This is Mazda's more hardcore version of the BT-50 dual-cab ute. It adds a single hoop steel bull bar, flared wheel arches and a sports bar to toughen up its look. The 2021 Mazda BT-50 Thunder competes with things like the Ford Ranger FX4 Max, Nissan Navara Warrior and the Toyota HiLux Rugged X. Paul Maric tests it out to see if it's any good.

So, After speaking to the Dealer and their supplier, they have outsourced a bulk of the accessories to said Brands, Like RedArc.

And the bull bar isn’t wide enough to meet the flares properly either. It’s like a 4wd supercentre catalogue vomited all over it

Reminds me of a teenager who has purchased a Chinese 4x4 kit for there car bolted it on and thinks it looks "Fully Sick" and will perform evan better on and off road !! Congrats Mazda you have turned a clean nice looking ute into a cheap looking over priced scrubs car!!

$69k is a joke....you could get a GT for $60k, and spend the extra $9k instead on a bulbar, suspension, spotlights, off-road tyres, bash plates and snorkel. it would be a more capable rig then that bt-50 thunder

Looks like someone bolted some plastic to it one Sunday afternoon.. wasted opportunity really as the ute itself is solid. I think you would be better off buying a standard model and adding the mods yourself

It's nuts. I look in the states you can get a RAM TRX for 95k usd. At least the trx price is justified with the 702 hp hellcat engine

Snorkel is pointless unless you are one of the few doing deep water crossings and have sealed off everything else that would need to be sealed for that purpose.

Love the videos. The appeal of the auto for me is reversing the caravan and trailers. My last BT50 was manual and with the infamous dual mass clutches they put in these days. I got 120k out of it and changed to solid (noisier and not as smooth but a lot more durable). So in answer, it is longevity, ease of reversing trailers etc and hill starts when towing (with that dual mass clutch)

I do agree the dual mass is no where near as hardy, but I believe alot of the premature clutch wear is due to driver error. People build habits and especially older generations who grew up with single mass continue to drive them like so. I've hit 300,000 kms on my 2017 bt-50, and have towed a loaded trailer for work related reasons for At least 100,000 of them kms, still yet to have the slightest clutch slip but I have done a diff twice now.. but again this is only my experience.

Good honest review. I prefer driving a manual and have just ordered a GT in Manual. I find it strange that dealers push the auto so heavily. Manufacturers are not getting a true reflection of demand for MT because dealers are swaying the numbers at the sales desk. When shopping for a 1st gen Navara Warrior with MT I was literally told by the dealer they were not available as a manual and that the only option was an AT. When ordering the GT I was questioned if I was really sure I wanted a MT as adaptive cruise was only available on AT. If I am happy to have a manual then I am happy to slow the vehicle myself when using cruise.

Maybe the salesman gets better commission selling auto but on the other hand they probably had no Mt's and couldn't be stuffed searching for any or like in my experience the salesperson didn't know sh*t and just there to sell

Consistently watch all your reviews. Would love if you'd include opening the engine bay and giving a brief review about it. That's what i feel missing compared to other reviewers

I have an Amarok with the brilliant ZF 8-speed auto. Got it for same price a manual when VW had deals on but I wanted the Auto as it 1) had more torque available from the engine tune 2) it’s a Full-time 4wd which is great for slippery boat ramps and roads, no having to worry after you get stuck! 3) can tow 300kg more weight than the manual 4) much more pleasant to drive in city traffic where, let’s face it, it spends most of its time. It goes off road no problem and never had an issue even though it doesn’t have a low range transfer case.

Is Isuzu due for an equivalent? Can you close the tonneau cover with the key or a button in the cab like the wildtrack? If not its a bit of a miss pricing it the same and 3k for auto is a bit excessive

More great reviews, love your work. The sports bar looks like the apprentice measured it. Waaaay too high IMHO. Otherwise, nice looking changes, slightly better pricing than say the RuggedX that it also goes against (although it's not as "complete" as the RuggedX missing the snorkel in particular, if that's the audience it's pitched at, but has the elec tonneau cover more like the Rogue, so some swings and roundabouts). Nope, not on my list, but honestly most of these higher end will appeal to a very specific niche of buyer so it's not a surprise this one doesn't tick my boxes....

I've got one on loan from Essendon Mazda. My wheel arches are arnt even slapped on evenly I have 10ml rhs lip and 50 ml LHS lip. Is it preproduction ???

I can't speak for everyone else but with a diesel manual the gearing would be short because of the narrow power band and you would be shifting all the time. Plus, I would only buy a manual in a sporty car, not in a daily driver. But I do love my manual.

I have manual and love it. But realistically I live in the absolute middle of nowhere so I only change gears every half hour or so when I go through a town and have to go 5th to 4th then back to 5th after the town

Looks good but I do think that a suspension and tyre package would have been better, also no towbar ?? Oh as for the auto manual debate I own a current manual Astina hatch because that's my choice I'm not lazy 😜😂

10k more then the X-terrain, and a half effort job (as it is ATM). X-terrain plus add a good bull bar is such a nicer package IMO.

