an ever-growing number of people (specifically people who have an accent similar to the one they use in this goof) have been murdered by police because they were speeding, because they didn't use their turn signal, because they reached into their glovebox for their insurance papers too quickly, etc. the second half of this goof is a dark parody of their dying moments. is the bit funny? a little. is it incredibly morbid and dark? hell yeah. most people don't enjoy laughing at jokes that are about innocent people being murdered.
@ashpotatoes94
@ashpotatoes94 6 жыл бұрын
Well, first this was back in 2010. Second, their accents just sounded like inconsistent 'southern belle' voices, not anything else. Like, I completely understand the point you are making but there was definitely no intent to belittle the plights of poc's interactions with cops.

@crowstrive1426
@crowstrive1426 5 жыл бұрын
@@warren_waters yeah exactly To add onto biggestfanever1's comment I agree that I don't think they were directly intending to make police-caused deaths of poc into a joke, I believe this is just a situation where the joke itself is bad even though the intent behind it is innocent goofs (even if morbid) But it is alright to point out that the joke is bad. We just have to make sure not to jump to conclusions. I.e. we shouldn't think like 'they made a joke that sounded racist > They are bad people' cause thats Very black and white. We have more context than that to see who they are as people, yknow? So I agree I don't think there was ill intent/I don't think they thought about it that hard. Besides, if someone had stopped them there and pointed it out, and they had thought about it, I think they'd come to the conclusion that 'hey... that's not the best goof to make'. Even in the past the McElBoys were smart, even if they got carried away on the goof train and didn't stop to think about it (Edit: fixed a little grammar, it's 1 AM forgive me)

@@em.1633 Um no. There are a million different things that can be funny and this is one of them. Trying to say "you have so many options for jokes. Cant you just not use this one that i especially care about? Thanks." is really silly. Theyve talked about stuff like brutally mutilating horses many times before and no one is over reacting about it as if theyre being serious. Yes jokes can be harmful and they can also not be harmful. Just like trying to stop people from talking about certain topics can be extremely dangerous, but you dont care about any of that do you? Is this joke supposed to be harmful? How exactly? People always try to use "normalizing things" as some kind of excuse to control what other people are aloud to talk about which is bullshit. What exactly is the harm that they are causing? Describe it in detail, dont just assume something bad must be happening as a result of people telling jokes. And no, they havent "grown" or "changed for the better" since then as if to imply that they were bad people before but they fixed themselves so its ok to like them now. If youre really going to judge them like this because you didnt like a stupid joke then youre an asshole. Grow up.

One more shitty take, from me: I felt it was clear that they were acting as if they personally were the people in the interaction with the police, exaggerating their own southern accents for the bit. Not all black americans have a southern accent, y'all. And I felt that the point of going There with it was using humour to draw attention to the ridiculousness and shittiness of overreaction by the police - in the style of Mel Brooks constantly making fun of Nazi's in his comedy - hus philosophy was that if we make the oppressors a punchline, they lose some of their power as a serious subject. There's also a tone in this bit of the idea that 50 year old white man with power is usually the one down-talking (to women, etc.) with pet names, so flipping the script to talk down to that party in that manner is a comic subversion of power dynamics which I really appriciate. I don't feel there's anything in this bit that they should have done differently at the time it was made. Now, yes probably - but to shy away from serious subjects such as police brutality in comedy feeds into fear. Satire is a great way to collectively reduce the power of an oppressor.

ok i'm very much of the opinion that being offensive isn't funny and if that's what all your "humour" is, you just want to be mean and dismiss criticism by calling it a joke but that is not what's happening here. the joke was "wouldn't it be funny if people talked to police officers--who are usually present in serious situations--in a flirtatious way". not "wouldn't it be funny if police terrorized innocent people". i agree that you shouldn't joke at the expense of victims but i don't agree that you can't even reference serious topics.

Say that he knew Chris Hemsworth knew him and started calling him by the same nicknames as his girlfriend. Would it make him uncomfortable because he acknowledges that Chris Hemsworth is beautiful? Im not saying it cant be, it depends, but the person in the question himself said it didnt make him uncomfortable, he said he was afraid his girlfriend might take issue with it. Which is why the bois said he should not ask her to stop. If he had said hey this girl calls me pumkin and i myself am uncomfortable their advice would be different.
