Open the Victorinox scissors wide open. There is a lot of play. When you close it slowly to about 60 degree suddenly the play is gone. This is because the inside surface near the pivot is not flat. The thickness close to the pivot is thinner. That's why from the beginning of the cut the blades ale forced together and additionally the curvature of the blades help to do so to the very tip. And the blade edge is perfect sharp. Scissors are not easy to manufacture. You must have extensive experience in design a good pair of scissors. That's why Victorinox are so good.

The Victorinox scissors just have the best of everything, period. I dont know why people shun them because of the spring they use. Sure, it can break, but it is replaceable. Can you do that with your Squirt, which are notorious for breaking springs? I have never been interested in getting a Micra after checking one out in a store and being utterly unimpressed with how it felt. It's $80 in Australia now 😂

The spring on my Squirt broke but even before that the scissors were pretty much useless as they had that poor peening causing a lot of blade play, meaning they were no good for thin stuff like thread or thin plastic sheeting,which would just wedge between the blades, or thicker stuff like paracord. The spring on my Classic broke after a lot of use, I just ordered a new one for £2 and replaced it easily.

My philosophy for scissor longevity, is to use scissors for sized-(way)down tasks. Small scissors are to be babied (hygiene tasks and the like); I would no sooner use Micra scissors to cut 550 paracord than I would use the blade of a Victorinox Classic to cut carpet. The lightest scissors I'd consider pressing into an emergency role of cutting paracord would be Klein electrician scissors. For clamshell packaging, I'd go with aviation tin snips. Using scissors considered overkill will ensure they'll actually last in the long run.
@zripster
@zripster 10 ай бұрын
Paracord is not an overly ambitious thing to cut. Klein scissors are for cutting wire/metal. Any pair of scissors should be able to cut paracord
@sda4jesus1
@sda4jesus1 10 ай бұрын
@@zripster Regular cutting of 550 cord by small scissors is guaranteed to eventually result in pivot slop. If you want to do this, understand that the performance of such scissors will necessarily degrade as a result. If you want scissors to last, use them for tasks below their rated strength: THAT'S the first secret to scissor longevity. Of course there is always simply cutting the desired length of paracord with a knife, which is the regular way of doing it. Knowing when to use a scissor, and when to use another type of cutting tool, is the 2nd secret of scissor longevity.
@zripster

@sda4jesus1 if victorinox can make scissors that easily cut paracord so can other brands. It's a matter of the quality of the product. Im not gonna lower my expectations just because most manufacturers don't meet them, neither should you. Instead, we should both be advocating for better scissors and condemning bad scissors
@sda4jesus1
@sda4jesus1 10 ай бұрын
@@zripster Have to agree with you on all the points you raised. I stand with you steadfastly on the side of improved quality as opposed to shoddy construction. I acknowledge that the Victorinox scissors cut better than Leatherman. Hopefully Leatherman raises its game, they sure charge enough. I have a Victorinox Signature, should I start running that in place of my Micra, or get a Rambler or Manager instead?
@zripster
@zripster 10 ай бұрын
@sda4jesus1 manager gives you the most tool options, but you could also go a little bigger and get something like the climber. Personally, I carry a nail clipper 580, and although the scissors can't cut paracord, i never use them. I carry it for the file, nail clippers, and tweezers. If you find the Micra fits your needs well though, then stick with it. No point in changing if you already bought them, but if you ever need a second one maybe try a victorinox climber or something instead, especially since it's nearly half the price

I usually watch videos at 2.5 or 3x speed. Although you need to install a plugin to do so. When the watch time takes into consideration how much percentage of a video I've watched, it shouldn't be a problem. If it doesn't and me watching a video at 3x speed is tracked as only watching a third of the video, that would be pretty bad. I'd like to test that somehow, but I have no idea how to do so.

I don't have an explanation for differences in quality, but I do have an issue with tests like these because I don't know what the expectation is for scissors in this size. What were they designed to cut. If one was lost in a jungle with a lot of paracord and a Micra, one would be ill advised to use the scissors, when the same tool has a knife. The perfect range of activity for these blunt tipped scissor would be trimming the end of a packet of blow. I like them, and consider them useful, but I don't really know what Leatherman thought they were good for, or how they can be fully sharpened. I used to buy tailor scissors off Ebay. New ones cost about 400 dollars, but one can pick up massive, incredibly well made antique tools for 20 bucks. They then need some work. The pair I keep around the house are 12 inches long, and weigh one pound. The steel quality is incredible, and they are fully restorable. These scissors would be capable of cutting fabric about the weight of jeans fabric, for ever. However, there are much larger scissors that will cut carpeting say. Carpeting would be in the range of what paracord is. They might be twice the weight. In comparison, a pair of the popular Fiscar type stamped scissors, that still give good service, are about 10 inches and 4 ounces. The Micra is about 2 ounces. If one wants a really small, stout scissor/shears, the Wiss Snips are a good bet as they do not have a pivot, are very stiff, and the finger ensure they do not come appart. They are also fully sharpenable past the crotch overlap.

The way someone handles scissors is quite important on the cutting result. If you push slightly the two blades against eachother, cutting ability improves, if you push them apart, scissors can become useless. Also the point at which you hold the rope or thread, etc. I can see some merit in these tests, but not very "scientific". But obviously there is very valid point in the video, if the pivot pin becomes loose with time and useage, scissors are... bad.

if you pull the bottle opener and the flat head on the one side of the micra and you pull out the finger nail cleaner and 2d phillips on the other side it gives you a much better purchase on the micra and its puts the correct pressure against the blades and it makes the micra cut way way better

Maxlvledc, wouldn't a true one tool option require a company to custom-build each multitool to the unique specifications and tool set of each customer? Wouldn't the costs of doing this would be too prohibitive to support the venture? Everyone's grail set up and series of specifications are too unique. This is seen in the most heard critique of Victorinox: "If they only had this tool instead of that one on the (name your model)."

Maxlvledc, I do think you were on to something with a video (I can't find it now) a while back in which you explain why Victorinox will never offer their Compact with a Philips. Your point was that if they offer us tool sets we like, the popularity of their other offerings will suffer as a result. RE the Compact--To me the perfect Compact would swap the corkscrew with a Philips; shorten in length to that of the small Tinker (yes, compacting the Compact, for an even more friendly EDC); and above all else, allow the main blade to lock. Of course that's a perfect description of a Wenger/Victorinox collaboration, the Evolution line, which--sadly--was discontinued a while back.

I like the EDC exercise, but most of the tool selections are ridiculously limited. I am going to thrive, because I have a set of 1/4" inch screwdrivers in an altoids box when my F-150 craps out? I have 3 bags of tools in the back, and even then I can only fix a few obvious things. The best example I have experienced of it all coming together is for bike touring. People will ask about what cyclist multi tool they should get. Most of the stuff on those is irrelevant. The key is to build out the bike so that everything adjusts easily with allen wrenches. This, at least a while back, was actually quite expensive. But if one did it, it was feasible to fix everything with a handful of tools, and tire tools. It was less about general purpose stuff, than assuring everything was designed to a standard. Sorta like converting one's plumbing to PEX..
