Great video Peter. I'm not a Canon shooter or much of a wildlife photographer but there is certainly great information in here for anyone that is, Canon or any other brand as I assume the setup would be similar using their menu systems. Absolutely stunning in-flight shots at the end of the video, just amazing! Very well put together and super informative! Hope you are doing well and keeping safe down there!

@@peterviragphoto Had a lovely weekend wandering around the bush and then filming a full video in my studio for the first time! The ride has to wait until lockdown ends and my cooker/sink arrives from the US. Dunno about you, but my 4K videos are taking days to process in full resolution on YT, so I’m trying to upload 3 days before release. I just uploaded Friday’s video an hour ago.
@peterviragphoto
@peterviragphoto 3 жыл бұрын
No worries, the ride will be awesome I’m sure when completed! My 4K videos are usually processed within a few hours but in the past on rare occasions used to have some issues and took longer. Not sure if it has anything to do with codecs, file size, seems to be random. Once my HD res video was being processed for days. Although keep in mind that even now e.g. my studio is saying it’s still processing the HD version of my last upload, 4k is already available….

Super helpful video Peter, this helped with my understanding of bird photography settings, despite using a different system, still very helpful. That canon menu system is cleaner than Sony and the descriptions in the autofocus section (Af speed/sensitivity etc) are so detailed, I had to google what the ones on Fuji meant as the description was short and not intuitive at all 😂 🥴. Really like how you set up your dual back button autofocus as well, I never thought of that! Great image you got recently of the sparrow was it? I missed what type of bird it was 😆
@peterviragphoto
@peterviragphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks heaps Rauri. I know it might have been a bit dull but wanted to show all of the settings I thought might be useful for both beginners & a bit more advanced photographers. Also you’re right in regard to having similar/equivalent settings on the Sony, Nikon etc. Sometimes it can be a bit daunting to delve into all the settings & I had to tweak it here and there until I found something that works for me in most situations. The sparrow was a swift😀😀😀

Hi Peter, thanks for the tutorial. It is amazing! I have the 1DX Mark II and EF 100-400MM II lens. Today I went out to try your C1 setting. There is a question. In an overcast day what is your priority in changing the setting among shutter speed, aperture and ISO? Do you find yourself adjust one setting more than others? Which setting do you tend to not adjusting it too frequently (i.e. changes the others while keeping it unchanged as much as possible) I am a beginner so would appreciate your elaboration on this. Thank you in advance!!🙂

Hi Dallas. Thanks for dropping by & for your kind comment! Exposure settings that I normally use for birds in flight ( these are base values) : 1/2500s ( sometimes you need higher but 1/3200s usually works for almost all subjects ), ISO 800 & f/7.1 which normally will get the entire bird in focus ( depending on its proximity of course ). I normally only change the ISO value but if the light is not sufficient enough I open the aperture up to f/5.6 which is the maximum at 400mm on the EF 100-00 II. On overcast days for birds in flight the ISO will have to go up considerably at high shutter speeds for correct exposure, normally in the range of 1600-6400. I usually don’t like to go beyond that even though the low light performance of the 1DX II is still pretty damn good. For stationery subjects you can obviously use much lower shutter speed and then keep the ISO low(er). Hope this helps! Have fun out there!:)

@@peterviragphoto Very clear Peter! Thank you so much for speedy response. I have another question if you don't mind. I use the extender 2X III on the 100-400 lens. However there will be no auto focus at extended 400-800mm. In that case will the C1-C3 setting in your video still work? It seems you cannot just press the "AF ON" and "*" to focus like without the extender. Is the manual focus only way? In manual focus mode how do the two buttons work ("AF ON" and "*")? Thank you!
@peterviragphoto
@peterviragphoto Жыл бұрын
Hey Dallas. Unfortunately if AF is disabled with the extender then you can only rely on manual focus which can be difficult for birds in flight but not impossible if you know where the focal plane is gonna be and then just spray & pray:))

Hi Peter, I really enjoyed this video. As you shoot mostly wildlife and birds why do you choose EOS ITR AF : Face priority ? Thanks for yhe video !

Hey Steve thanks a lot! I did some testing for tracking ( in videos too ) & the Face priority gave me essentially the same results as the default ITR AF but is a more versatile option if you shoot sports too. Thanks again for watching, appreciate it! Cheers

I tried to find out from various videos on KZfaq discussing the 1DX MKII. Looking to find out the focus performance at night, because my current job is sports photography which is mostly done at night with little light outdoors, does the 1dx mkii have good focus performance in low light?
@peterviragphoto
@peterviragphoto 4 ай бұрын
Hi Imam. I think the 1DX II is still a very reliable camera body & focusing in low light is still one of its strengths. Obviously there are better options out there, with the more advanced mirrorless bodies ( e.g. R3 ) but at a much higher pricepoint. Cheers
