This is how to get access to the filter screen for the pump. Some washers have an access panel because this is a regular maintenance item, but Maytag really makes you work for it with this model.
This is a Maytag mhw8630hc, and procedure may be similar for other models. Some have a bottom facing filter and a bottom access panel so check that before starting.
!!UPDATE!!: Another user has found a good way to reach the filter from the bottom. Watch my video to get a good view of all the parts, but if you can tip up the washer and access the bottom, the new way of doing this is much easier. I think my video shows the way a service tech would do the job since the filter clearly is meant to open from the front, but sneaking around the bottom is a lot quicker!

In Jon Bartosch Video at 2:40 you see 2 white knobs. There are 4 of them total on the filter assembly. Pull them up through the hole at the bottom of the washer. This releases the filter assembly which then can be moved into the hole to disconnect one wiring connector. Now you can pull the whole filter assembly through the hole and unscrew the filter freely under, outside the washer. All done easy in a few minutes.

You just pull it out, and then tilt it back. It’s awkward but do able. Also make sure to put some kind of kickstand under it in case it wants to fall on you while under it. I used a 4x4 chunk I had in my garage. Of course use caution when doing this just as you would jacking up a car and getting under it. But it’s much easier.

Thank you so much! I did it myself exactly as you described. When I bought this machine, I didn’t know it was possible for a manufacturer to deliberately obstruct access to the filter. Now I’ve learned the hard way that when I buy an appliance, I have to check that obvious maintenance features are accessible!

This video makes me appreciate my slightly older Maytag front loader, which is still going strong. While the filter access is in the front and identical to yours, all I have to remove 3 screws from the lower cover, it's a breeze.

Thanks for this video. What a major design blunder not placing a simple panel/door in front of the filter for easy access. But it only took about an hour and a half to get this done. Saved me a technician service call.

Great video. I guess the models after these, I have the 6630HC. they have turned the trap 45degrees. This allowed the person to just remove the back panel you can easily access the trap. Even newer models they've made an access door at the front of the washer so you just open the little door and the trap is right there you don't have to do anything but turn the trap valve to open. I was seriously disappointed when I pulled the back of my washer off this morning to find I had watched the wrong video, that's how my luck goes though. Luckily I found your video. I dred dealing with the front door on the washer that seal is MF'er to get off and getting it back on is nearly a two man job. Since I already have it disconnected now I may as well get after it and clean it out. Your video was short but thorough. After watching so many videos yesterday I saw a guy run water through his after he removed the trap. He simply dumped hot water into the drum and let it filter through. I was surprised at how much gunk was still floating around in there. Afterwards he wiped down the internals as best as he could with a rag and vinegar. I'll use your steps to get to the trap and I'll use his experience when I get to cleaning. I'm sure mine is loaded with tons of dog hair, change and junk from my shop I've left in my pockets over time. Great video thanks for keeping it simple.

Hi Jon. Thanks for the video. It was very detailed. I saw another video of a different model that had a front access door so my husband chose to take a short cut and cut a square at the bottom of the panel in front of the valve. He then used magnetic sheeting to cover the new opening.

@@lauradocimo6458 Hi Laura. We tilted the washer back so my husband could see underneath the washer where and eyeballed the valves location. We used a marker to draw a line up and around to the spot we determined was good. We drew a square about 3 inches on each side. He put on goggles, ear muffs (or ear plugs) and used a cut off grinder. When you start to cut, many sparks will fly so make sure nothing flamible is in the area. After the square has been cut, you will need a metal file to smooth any jagged edges. To cover the hole he used magnetic sheeting(amazon). FYI.... my husband is a retired mechanic so he already had the tools and materials. Good Luck, hope this helps!

I must add to the accolades for this video. This is beyond helpful for a difficult project. The design is totally for aesthetics forgetting the practicality of getting to the drain pump. Some call for monthly examination of this filter which is not practical with this design. Thank you. Thank you.

Thank you so much Jon! I was tempted to cut an access hole in front🙂. While I had this apart, I notice that the drum seal that was replaced a year ago by a tech, the drain holes weren't aligned with the drum, so I fixed that too.

