While asking someone how much they make is rude in nearly every situation, the one that Travis mentioned was like the only one where it kind of makes sense. If the new guy made more than him already, you could both confront the manager and get you a raise. If you make about the same, you give the new guy an idea that you just don't get raises here. If the guy makes way less, maybe they're screwing him over. Don't trust your employers, they aren't your friends, and they don't care about screwing you over. Talk about how much you make with your co-workers

Yes yes yes this this this. Always discus your wages. It's not about ego, it's about keeping employers honest and consistent.

That dude at Travis's workplace was in the right to ask about wages. That's the best way to know if you're being ripped off by your employer, either through garden-variety underpaying or actual discrimination. Workers should be united when it comes to demanding fair wages.

Not to dogpile on Travis, but I'm just gonna jump into this pile of dogs real quick and say yeah, Travis, workers talking to each other about their wages is *really important*. I get it. I don't like randos asking me about money outside work - hekk, I don't like people asking me about WORK outside of work, but the idea that you "can't" compare wages/notes with coworkers is ENTIRELY fabricated by business owners to mask their own shenanigans. It's not about manners or ethics. It's about making employees believe that transparency regarding their own paycheck is somehow bad.

You know that the McElboys aren't even remotely close to being baby boomers, right? The youngest of them are in their 50's now, I believe.

this was just one of those things where if someone explained that to them they'd get it but they don't currently. like when Griffin had to learn about the furry community (God I am surprised I made that comparison)

The idea that it's tacky to discuss how much money you make was put forth by companies to keep the power on their end. If employees openly discussed how much they made, it would decrease the bargaining power that companies have.

I think we put too much emphasis on finances. When applying to college I would have to answer how much our household makes and he would get mad and it's like "I literally need this for school, dad". I get not telling how much you make on a public forum, but it really doesn't need to be a secret

God, my aunt and uncle who made a shit ton of money working for Microsoft in the 80s used to have us over to their house with their friends and they'd all sit there complaining about how they didn't have any money. Just for perspective, some of the things they had: a home theatre, a greenhouse dedicated to fancy orchids, a separate garage for their hobby of fixing up vintage cars. Meanwhile, at one point when my mom was between jobs, she had to eat only the apples off the tree in our yard for breakfast and lunch. I remember as a kid even hearing these rich spoiled adults complaining about being "poor" and just knowing that they were idiots who should just stop talking. We actually had to stop accepting invitations to their house because this discussion was so consistent and underhandedly degrading to us.

Definitely (discreetly) ask your coworkers how much they're making, ESPECIALLY if they're at or near the same general rank as you in the company. Otherwise it's just easy for your company to scam you. For interpersonal stuff with friends you just need to know if you can all afford the activities you go our to do together and whatnot. This is very clearly one of their older episodes though so I give em a pass on this one.

I have NEVER understood people getting upset when you ask them how much money they make. Like its no fucking deal? Ask me and I'll tell you. The only reason I wouldn't wanna tell someone how much I make is if it was A TON out of fear of being robbed. So if someone gets upset when I ask them how much they make I always assume theyre fuckin super rich.
