Washer drain pump began making a terrible noise on my Maytag Neptune MAH4000AWW washing machine.
This quick impromptu video highlights the removal, servicing, and installation of the Neptune Drain pump and Recirculation pump.
Note: Some techniques observed in this video may not be the correct methods, and in some parts can be dangerous. Proceed at your own risk.

Just found your video after checking everywhere including talking with Maytag themselves about the exact same thing you just did and they had nothing. What a Blessing. Thanks so much. Randy

Another thanks from me here. Your procedures were spot on. The culprit in our case was a plastic twist tie.

Mine is a 3000AWW without the recirc pump....how curious they would add a recirc pump when they were having so many problems with this series washer. I put in the new drum bearings/seal, sent the top circuit board off for repair, replaced the door 'wax' switch, the belt and she was off and running for over 17yrs now without a hitch. Also there's a balance switch that goes bad or is intermittent. As you look at the machine from the front with the panel off, it's facing you on the top right. Elementary check valve in the pump. The pumps swivel out so that the feet pull out through larger holes....no screws on mine. Same principle as yours...slightly different.

Those "drilled holes" are the weep holes that go to the inside of the hub. They are factory and normal.

I have a question on why my clothes are still wet after the final spin cycle of my MAH5500AWW washer. I took the back panel apart and the belt seems to be OK. At no time was the belt slipping. The washer during its spin cycle rotates slowly clockwise for about 15 seconds then counterclockwise for another 15 seconds and it repeats itself. The RPM is only about 1-2 RPM which seems very very slow. There is also always water in the drum as I hear the water sloshing around inside it, but the water does drain and the inside of the washer (where the clothes are) never has any residual water. Do you what might be the problem? I expected the drum to spin really fast during the spin cycle and for the water inside the drum to drain completely. Otherwise the washing machine operates as if nothing is wrong.

I found the same looking hole, in the outer tub. I have not found any information, on what it is. If you happen to find out, please let me know. Thank.you for posting.

My washer made a similar sound. Found out it was from drain pump sitting loose on its cradle.

I meant to say my control board seems ok. I did not look at the back part. Wondering if I should.

This is helping a lot! Before I dive into this project, I have a question I hope you can help me out with! This was happening for a while as these were this set was gifted to me.. well the noise from the pumps and shortly after stopped working entirely. Makes strange noise I can’t identity when I begin the load then never cycles just pushes some water through. Is this a lost cause!:(

Can you provide more detail on how you tested the pumps? It looked like you just snipped the power cable and then plugged it into the outlet... seems a little dangerous... looks like its about $80-$100 part that I'd rather not have to replace.

Hello. Thank you for posting your video. I am going to attempt and fix mine. We have the same washer and dryer. I opened my washer up because it is not draining. I checked the wax motor and the electrical board nothing seemed to be burned. My wax burner does have its end black so that’s not the problem. So I think it’s the motor :(. I tried opening the back and watched it through a cycle. It seems to spin and seems to drain a little. But at the end of the cycle the drum is full of water. It’s not making any noises so I am hoping it just needs a cleaning. I hope I don’t need to replace the motors. If I do have to replace it do you know where I can buy one? Would you know why it seems to drain some but not all?

Hey ernotw, if the machine isn't draining, and your control board seems ok and you have the newer wax motor for the lock, I would suspect a bad pump. If you are handy with electrical, you can attach main electrical power to the drain motor. If it begins to drain normally, your problem lies somewhere else. If it does not drain, I'd suspect the pump. Best thing to do is to try to drain the washer with a shop vac, then, when the washer is near empty, use a shop vac to apply a vacuum to the drain hose, that will suck the remaining water out. At that point, I'd inspect the pump for any obstructions, if no obstructions are found, ebay has decent priced pumps. I would stick to a Maytag/Whirlpool OEM Pump, and not a cheap knockoff. More tests you can do is if you have a multimeter, test for A/C Current on the two leads of the pump when it should be draining.

kirbyyasha wow! Thanks for the quick response! I really am not handy and have only done what I have done so far by watching KZfaq videos on the wax motor. I came across your video after discovering I had the newer wax motor. Now I am afraid it’s the pump. But thanks to your video I will attempt to check the pump out tomorrow. I do have a shop vac and my two 13 year old boys that can help so cross your fingers I too find I pretty necklace instead of replacing a pump. Afraid I am not that brave to check the pumps if they are working. Maybe i can take it to someone to check it for me. Will let you know.

kirbyyasha I have removed the both pumps. Sad to say I did not find any obstruction. On the black pipe shaped like a y I thought there was lint but it wasn’t. It is some sort of mesh. I accidentally punctured it. I simply gave it a twist so the punctured part is against the black pipe. The pumps are really dirty. Mine too seems to have water going inside. I am going to clean it and put engine oil. Once it’s cleaned I will take it to the electrician in town to test it for me. Ugh was hoping it was something stuck. Well we will see tomorrow.

I don't recall a mesh inside the pipe, wonder if that is an obstruction? I believe the tubes should be clear. If you can get a photo and send it to me I can check.

Oh and you are welcome! Any way to help keep a Neptune on the road. I love my machines, and with how old they are, I really want to see how long I can truly get them to last as I hear nothing but horror stories from modern appliances. People love em, then they hate em after 5-6 years.