Great help Jon. My Maytag washer had a problem draining, so I cleaned my pump filter using your step by step instruction. Everything went well. Except for the ring/spring that is a pain to put back in. I found a cloth mask stuck on my filter. Wondering how it passed thru the drum. Thanks for uploading this video. Keep up the good work!

Ha, since I did this the first time, I had to open it up again and the pump had like 5-6 kids spandex masks in it. The fabric is so thin, they can work their way around the front side of the drum. Now we wash all masks in a “bra bag” to stop them from escaping.

I really appreciated this video. It was a great help. Got the filter cleaned and cleaned the washer a bit at the same time. At first, I had difficulty installing the ring but I made myself something to hold the spring open 6 inches (end to end) while I installed it; it was pretty easy after that.

@@insaneghost7451 you see them (4) at the bottom of your washer. You access them through the hole at the bottom, or push the knobs in from the bottom with a thin pen and the filter assembly is loose to comes out, but you must unplug one electric connector to get it fully out through the hole. And there you have full access to the filter.

@@1xxtonyzz1 Its not "All done easy" for "all" of us. I have my dryer stacked on the washer in a very small wash room. I'll need to take the dryer off and move it to another room if I need to tilt the washer to gain access to be bottom of the washer. This is a design flaw compared to other brands. There is no way you are going to convince us that this design is better than having an access door like other modern day washers.

Thank you for this video. Gives me a good idea of where the filter is. Like others have said, sure enough if you just lean the unit back and get underneath it, you’ll see the filter right there. For me, the big obstruction was actually in the tube between the drum and filter, so this was perfect. It’s awkward, but certainly better than ripping the whole thing apart

You can only tilt back if your not sitting on one of the pedestals. I have the little pedestals with slide out drawers but you can't get up in it enough to work effectively.

I'm not sure why you went thru all that to clean it. I just tipped the unit back and was able to access the drain from under. Maybe because i don't have the stands? Still, i would think you would still be able to access it from under if you tip it from the stand. I had to pull the hose at the drum as there was bra padding stuck in the line stopping drainage. Thanks for the vid, if did give great info on how to disassemble the unit and it came in handy when i had to get to the detergent pump to clean that out. 👍👍

@@1xxtonyzz1 Is there supposed to be a metal panel covering the access hole in the washer's bottom or is it open. This one is covered up by the pedestal. Just wondering if it's supposed to have a cover. Mine didn't come with one but it looks like it may have had one at one time but they engineered it out.

The sd code is basically saying there is an extended rinse cycle because there are too many “suds”. If you are using an he detergent you only need about two tablespoons. Not a full cap

Saved me. Thank you. Have you seen suds coming from the top rear of the machine. Thought it was a bad hose. Opened the back panel and there was evidence of moisture running down the back.

It does have a ventilation system for the 24 hour hold and wash and dry cycle. If you use the wrong soap and it over-suds it could come out of the back. Make sure the soap is made for “HE” or high efficiency washers.

I accessed filter trap by remove front bellow clamp, reaching down the trap with a pair a flyer to unscrew trap door and pull it up to clean. No screw to unscrew. It helps if you have small skinny arms and the tool to put the clamp back. Did it twice already.

An angle grinder, not sure I'd recommend. Made kind of a mess and the edges of the hole were really really really sharp and kind of jagged.

@@enderbushy Did you end up cutting the hole? I'm just going to get a 5" or 6" hole saw bit and turn this into a 5 min job. My units are stacked in a tight place and I have no intention of de-stacking it.

@aka1Khalid I did not do it yet. My one set is a huge job to unstack as well. I ended up taking off the seal between the drum and the door and reaching down in there to drain it out. But it was a wet mess.

Thank you! I would imagine, I void the warranty if I cut an opening in front to allow access. After reading all literature I could find on my machine (MHW8630HW3) it is blatantly obvious they were avoiding cleaning out filter as regular maintenance. Wish it is!

