The Ultimate Forklift Challenge at McCoy's Building Supply is a competition designed to test the safety and operations skills of our certified forklift operators. Each operator had to complete a written test on forklift safety and a timed obstacle course. Deductions from the total score were made if the operator missed any safety practices, spilled water or knocked down any tennis balls off of the cones. Contestants were the top 10 finalists from all over the McCoy States of America.

I was an operator for about 6 years and can whole heartedly say it is what created my work ethic and passion in logistics (now a freight broker) however I would absolutely love to compete in something like this in Kansas or Missouri. (Ended up getting out of labor as I have had bilateral knee surgery and it was too dangerous/painful) Standup or Sitdown I have used essentially all attachments and types of lifts, even working with radio shuttles in 25 deep bays in blast freezers (quite the experience). Last truck I unloaded and timed myself only took me 7 minutes (Double pallet Jack however all pallets were over 102-106" tallx22) so it was kind of cheating, if we are talking about a sit down with quad forks (Single-Double handler) I can and have easily unloaded 22 pallet truckloads in under 10 minutes.

I just started learning how to drive a forklift. I am nervous as hell when currently learning how to maneuver around tight isles with multiple pallets. Watching this video inspires me to hone my skills day in and day out, to where hopefully one day I can get as good as these guys. Luckily for me, I work with a great bunch of guys, who are patiently teaching me the trade, and working with me to get me to that comfort level.

Generally we are force to deal with corporates college educated idiots decision. So of we need an inch? We force it. In time you will be one with your machines. Us old boys can hear your skill from a distance without sight? And we know your experience within seconds of your approach to the machine and where your hands and feet go Immediately. Ince you master a standard "Front Load". Learn every "Reach" you can. They are either unimaginable crap or amazing machines.

The first lesson I teach any green horn is to try an lift a pallet off the ground well beyond the forklifts capabilities. Once they have tried, I ask them to try and steer? Safety lesson number 1... The horn does not matter if you can't lift what your machine is not able to do. No training or lessons can show or tell you how to learn common sense. New Zealand and Australia is loosing common sense with safety regulations, and are causing more harm creating a pressure cooker job that should not be one. Forklifts are an experience that is subconscious. You don't know how mentally drained you are until you stop. Even the best of the best have admitted mental fatigue after the fact.

Was working in a carbon factory where we had to empty a hot mass in to diffrent seize molds, if was to slow the mass would go cold and stuck, and then had to jackhammer it out, or the operater if he was smart just open the hatch and dump it on the floor, was alot easier to clean it that way, any way you had to go almost full speed all time, it was alot of damage all around, i once hit a solid beam holding the cooling system, jacked it up from the ground, was night shift and i thought i had passed the last beam took the turn alittle to fast, damn did i kiss the front window.

OSHA said the rules for driving a forklift must to be no more than a normal person walking. if any warehouse is driving faster they don't follow the rules of OSHA... Reality is 99% of the forklift drivers drive to fast, very fast, because the jobs requires to do.

Having been operating for 20 years, this is achievable, given adequate time to acclimate to the behaviour of the machine, every machine is different, which is why we like to stick to the same machine everyday, yes we can operate every machine, but maybe not as efficiently as our machine

When I managed a freight terminal several years ago I used one of the local temp agencies to send me lift drivers occasionally and the guy I dealt with would call and say he had a guy for me that was certified on this and that and I always told him I didn't care one bit about certificates because all that says is someone went through a class somewhere and got a piece of paper. I told him I would know just how certified they are when I see what the person does with their feet when they sit on the lift because if the person only uses one foot to drive the lift we are probably going to have a problem.. Always use two feet and to hell with putting on that stupid seatbelt..

I can pick a dime up with a fork lift. I worked at a factory that we had to feed machines and unload conveyors go outside and get product and also take finished parts that was boxed to a wrapping maching and get off and wrap the double stacked boxes of tv and then take it to the back warehouse and find a row to put it and go do it all over again in a certain time. Load a line then unload the other line while doing all the other stuff in between. Always against the clock all day long. I was so good. We had to fly around the factory with unbalanced loads and also we loaded trucks in between parts. Very few could keep up without the line going down because we never got all that done in a few min to make it back to the conveyer to load it again with unpainted tv parts. Do all that again and make it back before the line ran out of parts. One mishap and you was behind for a few hours.
