I've been in similar situations and I hear you. Good job. I am retired now but I felt like holding that steering wheel. A piece of advice for less experienced drivers: Never do a favor to your dispatcher because it will never be returned to you. Especially for NYC.

I've been driving 20 years and you did an amazing job getting in there, with all the pressure that was being put on you, from the cop, to people honking, to the crew pushing you. I know some of the best drivers out here, and they all say you did great as well, they also said you should have told to take a flying leap, but you hung in there the same as I would have, because we take failing personal.

My company was based in Connecticut so NY and Boston were on the plate every day. We drove 53’ trailers with cab over sleepers. The deliveries I made every day required a super human effort with zero reward. NY was tight and congested with subway tracks overhead, everywhere. You really earn your money down in the city. Fun Fact: Those helper guys are useless. They hold a stop sign really great but don’t know a thing about what a driver is trying to do. Frustrating!

Bro, you had me at TRACTOR TRAILER BACK and NY. Boss-level skills! I've heard of drivers using drones to help with blind-spot backing in situations like this. They can see their ENTIRE truck, pedestrians, passenger cars, etc. To all the "spotters": this driver knows his limits. All he needs from you is whether or not he's ALL CLEAR to make his moves.

I'm looking to get into the truckin game in the near future and love watching stuff like this. I've been working in receiving and other types of dock working the past 8 years and I've always enjoyed interacting and conversing with the truck drivers. My favorite part of my last job was communicating with the yard dogs on my two way radio. participating and chiming in on the banter provided me with valuable entertainment while getting through my shift. Those guys could get a trailer in and out of any spot and watching this video brings me back to that. Balls and nerves of steel🤙

I always used to love it when people would tell me how to drive my truck. Sometimes I would just hop out and wave them into the cab and ask them to show me how its done. I will reaffirm what all of the other commenters have voiced. Your skill was absolutely extraordinary. You kept your cool under extremely trying circumstances. Why the detective had to intervene instead of offering a hand is a mystery to me. Drove for 40 years and never ceased to be surprised by how many people, including those receiving the material, rarely understood a tractor trailer needs lots and lots of room, especially a 53 footer with a sleeper and a long nose. They could have moved both the dumpster and the orange barrier on the sidewalk sooner than they did, the skateboarder who darted behind you should have waited and beware of customers who say, "We get big trucks here all the time". They are frequently unaware of differences in trailer lengths and wheel bases. Had the feeling your power steering pump was hurting, judging by the sound. Take a bow for doing about the best urban backing I've had the pleasure to witness. Kudos. Trucker tip: I found, after having endured particularly difficult experiences like yours, it helped me calm down a little if I struck up a conversation with someone-anyone about a topic unrelated to trucks. Sounds silly but it diverted attention away from my own aggravation. Try it. Take care.

Good job, I'm a long time Heavy Haul/Oversize guy, places like that are a fact of life, some of the places I've had to get into with a 4 axle tractor and 4 axle lowboy still give me nightmares, but fortunately I've never hit anything or never refused to deliver. Seems like there's always some idiot offering their 2 cents, I've always been pretty decent about not going off on anybody, but there have been a few times I've just said "STFU and get the F outa my way". Not a good look, but I felt better afterwards, lol. Stay safe and keep on keeping on.

I have never driven truck, so I don't have any relatable experience, but I think you did one fantastic job. The job site frankly should have set it up for them to offload you at another location and put the material on a smaller truck, but you are exactly correct that they are just trying to be cheap. I love you dude!! Reminds me of my brother ground guiding me up a mountain switchback hiking path for the forest service in a business class M2 with 3k gallons. Sketchy, one dually hanging off a drop off on one side. I love the keep cool collected, set the brake, turn the key off, tell the boss to come get it with a sky crane attitude.. but come to your senses and do it for the fun and man points…. I currently drive an f450 w/ a 40ft gooseneck we use to deliver trusses with and I can feel some of that stress with these construction sites. Large home developments with small roads and sharp turns not meant for trucks plus dozens of trucks and other things parked in the road and some. I have been getting a lot of steps in checking sites out before driving down a road to get stuck for who knows how long. Good Job, I had to watch that all the way through. I love that pulling back out forward is at least less stressful than the backin was usually. haha
