I agree with your conclusion. Apart from a few worn lug nuts, I haven't had any problems with my Maxtrax. I've had mine when they first came out some 7-8 years ago. TIP: When using Maxtrax in mud or bog hole.... tie a thin long strap [bright coloured is preferred] to the side of the Maxtrax and chuck the other end to the side. Then once you have gone through and the Maxtrax has sunk or disappeared, you can simply follow along the strap and pull them out. Just make sure you keep the strap clear of the wheel path.

He said the Treds have one DEAD END, NOT TRUE!!! the dead end has a couple of valuable purpose to it.. you can connect 2 treds together for a longer tred or the dead end tred can connect together in an incline angle, like a 30 degree angle to get out of a steep hole better. Also the so called dead end can be used as a Shovel to move Snow, Mud, Sand, Rocks with ease. Plus the TREDS have a Life Time Warranty, if they crack under the weight of the vehicle, it's covered under their Warranty.

For those concerned about the lugs being melted off the MAXTRAX, here is an easy solution. simply bring a container with in the vehicle that has the correct size bolts, washers, and nuts (preferable nylock), and this way you can put new studs on it out in the field. 2 tips for that though, is 1, make sure there are no burrs on the end of your bolts, and 2, don't spin your tires on the board if you can, as you can damage your tires. Now that's just a basic setup. If youre like me, you can elaborate that base design further to be more efficient or more forgiving to your tires. Maybe cap the bolt with an acorn nut. Or put the bolt in with the hex head being the tire's contact surface. Get creative with it, walk through a hardware store and see what you can find. But it will hold up a lot better than the plastic lugs that come stock on the boards. Just my 2 cents.
@chrisbsomething73389 жыл бұрын
Treds also come in a shorter length which I like. In some situations you won't fit the long length under your wheel. But the main reason I like the short ones is the long ones are ungainly to store. I think in 95% of situations the short ones are plenty long enough. Most likely they won't crack as easy either, but I haven't tested that.

Got a set of max trax. Brilliant tool that has never let me down. If you treat them with care the lugs last just fine. Shocks a lot of people as to how well they work. I do a lot of sole beach work so they're invaluable to me. Never used treds but max trax are worth every dollar.
@rondetten92527 жыл бұрын
Ok, I understand the convenience, and some people are obsessed with looks, but I have used a old scrap piece of a board, and sometimes even just a branch I found laying around to get vehicles unstuck more often than anything else, so this is where I don't get paying $200+ dollars for something that a piece of wood for the most part would suffice.
@JeremyPetho7 жыл бұрын
Wood can be used for putting over holes and it helps keep the wheels on the ground if you have open diffs but it is slippery and won't help when you really need traction. If you want something cheap that works as well as Maxtrax, get some FRP grate with grit surface and cut to the shape you want. They can support a lot of weight so great for making ramps and bridges too. The downside is that they are a bit heavy and awkward compared to these expensive plastic boards.

I own a set of TREDs in Florida and love them, they work really well in our soft ground. I recommend that you tie off a piece of webbing on the TRED and either lay it off to the side or attach to your bumper to aid in recovery. TREDs should only be used on soft stuff as they are not meant to flex given their design. That being said though I have put dirt under them to ramp over an obstacle.
@tomthorn28876 жыл бұрын
I bought a set (2) treds and a set (2) maxtrax. The strength and flexibility and thus use of the maxtrax has been much better. Ramped over a log for the first time and we thought both would break. The maxtrax worked great the treds just fractured right away. We are into overlanding and fairly hardcore off-roading so for us we trust the maxtrax FAR more than we would ever trust treds. We had 3 sets of of two for the treds and they all fractured and failed before we were three-quarters of the way.

@@MaxT80 they do. But I'm reading the fine print and it has a ton of limitations. They wont cover the nubs because they'll blame spinning tires. Seems like it only covers cracks but fine print says damage from rocks or hard surfaces wont be covered (even though instructions have no limitations on using them on such terrain unless -20 degrees) so what's stopping them from blaming a crack on the terrain? So really comes down to how well they are with customer service. Fine print says you have to pay for return shipping and everything.

A lifetime warranty is of no use when you're stuck in the boondocks if the board(s) break while doing a self-recovery. I would not be comfortable with these as a primary or only recovery option. HOWEVER, if you don't have a tree to hook a winch to, this might be your only hope of self-rescue.

The newer TREDs do not have the "snapping" issue you talk about here, at least I am yet to see it. On a side note I have had a MAXTRAX seller refuse to replace a broken board, in saying that I am yet to break a TRED and test that.
@dvast8710 жыл бұрын
I deliberately bogged down to the chassis in my Pajero (All Terrains with 50psi sitting parallel with the water) on the fluffy soft beach sand to test out my new green TRED (cost AU$199 with storage bag). No digging or anything just rammed one under each back wheel, reversed straight out as if I wasn't even bogged. I could not believe it actually worked as advertised! I'm sure Maxtraxx would achieve the same result but whichever one you buy for sand driving, these are the most valuable recovery device you can have! My friend has the Maxtraxx and yes someone span their wheels on them and wore out some of the nobs really easy. (Oh they shot almost fully buried into the sand so I suggest tying a rope to them so you can retrieve them if they fully disappear.)

