McDonald's is an American hamburger and fast-food restaurant chain. It was founded in 1940 as a barbecue restaurant operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald, in San Bernardino, California. In 1948, they reorganized their business as a hamburger stand, using production line principles. The first McDonald's franchise using the arches logo opened in Phoenix, Arizona in 1953. Businessman Ray Kroc joined the company as a franchise agent in 1955 and subsequently purchased the chain from the McDonald brothers.
Today, McDonald's is the world's largest restaurant chain, serving approximately 68 million customers daily in 120 countries across approximately 36,900 outlets. McDonald's primarily sells hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken products, french fries, breakfast items, soft drinks, milkshakes, wraps, and desserts. In response to changing consumer tastes, the company has expanded its menu to include salads, fish, wraps, smoothies, and fruit. A McDonald's restaurant is operated by either a franchisee, an affiliate, or the corporation itself. The McDonald's Corporation revenues come from the rent, royalties, and fees paid by the franchisees, as well as sales in company-operated restaurants.

You skipped the part where he (Ray) promised them royalties on a handshake deal and never followed through and he didn't let them keep managing their own joint and forced them to change their name and go out of business essentially.

@@completelywitless9593 That's right, no can because it never happened. The brothers and their heirs never made this claim and the brothers famously wanted everything in writing. They would have never dropped their guard for the most important transaction in their lives.The ones who violated a handshake deal were the brothers. They agreed that the original San Bernardino store was part of the $2.7 million sale price and then went back on that.

I am thinking about a new type of restaurants: eating-spots in eating-spots, food keeps changing, chefs also rotate this is opposed to current restaurants, thanks to this rotation of food and chefs, eating-spots are more powerful than restaurants, along with that, there is an app, people vote for the food that will be cooked in the next days menu is influenced by the live input of the people via an app

It wasn't Ray Kroc's idea to buy the land and lease it to the franchisees - it was his partner Harry Sonneborn. He was the person who first said that McDonald's was "a real estate company that just happened to sell hamburgers"

Believe it or not, no part of the video is based on the Founder. Instead, I read the sources the movie directors used to make the movie, and that's how I sifted through fact and fiction. But yeah, surprise, surprise, a video and a movie based on the same story are gonna be similar. Go figure.

Good points can be made on the hardships the company faced in it´s formative years, the political economics surrounding a centuries old Cuban company, the process of Rum making itself, and the Spirit industry as a whole today as affected by Bacardi. I think it'd be interesting to do these videos is two parts. 1st part will be mostly like this one: brief historical overview. Then a part 2: explaining how they make money. I would have love to see more about the real estate as a business model method that McDonald's operates under.

I think it would have been even more interesting if you could have mentioned how it expanded globally. I am a food scientist and have worked for OSI Group, which is a private company in Chicago. OSI grew alongside McDonald’s since they were providing most products as it grew, which is why the McDonald’s HQ is in Chicago.

the only reason there are more Subways than any other chain is because they will let ANYONE open one. if you want a McDonald's franchise you need to have a LOT of money and restaurant experience They also won't open McDonald's that will steal an existing business. opening a McDonald's is a great investment

Subways are cheaper to start because aside from warming ovens, Subway doesn't need cooks. All their ingredients are prepacked. Sandwiches are just assembled.

This was a very interesting watch having seen The Founder recently. In the movie he's portrayed as kind of a shady but clever businessman that 'ran of' with the founder's money so to say. This video mentioned several key things thought up by the 'shady businessman' that are what McDonalds is known for today (Ronald McDonald, Happy meal's etc. Good video.

Business Casual i just noticed that in the map.... not from 2017 but the latest we can find? are you kidding me? im romanian and i used to have my birthdays as a young child at mcdonalds! i still ha e vivid memories of happy meals with SPACE JAM TOYS! that was in the 90s! EARLY 90! since i can remember there have been mcdonalds at EVERY STREET CORNER in Romania. That map isnt just old, it must be from 1990 or even earlier!

Watching the movie made me appreciate how the brothers focused on quality. It's as if they mixed In N Out with Chick Filla. Also the same way they were so willing to switch to powdered ice cream, makes me wonder when did they switch to this fake meat they serve.

Great video but I can't cover up my concern: it seems like you were cutting this video short. E.g. you may hav mentioned, which countries were the first "adopters" of McDonalds (aside of that one picture), or that when did Croc died.

Yeah, I get where you're coming from. Ultimately we decided to cut off that part since it was more or less along the lines of "and then they added this product". There's a very narrow balance we must strike between maintaining enough detail and not harming audience retention (the bread and butter of the KZfaq algorithm).

Just think of it, although McDonalds was established by some McDonalds brothers around 1950, it was really their order of 8 milk shake machines, that caught the attention of the salesman of those machines, Mr. Croc, and it’s through some kind of a franchise and landlord situation of the ground beneath those restaurants, that changed McDonalds into a worldwide success.

Nobody put a gun to their heads and said their signatures or their brains would end up on the sales agreement. Reality is they made what today is worth $20 million for a less than 100 store operation at the time. They did well.

At the time though he thought the price he paid for it was too much. I do think it seems like he did most of the work to allow it to expand as well, but I do think the two founders should have at least gotten a small percentage. The thing is Ray was constantly having to get their approval and wanted to buy them out fast.

By any conventional measure he paid way too much. Several times too much. Ray knew that MCD would soon enter a period of hyper-growth and Turner explained better to pay way too much now than way way, way more just a few years later. Plus he had a limited time contract, the brothers could have just not renewed it. Had they just taken the 1% not the upfront Ray probably would have made the deal based on his later deals.

Another fantastic video. I also just recently watched The Founder, which was definitely a good movie, but also took a few artistic liberties with facts. Your video here I think stays more factual, but also covers a larger timespan, and therefore includes things outside the purview of the movie. Regardless, it's very interesting and very well done. can someone care enough to explain to me why Ray Croc is able to keep most of the profits if he buys the land and leases back? isnt the sales of burger still going back to the MCD brothers ? Croc is only collecting the rent right?
