Mazzer isn't new to the scene when it comes to coffee grinders, but their highly anticipated hand grinder, the Omega, is a first for the nearly 75 year old company. So with that amount of experience and built in-house from the ground up, expectations from professional and home baristas alike are high. The question is, will it live up to hype?

Funny you mentioned Mazzer's single dose grinder absence. There is one coming I was told in November, specifically focused on home barista market. Looks like a mini ZM grinder, no digi display or anything high tech though, mostly steel and aluminium. Looks very rudimentary but being from the Mazzer I'm sure it will hit the mark for many. Currently in last days of testing with distributor service centers and few select baristi, to provide a final feedback. As for the hand grinder, I'll likely wait for V2, it needs further work, I agree with you on that.

I'm gonna buy a K-Plus soon, just seems nothing can beat it unless it has SOME downside, be that way higher price, or way slower grinding like the C40 - resulting in slightly superior taste though supposedly, but add to that Comandante's current lawsuit nonsense as a downside.... - or something else. I love the magnets on the Omega and the external grind adjustment system, looks great, and it's actually around the price of the K-Plus (I see it for 282 euros vs the 275 I can get the K-Plus at). But it seems it'll still be the K-Plus.

Good that you mentioned a slight issue with 33microns adjustments, the word on the street is they are working on an updated model, fingers crossed. I played with the original proto 18 months ago, which is now been referred to as Omega Old by Mazzer. The one currently available is basically a V2 of the original. That would be 3 product iterations in 2 years, I wish they put some extra focus on it before its actual public product release. Doing R&D this way isn't cheap and I feel like we, the buyers, will be asked to foot the final bill thru its high retail cost. The current price certainly remains a challenge for most, I know the build is superior, materials are all top grade but the world we live in at the moment is in a bit of a squeeze and we all ought to adjust in a way.

Adjustment system is better in the sense that it has number (unlike C40) and only has one circle. But the coarse side seems of little use. On the other hand, almost all clicks on Kplus plus can match some brew method, and it give you more wiggle room to adjust grinding sizer . But I like the aesthetics and design a lot, nowadays many grinders look very generic.

Nice that they threw in their hat. But with 1zpresso and others that are doing amazing things in the hand grinder space for half * the price. Mazzer should put out a legit SD grinder. They have a good platform with the 83mm flat with a number of burr options. Use that, and make a 64mm variant so that all the 64mm options can go in that. Boom, using 2 incredibly popular and widespread platforms to use in their Sd grinder.

I want to look at a side note: You prefer grinding noticeably coarser for the Orea v3 than for V60/conical brewers? That‘s the opposite of my experiences. My grinding range for the Orea (normally for bloom+3 pours) is typically between 19 and 28 clicks with the Comandante or between 570 and 840 microns with a median of 23 clicks/690 microns. Can you share you experience on that?
@Sprometheus
@Sprometheus Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I personally aim for slightly faster brews on the Orea and flat bottoms in general as the shape seems produce less clean cups when it goes past the 3 minute mark. And on cone drippers I generally aim for the same timeframe (2:30-3min), but also they tend to run faster naturally so fining up the grind combats that.
@ndcooper
@ndcooper Жыл бұрын
@@Sprometheus Okay, interesting. With my mentioned grind size and parameters for a 250 ml brew I end up within that timeframe (2:20 - 3:00). Also for my experience the Orea is one of the fastest flat bottoms with barely stalling. On a cone dripper (and Hario or Cafec filters) with three or four pours I would end up with a longer brew time with the same grind setting because it gets a lot slower towards the end. For me in the first place cone shape or flat bottom is a question of the wished outcome (e.g. flat bottom is more balanced, more body, often sweeter vs. more detailed, complexe, more separated flavor notes (bypass effects)).