I am astounded at the incompetent engineering and design. Dismantling the entire washer (not to mention removing the stacked dryer) to accomplish regular maintenance is unforgivable. I am going to cut an access panel myself. Then the washer's look will better represent the quality of the design.

I am looking for a new front loader at this moment. Like your post perfectly sums up all my incongruent thoughts on this! Beyond pissed when I realized where they put the filter. I used to be an engineering student and I always thought pragmatism reigns supreme and it seems this was missed by GREATLY by the eng team at Maytag. This issue is literally pushing me way from a brand I have like for at least 8 years.

Thanks for the video. I just fixed our 1 year old (just out of warranty) Maytag Front Loader that would not drain after each wash. It left the clothes dripping water. The problem was a laundry sheet was stuck in the filter. I'm still wondering how that sheet made it to the filter since the holes in the drum are so small. Anyway, thanks. You just saved me a costly service call.

I had face masks trapped in mine. They work their way around the seal at the front of the drum. Any small flat fabric can get pulled in. Socks seem immune, but anything thinner and small is fair game.

@@kimhorn6714 check the link in the description. There is another way where you can go through the bottom if you can tip the machine back at an angle, but that is also physically difficult and you have to be sure the machine doesn’t fall.

@@jonbartosch1903 Thanks for the response! unfortunately I have my dryer stacked on washer - so neither of those ideas work for me - it's ok - I am more disappointed that they removed the little "door" from the front as in my last unit - If I run into problems - I will seek help to take units apart and down for a cleaning. Since I have a stacker, I just took the big spring and rubber seal out of the door and squeezed my arms down between the drum and pulled the filter. Although it was hard to drain it....

Man, wish I would have watched this video first. Took me about an hour to figure out how to get the front off. My issue was a persistent SD (5D) or Sud error. Found a quarter in that filter. Seems to have been enough to prevent proper drainage. Also, you don't have to take the gasket spring band off. If you take the top hex bolts off and the bottom 4 screws out, you'll have just enough room to lift from the bottom and access the filter. Granted, it's probably a much better idea to remove the whole front instead of possibly damaging the gasket.

Why did maytag get rid of separate kick. Plate, use to be all you had to do was take off to get to the pump!

Believe it or not, that previous years model had a removable cover underneath, so you had to tip up the washer to get under it. I’m sure having she washer at an angle was great for drainage…. Then the decided to remove the cover altogether. I’ve since cut a hole in the front of mine and used a plastic cover there, lol.

U don't gotta do all that , just remove the unhook the spring remove the seal and u can reach down under and get the filter that way , all that disassembly is unneeded. I found this out the hard way . But makes getting to the filter 100 times easier. Hardest part for me was getting spring back on 😂

You can easily access the filter from underneath by tilting the washer on it's side. I have the pedestal riser with the drawer and since I would need another person to tilt it on it's side and back upright I thought I'd first try accessing the filter from removing the back panel first. Luckily my arms are long and I was able to pull out and clean the filter from the back! The drain tube behind the filter was full of more gunk than the filter so it might be worth people trying that as well.

Thank you! YES! I did exactly what was described in this video about a year and a half ago, put it all back together again after cleaning it then I read your comment before I was going to do the same thing today since it was having the exact same issue and guess what? It took me 20 minutes instead of 2 hours. While I was down there I highly recommend trading out the pressure clamps with screw clamps to make it even easier. Two plugs three hoses and pushing up on the white pegs had the entire pump assembly out. Thank you thank you thank you and also with this perspective that you can tilt it up and accomplish the same task, looking at the comments here and people talking about cutting access holes is madness

Just watched this and i think i found a better way, you can Tilt it up against the wall. Come in from the bottom and undo the filter that way, you have to do a reach round but I just did it in like 3 mins. Thanks for the vid

I bought my washer 9 months ago. It sounds like a coin has made its way inside. I hear it clink when I spin the basket. Will it eventually end up in this filter? I watched another video showing how to remove the back panel, remove the heating element and then look inside to attempt locating the coin. I do not have easy access to the rear panel and wondered if it would eventually end up inside this filter assembly. Although not simple, removing the front panel will be easier for me. I am a small 63 year old woman, there's no way I can move this washer on my own. It's a beast!

