Mazda 3 2014-2020 Review

In past years, the Mazda3 has rarely figured amongst the family hatchback sector's stronger offerings. In its third generation form though, it deserved far more careful consideration. Redesigned from the ground up in 2014, the MK3 Mazda3 proved to be powerful, efficient and very good to drive. If you're shopping for a used family hatch from the 2013-2018 period, you probably weren't considering buying one. But you probably should be.

In Australia for some years this series was the biggest selling new car. Period.

This is an amazingly comprehensive review of the 3 line. Though it covers more or different options than we have in the States, it still is a valuable, informative examination of this vehicle, valuable for someone in the market for one as they come on the used market. This review still has great value years on from when these vehicles were offered new. Glad I ran across this video.

Brilliant in depth review of the mazda 3, best I've seen

Hadn't seen this before. Probably the best review out there on this car. I've had one for a few years and it's been bulletproof. For anyone looking into getting one avoid the diesel as they can be problematic and expensive to fix. The 120 is the pick of the range and has been shown to be putting out closer to 140bhp hence the brisk 0-60 sprint. The engine is exactly the same as the 165 version and can be derestricted to about 175bhp for around £300. He's spot on with the observations on the downsizing of engines. I owned a 1.2 puretech 130 Peugeot which turned into a complete disaster with a disintegrating cambelt that runs in oil. Similar issues are also present in the ford ecoboom engines. These are criminally overlooked in the family hatch sector which is a shame as they are fun to drive with decent handling and a gearshift that is almost mx5 level in feel.

@@MK-rs9uwmine is a late 2016 with 60k on the clock so 6 years old. It's driven through some horrible country lanes during winter and there's no sign of body corrosion. I haven't really checked the chassis but nothing is flagged on the MOT. I do use a pressure washer on the underside during winter to keep the crud off. The paint is fragile, especially soul red. I just had the whole of one side resprayed although that was mainly down to a previous shoddy repair.

I believe turbos are the culprits that make both petrol and diesel vehicles less reliable. At least this seems to be the general trend.

A close family member has had a 2017 120ps petrol sportnav for around 3 and 1/2 years. It hasn’t been the bulletproof japanese-reliability car that we hoped it would be, the engine has been fine but it’s everything else. Their yearly milage is quite a way below average yet things like brakes, and corroded brake lines have been proven to wear very very quickly; more than other cars in the family from other brands that do way more miles. Also the wheels have corroded more than you would expect for a 6 odd year old car. And it does not get the MPG it should do no matter what. Other than the engine I would say this isn’t “extremely reliable” like japanese manufacturers have a reputation for. It’s very middle of the road or even below average reliability sometimes. We don’t even live in a particularly harsh environment either, just a typical UK climate.

A Very good review let down by 2 important factors! 1. Inexplicably, no mention at all of by far the Best Mazda3 variant and that is the the 2.5L 138KW top of the range SP25 Luxury model! 2. The strange on screen colour of the attractive Soul Red Premium Metallic which looks like an odd Orange colour from the 70's & nothing like it actually does!? I've owned 2 of the Mazda3 SP25 variants over 15 years. The BL and BN in both Silver Metallic and Machine Grey Premium colours. They are by far the best models with the best performance, handling, agility & absolutely every feature & technololgy included! Truly Amazing Vehicles! 💯😃👍