@Sprometheus
@Sprometheus Жыл бұрын
I have the Chestnut X as well, and I’m inclined to agree with you. It does have far more adjustments, large and small clicks, which gives you a lot more room to dial in. That said, I think handle, ergonomics, and grinding resistance of the Mazzer makes it a bit of a nicer user experience.
@TorstenEnders
@TorstenEnders Жыл бұрын
@@Sprometheus Surely the X is not the perfect grinder, but it’s good enough for me. What’s missing in both grinders - at least for me - is a bent crank handle that’s better supporting ergonomics. But there’s always room for improvement, depending on the usecase. I for example use the X on camping trips and when it’s really cold outside, the grinders get freezing cold as well and it really takes time for the full metal body to loose the cold. I bought the X without the leather sleeve first, but had to add it to the grinder to make my morning coffee routine a little less painful 🥶

The design and material is super attractive; however, the step grind setting is a mag or downside of this grinder. I don’t mind to use step grinder for pour over, but the steps between a pour over (v60) to espresso are too narrow, which indicates that my adjustment from beans to beans is limited. I was struggling to get a mini grinder between Mazzer Omega, Kinu M47 Classic and Lagon Mini. After all, I decide to buy a Kinu M47, it would be a grinder that could serve me decades long.

I've measured the clicks on the Mazzer to be a tad less than 30 μm on my grinder - 102 clicks of total adjustment range correspond to 2.98 mm of vertical travel in the inner burr. I also wonder if the adjustability would improve after full seasoning/running in of the burrs - I'm still only at about 1 kg of coffee through them... and it keeps changing.

@@simkool77 I think that part of the problem is that - unlike with flat burrs, where a vertical movement of the burrs has a fairly direct relationship with the size of the particles exiting - conical burrs profiles are not straight lines, and the distribution of sizes does not change in a linear fashion at all. In other words - "60 μm of movement" on an Omega may well get you a very different result than the same 60 μm on a Comandante (or a 1Zpresso, or a Kinu, or...)

Just for clarity, does "Mazzer reached out to me and gifted me the Omega to use and review" mean the grinder is yours, or that you have to return it after the review? If you now own it, it's not really accurate to say "there is no compensation" when you've been given the grinder in exchange for this review. Edit: Just so I'm clear, not saying it's effected you objectivity. In fact I think you're more than fair in your reviews which is one reason I've watched/enjoyed your channel for years. I'm just curious as to how these things work.

Comandante vertical burr pitch per click is 58 microns(thread pitch is 0.7 mm and 12 clicks per rotation). For red clix it's 29 microns. 30 microns is "target particle resolution per click". It's means nothing actually. Just a lie from comandante advertising booklet.

way too pricey and too bulky. I think there is a reason that the c40 became a standard. I actually don't know for whom this grinder should be? For the traveller not. For the cupping tester neither. And yeah it is italian design...made for italians :) I expect to see a gucci limited version :D
@Sprometheus
@Sprometheus Жыл бұрын
It is pricy, I don’t think it’s bulky though. Especially next to my other hand grinders. But I do agree the Comandate became a Standard for a reason, and it’s because it just tends to hit all the right points at the right price. I do think determining who the grinder is for is up to the buyer. I’m sure it would make a solid travel option, or even a home grinder. I just wish they had made it stepless and it would be an even better competitor in the market.
@vizzo7

@@Sprometheus well the bulkiness i cannot judge 100% but it seems very big. bigger than the c40 or at least space differently distributed. that the mazzer is not covered is also a problem. but the c40 has also not the best solution. the cheap plastic cover seems a planned obsolescence.

Now I'm stupidly asking "why had I never heard of the name Mazzer". It looked elegant and I looked at the price and laughed. Yet another product not for people who aren't dead serious about their coffee to the detail. Of course it has the ability to grind espresso, but if you're investing in an espresso machine and a 300e hand grinder, I'd expect you to be in the customer group that will gladly pay for an automatic grinder. So I'm not sure who's the target group for this exactly. It's like unnecessarily expensive luxury item for people who admire manual labor as better way to do anything.

I was expecting around $200 for a nice, yet absurdly pricy hand grinder... $425 is CRAZY. I felt $50 was too much for the one I got a few years ago. As much as I do like some of the coffee world because there is a lot to be said about it, the constant out the door "gatekeeping" because of outrageous prices does make getting into coffee a hurdle that the average person simply can't overcome when you get into espresso or really good pour overs even.

There's no reason you need to spend this much. Diminishing returns are the norm for everything from $30-$5,000, shoes, and $50-500 grinders. No need to go to the upper end unless you can afford to and want to.