I was a retailer of Maxtrax, I have personally broken a pair of Maxtrax. MK Triton single cab ute, in soft mud getting some traction to clear the climb out of a rut. Also ripped a few of the lugs off of them very early on and not with excessive wheel spin just testing them on the beach (I liked to know my product before selling them) Did i do something wrong? I don't think so but hey its possible. The major issue is when I called as a retailer direct to Maxtrax and got told to buy another set. No backup from the manufacturer or even any form of compensation = unhappy. I now happily sell and recommend TREDS, No issue with warranty should something break. No unhappy customers, cant go wrong.

G'day Chris, Brad McCarthy, Managing Director of MAXTRAX here. As a proudly Australian-owned family company, we stand behind the quality of our Australian-made products and will gladly honour any genuine warranty claim, however we have no record of any contact from you (as a consumer or a retailer) regarding your 'broken' MAXTRAX. Who did you contact? What is the name of your store? Since we launched MAXTRAX in 2005 we have sold tens of thousands of sets all over the world, including to the Australian and US defence forces, and have had just nine broken boards returned under warranty, most of which had been used (contrary to the 'User Instructions') in temperatures below -20ºC, or on hard or rocky ground. Of the very few warranty claims that we receive, most are for burnt teeth caused by excessive wheel spin. We typically these honour claims out of goodwill, even though this damage is not a fault with the product. Any moulded plastic product (including our competitors) will melt when sufficient heat is generated, so we clearly state in the 'User Instructions', and emboss into every MAXTRAX, "NO WHEEL SPIN", for this reason. Gentle acceleration is the key to successful use. If you would like to contact me at brad@maxtrax.com.au or phone me on 0417740114, I will take care of you. Kind regards, Brad McCarthy.

As I have a suzuki Jimny that is less than 1000kg so the 800mm treds do me fine. Where the treds may not be as durable as maxtrax you can sit the treds ontop of each other to create a ramp for clearing deep ruts or that annoying unmovable boulder at the top of a hill climb. Heavier 4x4's for the rough rocky offroad may prefer maxtrax for the durability but for sand the treds are fine and you save well over 100 dollars on each pair. only other advice i would give is if you are doing mud work then the 1100mm treds are better than the 800mm.

+Ronny Dahl (4 Wheeling in W.A.) I have used scrap pieces of carpet a lot in mud, sand, snow and for ice traction even. You can get carpet scraps easily from the carpet stores scrap bins where they dump the old carpet from new installs. They also use the larger scraps in horse stalls during the rainy seasons, as the horses can sink in pretty good with out it. Having said all of this for getting unstuck it is really a one time use for emergencies. They are dirty, bulky, not worth washing and weigh a ton once they are wet. I keep a couple of scraps in the car and use them as a floor mats in bad weather.

I have to disagree from personal experience. I used low pile carpeting pieces and even drilled bolts into the carpet. When I got stuck in relatively shallow sand on an even surface, I used these homemade carpeting pieces and my tires spun resulting in the carpeting just getting burnt. It was not effective.

Hey dude, i like your videos mate good work. Just thought id give one point of constructive criticism and urge you to invest in a wireless microphone and add some voice over work to reduce the ambient noise. peace.

Hola! First of all, thanks a lot for the videos. Very interseting and i do learn a lot. I live in the UAE. Desert,sand,hot... :) Been thinking about getting some of those, but also been considering other options. 1) Aluminium sand tracks. Pros and cons? Have you tried them? 2) I custom build some out of a frame of steel, steel sheet and metallic mesh. Also custom build an attachment to the roofrack. They did work, but where heavy. I sold my previous car and got rid of them. 3) Rolled up recovery tracks. Havent heard good reviews from friends over here. Any experience? Thanks a lot!

+Jon Llona Minguez thanks buddy. To answer your questions here goes: #1 have not tried them but would love to test them as they look solid and well designed from what I have seen. #2 I'd becareful with that extra weight if on top of the roofrack. #3 those rolled tracks we do have and have yet to test them, Brandon from Modified E10 told us they work well in the mud but not so well in the sand. We will be testing them some time soon to see what they are like in sand, dirt and mud.

There's another brand called GO-TREADS here in Canada and the U.S. They are folding with 3 parts. Have no idea if they are better or worse but the fact that they fold up is pretty nice. Makes them more compact. Great video by the way Mate!

AMAZON has Maxtrax for $108. Just got mine!

Has anybody seen anyone use Marston Mats as maxtrax? They might be heavier but their probably more durable but might not give you the grip maxtrax provide?

When these are being stored on roof racks 365 days of the year, even though they are UV stabilised, do you think they will eventually become more brittle?
@Rumpole10008 жыл бұрын
Thats a good point. I'd suggest being plastic and in the sun all the time that deterioration would be inevitable but it would take a few years.

I've got two maxtrax just because I reckon you get what you pay for. Has the jeep got new tyres? Federals? Did he go bigger?
@Ronny_Dahl10 жыл бұрын
Federals 33's so one inch bigger than standard.
