In June 1995 I took some footage at the Active Pass Lightstation when a long fog "tube" was flowing through the pass. This video captures the sound of the old fog horn at Georgina Point.

This is the classic two tone fog horn sound you hear in movies....

Yep love that sound

Not quite. What you hear in movies is are classic F2T Diaphone horns (look up the East Brother Island Lighthouse fog horn). This sounds like a diaphragm horn (basically a large truck or train horn) set up to emulate one.

I grew up on Galiano Island, right across Active Pass from this lighthouse.. On winter nights I could hear this foghorn echoing through the islands. After I grew up, they changed the tone to something more grating. Thanks for a reminder of a very peaceful and comforting sound from my childhood!

I love the other fog horn sound at 0:59 on.....It makes the atmosphere sound quite musical. The close one sounds awesome too. Great video!

yes, that's fine. On old nautical charts you can see the different intervals and tones listed for different locations.

I believe it’s a Tyfon 110/90 combo. Very common in the ship and lighthouse field. The 110/90 refers to the frequency (hz) of the sound. The Golden Gate south tower has a pair of Tyfon 110s one facing each direction .

In this instance the horns are timed to imitate a diaphone (Like was probably originally there) and to differentiate from ships horns-timing it to create the fog horn affect-BEEEEE-OH!
@mbta10515 жыл бұрын
Actually those would be an Airchime KM85/110 combo. Made by the late great Robert Swanson himself, and I’m sure it was him who invented them to be timed that way .

There would of been a little stutter between notes. Diaphones slide up and then down like a Portimento
