Maxwell Type 1 Cassettes - WTF!? - Knock Off / Type 0 Vs Genuine Maxell LN

There are many different knock offs of classic cassettes sold back in the day. Sometimes it was a simple case of copying the packaging, changing a letter in the name (Sony To Somy) and shoving any cheap Type 0 cassette in there. I thought this "Maxwell" might be the same, but there's more to it...

Imagine trying to tell someone back in the day that always said "Maxwell" that it's actually "Maxell", get into a bit of an argument only to have their incorrect perception of reality reassured by their "Maxwell" tape.

In February 1981 'High Fidelity' had an 'inside report' from HongKong's sweatshops (it's online at americanradiohistory site). Basically, the Chinese said that obtaining genuine branded molds, Japanese pancakes etc. was not an issue at all. They had it all (so they said); the issue was that in 1981 there wasn't enough demand for high quality fakes. I'm too young to remember 1981, but by 1988 fake Sonys were everywhere, and many indistinguishable from the originals... if there were any originals. But they still work like any cheap ferric should.

Just found your channel & subscribed, came up in my recommends after watching a Techmoan video, I still use cassettes occasionally, I have dozens of mixtapes I made from back in the 80's & early 90's, they are mainly TDK AD & ARX plus a few Chrome SA ones, they all still sound as clear as the day I recorded them. I'm sure that the older (made in Japan) cassettes were a far better quality than the more recent Chinese offerings!

The lawyers for copyright infringement and trademark violations would be having a field day to say the least. It was very entertaining to have this video to watch. I agree you need to look at what you’re buying first. This was the best video I have seen on a knockoff brand. Keep up the good work! This hobby is so fun! I just love it!

I have that cassette but in a TDK's transparent shell. I had to throw the original shell because pins that were holding a pressure pad broke. The sound is excellent! The bass response is strong, and treble is soft. The tape is excellent for recording disco/synthpop/new wave music on it. It will show the real results if you are recording by using Dolby C, S, or dbx with the output level of +16dB. It looks like they used TDK tape to pack it into the Maxwell shell, as I noticed the transparent part of the head cleaner has a red line indicator. You could find those indicators in TDK’s 60-minute cassettes that were manufactured in Japan in the 80s. Dolby S is the best NR system for that because it has a signal to noise ratio of 85 dB, but I more prefer dbx for these tapes because it has a dynamic of 120dB. Thanks to that filter, it will show the real results.

I like the name Maxwell, fits also somehow. In the Netherlands, I remember as a kid an electronics store chain named "Maxwell", I had to think about the cassettes, but thought already "hey, that's different!". Later on, I learned about James Clerk Maxwell, and his laws for electromagnetic fields, probably essential for the invention of almost all electronic stuff, including the cassette recorder ;-)

It's not technically a "knock-off", it would be if it actually said Maxell, but it doesn't. It's an "homage" that through more discussion I've concluded came from General Magnetics. They actually went on to make shells for the likes of Denon and That's. They also did a range of cassettes that look exactly like That's Suono...which it seems they made the shells for. I did a full record of the cassette and there were not drop outs, level problems and it was stable. All in all, this was a decent cassette.

Very glad to see that someone outside Iraq at this centry speaks about maxwell brand. It was my second cassette that I bought in 1987 but with an old cassette disgin no tranagles like the next which you present here. Maxwell LN 60 was a successful cassette s which used for duplication and records in Baghdad and other Iraqies city. I was like a level of successful Singaporean Tony wang cassettes which later became the brand of Genral magnetices LTD. Do you know that Maxwell LN cassettes include a steel pin for Tape guide? Like Tony and old TDK while original Maxell's tape guide pic is from the same plastic from the body inside the cassete. Very thank you for this video. I'll look for other videos soon.

And this comment explains why some of these knock offs are good. When politics limits the access to originals, it doesn't mean consumers in those markets are any less discerning. They can still recognise an ultra cheap product. By copying the original properly, you get a valuable looking product for markets without original, and secondary market in discount stores.

I just copied "Feels So Good" from cassette and I cued it up to the iTunes version and switched back and forth between the two with headphones on and I cannot hear a difference. I did the same thing with a CD rip of "Bad" by U2 to the same result. My 49yo ears that were never good to begin with might be the issue, but there are other cases where I can clearly hear the difference. These were captured using a fairly low end cassette deck. One nice thing about capturing from tape or phono is that you can get the original mix. There were quite a few songs where I just could not find an un-remastered copy of a song on iTunes. A lot of times the remastered version have clipping or even emphasise one track more than another that wasn't present on the original tape and LP releases.

