The McDonnell F2H Banshee manufactured by McDonnell Aircraft is an American single-seat carrier-based jet fighter aircraft developed from the McDonnell FH Phantom. The F2H Banshee was one of the primary American fighters used during the Korean War and was the only jet-powered fighter ever deployed by the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1949, the F2H Banshee set a jet altitude record of 52,000 feet. Because of its good performance at high altitude the F2H Banshee initially proved its worth as an escort for long-range USAF bomber formations. The maiden flight of the F2H Banshee took place on the 11th of January 1947 and it went into service on August 1948. Primary users were the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps and the Royal Canadian Navy. There were approx. 895 F2H Banshee produced. The last series of Banshee retired on the 12th of September 1962 to the Royal Canadian Navy.

Probably one of the first model airplanes I ever had, in the late 60's. At 8 years old I thought the F9F and the Banshee were the same aircraft, my eye for aircraft identification is a little better now lol

Those wings look like they came straight off a P51 Mustang. Almost have a forward sweep.

Saw a F2H at McConnell AFB in 1960; pretty ship; but woefully underpowered.

Yeah you can thank Westinghouse and their pitiful jet engines for that one 👎🏼

Most early jets were underpowered. More than a few people would say that all aircraft before the J-79 were under powered. Others would say all turbojets were underpowered.

Those Westinghouse jet engines were duds , its a shame the Banshee didnt get a pair of Nenes. Beautiful jet for the time period besides the straight wings.

Westinghouse devoted neither the manpower, space, money, nor expertise needed for such a radical new product. Management's lack of vision doomed the air turbine division.

@@hertzair1186 Sorry but you can not add... 1947 is 3 years after 1944, which is when the Me-262 entered service. and the 262 did not have swept back wings. It had a slight sweep to its leading edge for stability issues. Not for reducing the transonic effects on the aircraft... Its next version would have had fully swept wings, but it was never built... and the F2H Banshee was developed and brought into service within 3 years of the Me-262 and had a higher top speed, longer range, and its engines had a lifespan of 100 times that of the junkers Jumo 004s on the Me-262. Plus it could operate from an aircraft carrier which meant it was built much more solidly than the 262. The collapsing nose gear issue on the German jet quickly proves that.
