This is one of the nicest beaches in Thailand and probably the world, but it had been ruined by over-tourism. The Thai government closed it for over 2 years in order to save the environment and in this video, I'll show you what it's like today, just two months after reopening.

or...you could visit the commune on Koh Phangan that Alex Garland stayed at back in the early 90s and was, so legend has it, the inspiration for the book. It's still there today, and not overly changed. There may be a boat to it running again now, or you can walk through the bush for an hour to find it just like in the movie. Don't worry you don't have to jump off a cliff into water to get there 😅

Was there 2 weeks ago, My fav place in Thailand - Maya Bay. The Government need to keep the controls it has in place as seeing sharks in the bay, means nature is as it should be. Protect this wonderful place

Love Maya Bay, one of the most epic spots in all of Thailand. Got to love a good picture menu Chris. Such a spectacularly beautiful beach. The Beach Movie motivated me to go to Thailand for the first time! Another awesome video Chris. Looking forward to more!

I love that they aren't allowing boats to park in the Maya Bay area. Looks so much more beautiful without looking like a parking lot.

I was there about 10 days ago 😁. Amazing place now that it’s been reopened without all the boats. And as great as your video is, it does not do it justice. It really needs to be experienced in person

Visited Maya Bay in 2003 and although very busy, it was definitely a bucket list item for me. I really like the film, so we'll agree to disagree on that, the director Danny Boyle has a definite style and received critical acclaim for his work with some iconic films. Interestingly enough Danny Boyle also directed the film 28 Days Later, from the same author.

I was at Maya Bay on Sunday, it is definitely worth visiting. If you take the boat around the island there is another area which is just as beautiful with calm waters, close to the Viking cave. Also, now in Bangkok and had to try pad krapao from your place you recommended and wow it was really good.

28 days later is a favorite. The optimistic ending somewhat reminds of the shift/ending in the theatrical version of blade runner. Plan to come back to Thailand in November (hopefully and absent new/different restrictions). Great video! Thanks

Wow great.. Look so peaceful. Had the pleasures of seeing the true beauty of maya beach / bay phi phi back in 2008, an amazing place, just during that time it was becoming too busy. It nice to see that Thai government have limited the tourist. It must be epic with a small amount of tourists. Thank you 🙏

In 2008 I whas at the Maya Beach. At that time there where no floating pontoons to get on the island.. We did transfer into a small canoe / kayak. They brought us at the cost. From the canoe we clambered on the slippery rocks into a small tunnel. Walking through the woods at the beach. Quite an experience in those days. Especially with the rough sea that day. On our way back I did end up falling into the water. I had to swim back at the big boat. Looks a whole lot easier these days whit those floating pontoons.

Koh Phi Phi is so beautiful and hit that place 10 times in 20 years!!! Great videos Canadian Brother! When weed gets legal and this tourist can return to be treated for PTSD - would be another amazing life ride 😆🤣🌅🏖

I guess the battery was empty at the end of the video when you cut to the car ;) I think I won't go to Maya beach, because I want it to stay like this. There are other nice places in Thailand that are not so extremely over run like this place.

Sailed there in the early 90's with my father. Phi Phi was expanding fast! Years earlier you could easily walk between the two beaches but last time I tried that??? Sad the heavy sell is destroying these places!

I was there last month, it was such a disappointment not to be able to slim there. But It's a beautiful place regardless. It was a little busier than in the video though.

The irony of this place is Dicaprio's movie crew bulldozed part of the island to make the movie and it damaged the island for years to come. Info used to be on wiki about it, but it has since been removed. You can still find articles on it however- the Thai govt wasn't happy about the damage the movie production caused. Many articles removed about it- probably not helping DiCaprio's image since he's all about green. I've been to Koh Phi Phi several times- its stunning, beautiful and absolutely amazing- but completely swamped with people. Keep in mind you're there when the pandemic is endemic and its April- December will be an absolute zoo. The big tour boats are non stop and certain people (that's as far as I will go on that comment)do not respect the island and are trash hogs. I really do wish the government would control the # of boats/# of people per boats to access the island. Last time I went, it seemed like 1000 people walking on the sand, 2 dozen boats in the water, whistles going off, people yelling, constant roar of boat engines- it was not relaxing. Getting on a subway in Shinjuku at 8am would have been more relaxing. Limiting people per day would def help on many levels. Anyways, glad you got to experience it with a few people walking by. Looks incredible and I'm glad the place recovered.

I agree with your comment. I was in the Philippines three or four years ago and passed through Boracay on my way to another island. Boracay was a disaster due to being over-run with tourists year after year. So much so that the Philippine government shut the place down for nearly two years to clean it up. PhiPhi seems headed down the same path IMO.

I visited Maya Bay [early 2005?] a month or two after the tsunami. I just happened to be in the area, so thought I'd give a boat driver some work . . . only four of us on the beach. Managed to get a classic beach shot of a girl in a bikini standing at the water's edge looking out . . . probably never get that photo in that location again. To be honest, PhiPhi [both islands] has just been super-exploited over the past 15 years or so. Much like Boracay in the Philippines [which was wisely shut down a few years ago to help it recover from the tourist damage] it's become a place better avoided while you seek out other destinations that have an equal amount [or more] of natural beauty, but without the crowds.

Recently, a movie from Hollywood contacted to be filmed on an island in southern Thailand. But it was rejected by the authorities because the villagers did not agree to change the area. until it may affect the destruction of nature The set may have to move to filming in a neighboring country.

Waste of money and over advertised beach that costs (cost) 200 baht. This also applies to phi phi which is full of people and expensive. There are so many better places. But we think differently. But those I have told about these places went there, and said afterwards that they would have listened to me. Thanks for the great video Congratulations to 22 years❤ Micke from 🇸🇪