I'm very surprised at how good this "Maxwell" sounds! As a child I was very curious about some old "KDK DC-60" tapes my dad had that were copies of TDKs from the seventies, both shell and J-card (but NOT tape quality, it was light brown, completely matt, sounded horrible). Then, to my amusement, a new wave of Chinese knock-off brands arrived to my country (Argentina) in the nineties, especially (not at all)"Hi-Fi" systems, radios, boomboxes, portable TVs and cassettes. I couldn't pass the oportunity to redeem a lot of hard earned arcade tickets for a new KDK tape in the mid to late 90s! In this case, if I remember correctly, the J-card was a copy from TDK A series from the '80s and the shell was a lazy, low quality copy also from old TDKs (black shell, white label). The less-than perfect copy was somewhat of a disappointment, as my dad's old KDKs looked a lot more like real TDKs... I still have it, of course :-) (tape is darker, sound is not nearly as bad as older "type 0s", but it has a lot of dropouts).

Tony, that UD is 100% real. It was OEMed by Panggung (or whatever it was called back then) in Indonesia. Notice the shell, it looks similar to 90s Maxells. BTW the Singaporean Maxwell could very well be General Magnetics in its early days (you know, the one that supplied some tape and shells to Denon and Taiyo Yuden and BASF in the 90s) 🤔

Makes sense about the Gen Mag stuff actually. I've recently recorded the whole cassette and found it to be actually very good, with no dropouts or loss of signal. Upon opening, it seems that it might be newer than the wrapper suggests. A clear slipsheet, modern looking hubs with those small "peg" retainers. As for the UDI, I've seen a UDE Excel too which seems to have the same cassette in. I'm beginning to think that that UDI I showed is licenced by Maxell, but is not in any way made by them, like with the Panggung "Maxell" UR which is common now.

@@CassetteComeback Phew, just finished another "short" 🤣 writeup on TH. On the topic of Maxwells, just curious: were the hubs more like these: www.ez647.sk/cc/cievky/basf_old_w.JPG or more like these: www.ez647.sk/cc/cievky/other_acme_china.JPG ? No.1 would indicate that it's a BASF collaboration. Quite understandable for SE Asia in general because BASF had a factory in Indonesia, right. And bootlegs. And those weird "Toyota SF" cassettes (popular in the post-Soviet community), one variation being a Goldstar and another one "made in Japan" in a rough shell but with surprisingly good tape wound on BASF hubs: c-90.org/FOR_PROGRAMMER/tapes/%CD%E5%E8%E7%E2%E5%F1%F2%ED%FB%E5%20%ED%E0%F3%EA%E5%20%E7%E2%E5%F0%E8%20-%20Unidentified/Toyota%20SF/0/cassettes_1_0.jpg content.onliner.by/forum/2655518/800x800/87d0f96a281d5b902631b8f1e4234258.jpeg Probably from the same pile/manufacturer/region of origin. That is definitely designed to create confusion in the marketplace - This would be an obvious copyright infraction in the USA. The difference may be in how well the tape ages - I have some Denon HD8 cassettes that I recorded in the early 1980's which still sound great. Check back with the Maxwell LN 90 in 40 years and see how it sounds. Just a theory. Great video.

Can you please do a video on 100 Minutes (50 Minutes Per Side), 110 Minutes (55 Minutes Per Side), 120 Minutes (60 Minutes Per Side) & 180 Minutes (90 Minutes Per Side)? Is the TDK D-180 cassette a good cassette or a type 0 cassette? The 1988 edition of the Maxell UR-120 that is black instead of a see-through shell is a rare cassette. The 1989-2005 see-through Maxell UR-120 cassettes are more common, than the 1988 edition.

I do wonder if when a major manufacturer finished with a certain shell design or label template, whether they sold them on to the less regulated markets of the world, such as the orient, middle east and Africa, for them to do as they wish, with a blind eye turned? Maybe even selling off the equipment that made earlier tape formulations? You know, even a modern, English company would have trouble replicating those inlay graphics with such accuracy. All the text would be in Arial and Tahoma.

Just a question, what tape would you recommend for car use? I recorded some music onto my box of Maxell XLii tapes, on the deck, it sounds wonderful with Dolby C, but with Dolby C in my BMW, it sounds like total garbage...

Road noise sort of cancels out any tape hiss. I just use a decent, basic ferric with no NR personally.

@@CassetteComeback I will search some basic tapes then, now i only have a box of TSK Sa-90's, the Maxell XLii's and the vintage maxell xlii 90 epitaxial, the last ones sound the best on my Denon, maybe some cheap D90's from TDK will do the job?

True, I was a victim as a child once or twice, but it didn't take me long to tell the difference. The catch was the wrapper, some were quite well cloned. The moment you opened the thing up, you noticed you had been ripped off... But if the wrapper let you see the actual cassette through it, you typically could notice the difference quite easily.

This knock-off with the similar sounding name reminded me of an advert for the original Maxell tapes. See this watch?v=Gib916jJW1o It also reminded me of the time my mum thought she'd got a bargain from a Del Boy in the local market... Palmolive soap... turned out to be 'Pam and Olive' soap. It was rubbish soap too. I'm surprised at how good that knock-off tape sounds. However that lower record sensitivity would have been noticeable in recordings made on the typical auto level controlled boomboxes most people were using.
