. Yet, it remains their choice what to include. In the court scene, I love to recognize at 2:41 how Polheim trembles, awakening from his concerns (probably rather for his love), at 3:02 he has to swallow and at 3:11 ff how the two lovers look towards each other in silent empathy. PS. wow I wish I could act as "cool", decisive and clever as the young duke at 3:03 ff - getting goose bumbs.

About punishing Johanna. First I think Maximilian was angry for her because she was the reason he had to punish Wolf. Second - and its important, after her lover is sentenced, she is no longer a trusted person, who knows, maybe she'll decide to have a revenge - and not on her husband. Third, I don't really think anybody believed the rape version - so a decision not to pretend that she is 100% innocent was kind of wise. I actually feel sorry for her, of cause, but I believe the punishment was quite adequate. Time was hard, not Maximilian
@Lily1127channel
@Lily1127channel 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I also understand his reasons, but Wolff was punished according to the rape version of the story, whether they believed it or not. So the other person involved, Johanna, had to be dealt with in the same way, with the same version accepted. That's just how justice works, now and always. As far as I know medieval law (which may be wrong ofc), that's how it worked back then as well. That is just how it is natural. You can't judge the several people involved in one case by accepting more than one contradicting versions of the same story at the same time. That's just... not justice. Maximilian's decision was not just harsh. Every law was harsh back then. But it was against natural law. (Of course kings in some countries could do whatever they liked, but Burgundy was not such a place.) Btw I didn't really care for Johanna when I saw the series because I think she was the stupid one here. She failed to mention to Wolf the "minor" fact that she was btw married when he was seducing her. A man has the right to know if he is participating in an extramarital affair 😀 So, of course her fate seems cruel now, she really made her own bed. But what I couldn't understand about the trial the most is why on earth did Wolf and Johanna not deny everything 😄 Like there was really no proof, only the husband claimed that they had an affair, there was no evidence, they could have at least tried to deny it.

I have no idea about Medieval law at all)) I just suppose that it's a ruler who decides whatever he wants - or there should be a law, where some measures are written. Like with the nose cut off. Basicly Maximilian didn't even punish her for adultery. He uses the word 'sentence' and other 'I, your lord' only for Wolf. He just throws her out of the court quite in the next sentence. I'm not sure this counts like an juristic punishment)) She could just have spill a wine on his favorite shirt and get bunished from court - doesn't she?)
@Lily1127channel
@Lily1127channel 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheMagicAround Well complete banishment from the court is pretty serious punishment for a noble, I think. Not a very big one, like it could be bigger (fee, land taken, prison, etc), but still a big embarassment and shame if it happens to a noble lord/lady. I mean, it implies that you did something very wrong. Which she didn't do if she was supposed to be rape victim only 🤷‍♀️

@National Socialism Well no he was not banished from court, only the wife was 😀 (He appeared in several scenes in the court after this.) So if it was a political move from Maximilian, it made no sense. Banishing the spy's wife so that she can't have access to the duchess (and she hates her abusive husband so it's highly unlikely she would help him in spying anyway), but not banishing the spy himself so that he can continue spying 😀

It's because for the most part American audiences are not interested in European History, and no US company would invest the amount it would take to replicate something like this. They'll spend millions into a series, if and only if they think they will get a return on investment, and sadly despite Maximillian being a fantastic series, it's not the kind of thing that sells in the US. No dragons :)
