I got an uncle doing 40 in max. He’s been beaten half to death a few times, once assaulted a guard so that they could throw him in solitary confinement to save his life. He did tell me that if you are religious (convert to Islam, Christianity and so on) the rule is nobody or no gang can touch you, but you will be alone. I did 6 years at a maximum security prison and stood on my 10 toes. I could interact with anyone, I got my GED, learned electrical. I had mutual respect with dang near every gang because I minded my own business and when I had to fight I did. Not the best fighter, not even close but I still always tried. I only had to throw hands maybe 7 times, around once a year. This was my experience but this can vary depending on the prison and how many numbers the gangs have.
