I moved to Union SQ in 1990, was told back then, the Green line was coming. Moved out in 2015, still no Green line, but it's almost under construction! Here we are 32 years after it was first announced and we have this slow train. I love public transit but we are so bad at it.

The lack of fare gates at these new stations is absurd. They chose to forego them because of the new project to update to an entirely new cashless payment system. Bizarre.

The multi use path mentioned around 7:10 or so is on the other part of the GLX project. It'll be an extension of the Somerville Community Path which currently ends at Lowell St. Lowell St is where the Magoun SQ station will be located. The Community Path Extension will go all the way to Lechmere and connect to existing bike paths there. If you look just behind the new Cambridge REI (edit: spotted at 10:10) you'll actually see where the Community Path Extension will end. Some folks have already pirated the trail (it's kinda done already) but GLX construction vehicles and equipment are being stored on the path extension so it won't open until a month or two after the Medford Branch of the GLX project opens. This will be ~~sometime~~ this year if we're lucky. 🙃

Yesterday I managed to ride the new glx and even tho the stations feel a but rushed for their completions the elevated junction makes for a bit a thrilling ride however the fare validation needs to be replaced with fare gates bc I managed to get in the train from both union Square and leachmere without needing to present validation

The long platforms were the first thing I noticed about Lechmere from my ride yesterday. Aside from having to run for your train, I guess they'll come in handy when the "as yet unidentified longer Type 10 trains" arrive. Great video!
@andrew_ray

I seem to remember hearing in a board meeting that Lechmere uniquely was sized to accommodate three type 10 cars in case they ever decide to run triple consists. Other stations on the extension will be sized for two-car type 10 consists. The reason only Lechmere is that long is because it is elevated and therefore would be more difficult to extend later.

Union square branch has a lot of speed restrictions, it should be 20mph at platform to diamond crossing, and 15mph east bound / 10mph west bound at the 5.75% / 6% grade on the flyover junction. Maybe that is the reason for the five minute trip from union square to lechmere.

OH SHIT I forget that's today, I know what I'm doing tomorrow! I do disagree with your union sq score, the validation system is stupid yes, should just be fare gates. You're building a new station from the ground up, why didn't you install gates properly, or tap on the train? But the fact that majority of the wheelchair/ disabled accessibility ( particularly the entrance at 7:25) is teetering on passing by the looks of it, I'd give it a 2/10 Lechmere seems to be a improvement over Union & the old Lechmere, but again why didn't they install gates, you're not remodeling and there's no space, you're building from the ground up. Why didn't you install gates?
@large_bean
@large_bean 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that gates would have been the logical option, but: 1. Tapping on the train isn't a great solution because GLX uses all island platforms, so the doors open on the left while the fareboxes in the open cabs are on the right (and up the stairs, so not accessible), and 2. GLX was designed without gates to work with AFC2.0, which would have made tapping on the train work (readers at all doors). but yes, since AFC2.0 is pretty far away and there is space for gates, especially at USq, they should just put some gates in. Or if they really had to do some kind of validator half-measure, at least use a standalone validator (a la SEPTA Regional Rail) rather than doing the whole complex thing with the FVMs. Heck, if you need a cheap temporary half-measure, even taking a bunch of fareboxes out of buses being retired and lining 'em up in a row would be an improvement - at least it'd avoid bottlenecking riders with the slow process and only two FVMs to use for it
@andrew_ray

Gates were removed to save costs. AFC2.0 was supposed to be done by now. Sometimes things don't work as planned.

Again, Boston & MA as a whole has a habit of not prioritizing key issues when it comes to safety, reliability. Light rail makes absolutely no sense for Boston & it’s metro area They should get rid of a bunch of stops on the B & C lines Ideally, the green line should have a 4 track local-express system in down town Boston similar to the system used in NYCT All trains should be heavy rail & allow bikes Restart the late night bus system as the population as the cities/towns around the City of Boston continue to grow in population & wealth. The rents, construction of new residential construction have shot up around the extension It would save a massive amount of time