I have had mine for about 2 years now. Runs great, accept it is not dispensing detergent. I have cleaned the whole detergent drawer out and plumbing. Soap dispenser improves slightly then stops working. No codes and soap pump works, but I suspect the soap dispensing pump is not pumping like it should, performance wise.

My front loader from 1999 just went out. That one was just two screws. I don't know about buying another Maytag if I litterally have to take it apart.

The model before this one had an access door but it was underneath the washer, so you had to tilt it way back to get to it. Check the manual of any washer before buying to see how to clean the filter. If it’s not in the manual, stay away.

right, IDK my mother is older and may haver issues trying to get clothes out of the washing machine on a top loader. Who knows, i'm sure will look around tomarrow. @@jonbartosch1903

The model prior to this did have an access panel on the bottom. Is that what you mean, or did you loosen the filter assembly and bend it out through the bottom to access it?

By request , let me clarify... at the front of the washer at the very bottom below the door there are four bolts. I removed the four bolts and tilted the washing machine,, way back (actually rested it in horizontal cinder blocks) so that I had some room to stick my arm up behind the front panel. It was just enough to reach the front cover of the lint trap. It was not easy and certainly not what the manufacturer intended for you to do. But it got the job done. You have to feel around and you're really flying blind. I should also mention that my washer is on a concrete slab with a floor drain so I didn't care if water flooded the place. So that may be an issue for you. You might need to put some towels down.

This is a hard no for me due to the location of my washer/dryer. I have a very small laundry room due to heating and air ducts in the way. I have to take the dryer out of the room completely, then get the washer over the drip tray and turn it. Voided my warranty but I drilled 4 holes in the front bottom and cut an access hole with a jigsaw. Now I can reach it anytime to clean the filter out.

Insane. My model (MHW5630HW) is the same. The manual lied, as do the online ones - we don't have a lower dispenser tray, and it's not behind the upper dispenser (which would have been neat). So I have to basically take the thing apart to "see" if the filter has a problem - which it might not. I am certainly going to contact Maytag and bitch - even if it only helps new buyers. One simple little access hatch like other major brands, was too complicated? I can see the design team: "but the filter is on top, we can't provide access! Ah, nevermind...it looks cool!" I bought Maytag from multiple recommendations - and the washer is extremely good. But not even telling the owners what the correct thing to do is when the pump needs emptying assumes we are all going to have 6 month Service contracts? I don't, and I would prefer to do my own minor maintenance - this is stupid and wastes my damn time! Sorry, got angry for a sec... :-) Finally, thank you Jon for this video - you saved my sanity!

I also have an MHW5630HW2. This helped me fix my Sd code error problem. I found 3 kid sized cloth masks clogged in the filter.

@@1xxtonyzz1 Thank you for this idea as I was not going to take my washer all apart to clean the filter. We tipped the washer on its side and we could reach up and unscrew the filter. Took 2 or 3 minutes and found some dirt and a loonie. My washer is model# MHW6630HC0.

I have a mhw6000, purchased in 2011. Sounds like they still don't care about ease of customer access if they haven't changed this filter issue by now, so my next washer will not be a Maytag. Whoever makes such decisions to cheap out and make more hassles for people should be fired. They obviously don't care about their reputation or repeat customers. It's simply bad business.

If you just tip the washer back against the wall and reach up through the big hole in the center of the bottom , then just unscrew and remove filter clean and reinstall, no lost water , no disassembly, 5 min job, just did mine again today

This is stupid by design so that you call their service repair or give up and buy a new one. I wish I saw your video before I went through the back today. You way is more tedious but way better visually. I didn’t know about the top removal so I took the screws off the front bottom and did it by touch because I had no visibility. NEVER buying a Maytag again. I had the model before this and the pump filter was in the back (which is why I went through the back this time initially). Much easier to access. They made this harder on purpose to squeeze more money out of you.
