Maximum Canada: Why 35 Million Canadians Aren’t Enough

Award-winning author and Globe and Mail feature columnist Doug Saunders argues we need 100 million Canadians if we're to outgrow our colonial past and build a safer, greener, more prosperous future. And, for the first time, Saunders takes on Canada.
It would shock most Canadians to learn that before 1967, more people have fled this country than immigrated to it. That was no accident. Long after we ceased to be an actual colony, our economic policies and social tendencies kept us poorly connected to the outside world, attracting few of the people and building few of the institutions needed to sustain us. Canada has a history of underpopulation, and its effects are still being felt.
Post-1967, a new Canada emerged. The closed, colonial idea of Canada gave way to an open, pluralist and connected vision. At Canada's 150th anniversary, that open vision has become a fragile consensus across major parties and cultures. Yet support for a closed Canada remains influential.
In a rare and bold vision for Canada's future, Saunders' new book MAXIMUM CANADA: Why 35 Million Canadians Are Not Enough proposes a most audacious way forward: To avoid global obscurity and create lasting prosperity, to build equality and reconciliation of indigenous and regional divides, and to ensure economic and ecological sustainability, Canada needs to triple its population - and this can be done without a large immigration increase.

Yes, Canada needs 100million people, all of whom absolutely must live in Toronto!

@@righthandstep5 Ontario Receives 40% of all immigrants as of 2017. It is safe to say that 80% of those people settle in the GTA. You are delusional if you think people will "spread out". Spread out across what? Rocky, frozen wasteland in the north? Tiny towns with no internet? Medium sized towns 5 hours away from Toronto, with no jobs? I know the Young Turks probably got you thinking a certain way, but at least try to engage with reality.

@@slavicsquat5759 nope you're just naive. Btw a report came out about such a topic. By 2068 there literally could be 71 million canadians living here, most immigrant in alberta Manitoba Saskatchewan and ontario and some in bc quebec and maritimes.

7 years later and house prices, rents soaring , crime soaring, the medical system collapsing. Emissions up, habitat loss, congestion, pollution and standard of living dropping. Well done sxperts.

I always thought a country's standard of living was dependent on R&D, technological innovation and pro-business economic policies/taxation...?!...(not necessarily population)

So, importing 100 million people from the Third World will "erase" Canada's colonial past and encourage environmental awareness? Here I thought overpopulation was a major threat and there needed to be limits to growth. However, it seems completely changing the demographics with 100 million people, mostly from Africa and Asia, doesn't count as colonialism or ethnic replacement.

Immigration of skilled people is important for Canada to compete globally. Immigrating non skilled people doesn't have any benefits in short term.
