My very first Stardew Valley spouse was Harvey! Lol I totally respect the dislike for him, I can see how he would be perceived as off putting. I think I liked him better than Alex or Shane because they seemed super masculine and off putting (at the time), and both Sam and Sebastian seemed very high school to me and I didn't want to actually marry them. I don't know why at the time I didn't marry one of the girls, but for some reason I found both Harvey and Elliot very charming, but Elliot had more complicated gifts. I think Harvey just felt very safe, like a sweet nerdy guy like Milo from Treasure Planet, which I found endearing. However, six years later I am a Haley stan for life.

My thought process on choosing Harvey was essentially process of elimination. I didn’t want to date Sebastian, Alex or Sam because they all live with their parents or grandparents. In my mind, that makes them teenagers and flirting with a teenager made me feel like a creep. Elliott is too pretentious and Shane was a dickhead (at least at first). That left Harvey. Once you start dating him, he’s actually really sweet. His ten heart event is adorable! He’s a good husband too. (Also, my boyfriend wears round glasses like Harvey, so I’m guessing that was subconsciously part of my decision).

About the writing and your characters just have to do something , yes! Happens SO often. my characters just go off on a completely unplanned thing and I have no idea where it came from.