I'll start with I have ordered the Manual. The biggest appeal for Auto is the remote start, auto speed assist, and all that kinda stuff. I Personally think it needs the Lift kit, a better snorkel than the one that can be optioned, AT tyres, and an Alloy spare (been advised it is a Steel Spare). I chose the Mazda over the Isuzu because of the Accessories available. Isuzu bad bugger all in comparison.

I put a deposit on an Ranger xls with prem pack, this is nice but not for an extra 20k. I like the colours though.

Why would Mazda not upgrade the tyres and rims? Some high spec ATR tyres would be better. Still think the older model BT-50 is a better Ute with the Ford Ranger underpinnings.

As much as I love Mazda, (as I own one and so does family - ex toyota fan) I think it's a bit silly to put lights on the bullbar. The entire purpose of the bullbar is to protect the vehicle. So hitting an animal by accident or getting into a minor fender bender is going to cost the driver probably the same amount as it would have, had he not have the bar on. Unless I'm missing something.

where the bullbar ends and the flairs start look crap. They should line up. Wheel look to small. What about the suspension upgrade.

Why on earth would they decrease the approach angle ? Like many people go for after market bumpers not just because it's more solid but it significantly increase the approach angle

Exactly. Increased approach angle and bigger wheels by eliminating the front guard. This has neither.

Bryson. I think the last thing manufacturers think of when marketing this sort of version of their vehicles is enhancing its offroad ability. The priority is simply making it look "tough".

Just went to my local mazda dealer and they said they arent making them anymore because of supply issues of lower models. What a waste when I can get a SP and basically put all the same attachments for 10k more when its the same version ute :/

Brilliant review as always. Like other reviewers on this channel, I don’t get why they made such a beautiful car put together so well and then with the thunder, everything seems like a tacky add on. I realise you mention this is preproduction. I really hope they clean it up and make it more in line with the car. The gaps/alignment/thrown together approach is embarrassing. Love your channel though.

They need a bit of refinement with the front end. The bull bar installation doesn’t look great. Also to have incandescent bulbs seems a bit cheap. Then the plastic steps, why not steel, which could double as a rock rail. Finally those front wheel mouldings looks horrible, it reminds me of my old Mazda Tribute! It’s a nice try (bonus marks for the aggressive rims)...

Ordered a new Ranger Raptor. I've owned a few duel cabs (Hilux, triton, ranger) the practicality is great. But I just wanted something with better on and off road handling and comfort. And yeah they look unreal. Plus I don't need to tow 3 tonne.

For me, auto boxes have reached a point where they're almost pleasant, a far cry from the sluggish and power sapping things we had 10 or 15 years ago. Also much nicer for sitting in traffic and no worrying about a clutch wearing out and costing an arm and a leg to replace.

Manual boxes tend to last as long as the rest of the driveline, autos not so much. Clutch is nowhere near as expensive as repairs or replacement of an auto trans. But, I tend to keep cars for a very long time, and I agree that modern boxes are light years ahead of the old ones. Still prefer a manual though. Especially in a diesel, diesel autos are horrific to my mind.

Not that I'm buying a dual cab ute, but my answer to the auto question is - my partner doesn't enjoy driving a manual, and I wanted us to both be able to drive each other's cars!

I think they’ve ruined a good looking truck! Those bolt on guards to front bumper fit are terrible, I hope it’s because it’s pre production! Nice interior ,I need to commend Mazda for that, I only wish they would adopt the Dmax cup holders. I personally would go the GT over the Thunder. Great review as always, your my go to reviewer, you’re very consistent .I know when I watch your reviews you have the major bases covered. Thanks Paul.

Auto for me partly makes up for the complete impossibly to change from low range to high on the move on this type of electric shift transfer box. Why? Well for pulling away when towing. The torque converter allows it to pull away in high range when towing 3 tons of more up hill. Also it partially hides the lethargy of Euro 5 and 6 engines accelerating from idle

@@andys31337 If only Isuzu/Mazda and all the others dumped their 1960's era part time 4wd which they have further handicapped with electric range change which requires the vehicle to be at a complete stop when changing from low to high. Their 1993 Trooper/Bighorn had a tidy lever to change range and even had synchromesh on the change from low to high. It can be done even with an electrically shiftable transfer case, because the Discovery3 and Range Rover have it. You just accelerate to around 30mph in low range, whip the auto selector into neutral, flick the switch to change range and by the time you move the selector back to D the range has changed to high. The same with the Mercedes GL or GLS as its now called. These also happen to be full time 4wd and both allow an open centre diff in low range for slow speed manoeuvring of large trailers on yards without the wind up. Basically pickup trucks are still in the dark ages and persist in offering a design that should have been consigned to history in the 1990's if not earlier.

Having had a good look at the basic BT50 double cab ute , which was pretty specced up as is, no way would I be paying the extra for this so called Thunder. I'd buy the basic and add any extras in a more discretional and discriminating way than the local Mazda marketing team have done and save thousands. Will likely buy the "Thunder" decal on Ebay!!

i bought a auto because i do approx 10,000kms a month driving, just to many kms for a manual, although, my partner got the manual, so we often change cars to have a change, haha
