I personally love the IAE V2500 on the md-90, but you can't beat the classics. Therefore I choose JT8D

JT8D all the way. Louder & has thunderous bass during take off. You can feel it

I made a video during takeoff at DFW when I was flying in the MD-80. Pretty awesome sitting next to the power plants. Wife hated it haha

Where I used to live in the 90s, approx 10 miles from Hartsfield in ATL area, I much preferred the MD-90 as they flew over my house!

I’ve worked on the MD-88’s. Great airplane. Starting to show their age though.

The MD-90 with its high-bypass engines has a smooth thunderous roar while the MD-80 with its low-bypass engine has a much harsher and raspier sound.

I've noticed that the round cone on md 80 engine doesn't move on md 90 it does

I assume you are talking about the engine spinner. The JT8D is a low-bypass engine. Before the first stage fan there is a inlet guide vane section. The cone (Intake Bullet) doesn't move. On the V-2500 the spinner moves with the fan because it doesn't have a inlet guide vanes and it is directly connected.

And for the unintelligent: The top of the MD-90's tail is flat, while the MD-80s' aren't.

+Monica Miyake (PenguinvilleRescue1) That's what you chose to point out? How about the high bypass turbofans instead of low bypass ones? Even the uninitiated can tell a fat engine from a skinny one. If your going to act intelligent then don't start calling people names out of nowhere.

MD-88 sounds hideous... But MD-90 is awesome. So 90 is my vote.

Don't really understand the comparison actually. Besides just sound there's nothing you can tell from watching a pair of aircraft takeoff. For starters same day? Same altitude? Same humidity? Same temp and barometric pressure? Then there is load factors, same overall weight, passengers, fuel, baggage, cargo ever this determines throttle settings, IE what percentage of 100% to set for takeoff power, they don't ever use 100% especially with modern engines too wasteful all the way around but especially in .fuel burn. The lower you can set throttles to achieve takeoff and climb the better as even a percentage point would save the airlines into the hundreds of thousands if not millions per year in fuel costs. Unless you know these things it's just watching two aircraft, might as well be a DC 10 and MD 80 take off...
