So tonight I took your advice and put out all the colors of the palette. I set out for first color layer on a golden retriever. I threw caution to the wind and just started mixing to see what would surface. I ended up integrating colors I did not originally plan for, and I think I have a stronger portrait than I would have had otherwise. Great advice!

Interesting, but the way I save my paint for the next day is to put it in those little film canisters that held the film that you used to buy....I guess I am old enough to have lots of them! I would say, my best tip is to use a light touch when the paint comes off the brush. Scrubbing the paint to thin on the canvas will only give you bad results. Also, I never glaze anything.....but I am a "take what you get" painter or a "move on" method painter. I guess the real name for what I just said is, Ala Prima style. But look at my last name, I am a Van Gogh freak and he (of course) worked that way! I even double load my brush. A post on that would be nice!

You do give some solid advice. Idk if hairspray is archival? Master’s brush soap is pretty good too for cleaning brushes. Probably don’t use graphite on commissions, we were told in school that it can, over years migrate to the oil painting surface. There are lots of other things to draw with. :)

@MazArtStudio
@MazArtStudio 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can but after some research I’ve realised that you do need to leave acrylic 2-3 days to cure - I’ve always thought it was way quicker than that but it’s not. Check out my video oil over watercolour & you’ll see the articles and research I’ve referred to. It can be done but to be archival and safe give it the curing time (or use watercolour for underpainting which is a traditional 19th century approach again I covered in the video ). Hope this helps.

Dawn dishwashing liquid and water is wonderful to use as well. Will take oil out of your clothing, to a certain degree, that is. Unless you get into the paint as much as I do. LOL Thank you for the wonderful tips! (Thank you for the free downloads.) That will make my painting life much better. I recommend Daler Rowney Georgian for starting out I’ve used it for years and still use it for classes. . I started experimenting during the pandemic and These days I’m paying a bit more and I like Gamblin artist oils. But I still think Georgian oils are great. It’s just there is a slight quality difference with artist quality.

I use terpentine to wash off the paint from the brush while I am painting but as you mentioned it creates headaches etc. Do you use the baby oil while painting to clean your brushes or what do you do. I am knew to your channel and have only watched two of your videos
@MazArtStudio
@MazArtStudio 3 жыл бұрын
i use baby oil for cleaning only you must make sure that there is none on the brush - If i have to change colours between these day I have a tiny container of oil medium (usually the lean because it has thinners in) and I dip into that to take off excess paint - between colours you really don’t have to have the brush super clean - then at the end I use the baby oil to clean them properly and if you want to you can finish with soap and water to remove the baby oil (I don’t always tho).

By the way if you block in your underpainting and let it dry 5 days, I think you are better off working in acrylic. But you can put 2 maybe 3 layers of oil on top of each other at the same time. Sure, you will be working wet on wet but I think, you will get more variety in your painting. So I do my base coat and finish color at the same time. Now I am giving my secrets away!

Yep. But I only dip the tips of the blender into the oil then fluff up on a clean paper towel. You’ll need to do a few times then always make sure there’s no baby oil left on the brush.

Why choose baby oil rather than linseed oil for cleaning brushes? Is it mainly the difference in cost or are there other reasons?

And on a similar note, why choose baby oil over plain mineral oil? Johnson's baby oil is just mineral oil and fragrance, with perhaps some Shea and cocoa butter thrown in. Are there advantages to the extra ingredients in baby oils?

I typically use the cheapest I can get from eBay. The brand/smell etc is irrelevant. I buy in bulk from eBay and it’s got no smell.

Who knows why I comment but...if I put out paint that I end up not mixing w/anything I just tap the end of the tube, the paint settles and I put the color back into the tube! I guess I have been painting a long time to figure that one out or that is an obvious idea. Anyway, if you "stretch" out your paint to thin you will be no better then those painters who have TV shows and you can do "non" paintings like they do! I do not even call them paintings....they are just stained canvas.
