I’m a Canadian, and I have nothing but respect for this man. I knew he was a POW, but I didn’t know that he turned down early release so that others that had been there longer could leave. That’s called being selfless right there. He’s definitely a better man than the one sitting in the Oval Office who as we all know would have never done the same thing if he were in the same situation.

I am not a republican, and differed with John on many issues, yet I am boundlessly grateful for his service to this country and our people, and profoundly saddened for our loss. He was a true Patriot and a man of honor who proudly stood up for what he believed in and was willing to give his life for this country and did by serving it so decisively and with such great devotion. Thank you John. Namaste', may God welcome you home, you leave behind a grateful nation, lightly moistened by my tears.

The full statement by his daughter is probably one of the most moving and poetic statements I've ever heard. As several people have commented, I did not agree with several of his views, but he was a respectful, strong and decent human being whose example should be followed.

Clive, Get a grip on yourself. He was a national hero, and he was a decent man who behaved terribly well as a prisoner. But "Global"? I think you're forgetting that he was shot down while bombing a civilian power plant in a city that was the mirror image of Washington, the capital of a country friendly to one side in a civil war. Most of this globe agree that he was supporting the wrong side. Nevertheless he did his duty as he saw it. OK. At least we can honor him as a good and decent man and one of the country's better politicians.

I didn’t agree with him on everything, but l commend him on the courage he showed as he walked down the aisle to cast his “no” vote on ending healthcare for thousands of Americans. He did that as he was fighting cancer with his own excellent health coverage afforded to members of Congress and as a former member of the military. I also remember him as he spoke up to let the lady know Obama was not a Muslim on the campaign trail. A courtesy not showed by the current politicians against their opponents. A real gentleman. RIP.

I'm very far from conservative, but my respect and admiration for this man of honor and dignity is unsurpassed. I regret I never got to shake his hand and tell him so. I believe John's final contribution was his passing itself. It triggered an outpouring of tributes across the political spectrum which all emphasized the integrity, compassion, and class with which he conducted his duties as a public servant. It's the anxiety medicine and hope the nation desperately needs right now. Thank you John.

I did not like many of his views, but I respected the hell out of him! He was a good man and a true patriot, dignified and an inspiration, and his family SHOULD take comfort in his life. I really like “The Author of All Things“ too! That is beautiful! And wow, what a great statement from Obama. I suppose Trump deserves a miniscule amount of credit for his cookie-cutter response, but maybe not, since he could not very well NOT say anything. John McCain's shadow was more of a man than Donald Trump. The Senator had decency, integrity, honor, and patriotism--all qualities that are deficits for Donald Trump. The fact that the Senator disinvited Trump to his funeral, not wanting his association even in death, makes me respect this great man even more. I'm also happy that Senator McCain was still here to get the good news that Trump's world has begun to crumble. I'm sure it gave him a sense of relief from concern for the country he loved and served so honorably. Condolences to all his family and dear friends.

Trump's name is in the title of the video, his tweet is quoted in the video, so I stand by what I said. I have very mixed feelings about McCain and not a ton of sympathy for him personally, but I do respect how terrible cancer is and how painful it is to lose a loved one. What his daughter wrote was tender, touching, and beautiful. What President Obama wrote was intelligent and stirring. The tweet from the current sitting president was generic, somewhat cold, and could have been copy/pasted from a greeting card. It smells disingenuous and even if I didn't personally care for McCain, I recognize that a sitting president has an obligation to do more than have someone hit ctrl-v on twitter at the loss of a senator and a man generally recognized as a war hero/patriot.
