This is one of McFarlane Toys' largest figures and it's one of his own creations. Will that compel the company to make it an impressive collection piece or just another half-baked action figure with bad articulation?

I think overall a balance of aesthetic and articulation are what I look for in a figure. Those standards change depending on the character, so someone agile like Spider-Man I expect to be fairly poseable but a bigger character can get away with less.

100% agreed, I buy figures cause I want to play around with them, not nearly as much fun just having a mostly frozen in place statue where turning a head or arm totally ruins the established pose like their earlier stuff regularly did.

I think McFarlane is killing it lately. He’s really thrown his hat in the ring of super-articulated action figure makers and has made his mark. Violator is one of the best releases last year and he usually delivers a solid product. I just wish he had some of the old licenses he’s made over the years like Ozzy and Metal Gear.

I like what mcfarlane is doing mostly when it comes to sculpt, but I think he should call his figures super action statues or something. His figures consistently disappoint me when it comes to articulation, to the point where I just don’t buy them if I’m not gonna be in the mood to customize them and make my own cuts. I think if mcfarlane just listened to what people wanted and applied it to his figures he’d be untouchable: give them more ab crunch and give them thigh swivel for godsakes, and stop that weird shyt with the ankles where the ratchet stops giving most of his figures balancing issues. The most frustrating part of mcfarlane toys is it seems like they are the only company that doesn’t care what people want him to change about their figures. I bought that Kickstarter spawn and though it looked good the articulation was wack

With the exception of customizing my figures, I agree 100 with this comment, specially the part that Mcfarlane doesn’t care, or this issue it’s not on his top list of thing to improve.

I don't know about ab crunch, I can't bend my torso forward a whole lot, I think the ankles are the weak spot and sometimes ab crunch backwards Try it in front of the mirror with your body turned sideways, try to bend your mid torso forward, after failing, try to bend your waist, you can do a bit more, if you pay attention and realize you're using your hips/legs, you'll see it's not that much either

Also make them six inch scale. I stopped buying them because they don't scale with anything so they look off next to any of my figures unless i pose them and pull off some camera tricks.

I’m with you on skipping figures I don’t have the patience to articulate myself. The most frustrating aspect of the articulation is that it’s all there, he just over-sculpts everything so much that the plastic gets in the way. Case in point the over-sculpted butt. All his figures have that and it’s the only thing preventing the thigh swivel that’s kind of their from working properly. Plus the asses are already covered by the diaper thing he uses so the ass can’t even be seen so what’s the point? It serves no purpose other than limiting articulation for no reason. Also if he used less plastic inside the torso you could easily get a good ab crunch on literally every single one of his figures. I made a custom Superman out of the bizarro figure and it has full ab crunch without effecting the sculpt at all.

100% agree with you, proper balance of aesthetic and articulation. No point having and "action" figure that barely moves. Overall the new McFalrane figures are weird(mainly the DC Multiverse ones), sculpts are generally good, but the articulation is problematic, and some of the articulation points make the figures look ugly(like the weird hollowed out double jointed elbows).Honestly thought of buying some DC figures from this line, but thanks to your videos, I've saved a LOT of money.

I have 47 DC Mcfarlane toys, and I think that most of them have decent articulation. The ones that do not have decent articulation, such as King Shazam and Demon Knights Etrigan, compensate for this issue with amazing sculpts. At the very least, these figures look great in the standard museum pose.

I feel like McFarlane is striking a good balance right now of sculpt paint and articulation. Not every figure works but I do appreciate they are always trying new things. When it clicks like it did with this figure I feel like it really works. I had this violator figure for a while and I bloody love it!!! Only problem I have with mine is that the knees are a bit lose so I always have him in a crouching pose. Go back to the golden age of McF from 2001-2007. They are way to inconsistent with the articulation for it to be impactful in any way other than taking budget away from paint and sculpt. There's no reason for the hand-sculpted likeness of the 2000s to be so much better than the 3-D rendered ones we have now but they simply are in every way.

I don't collect McFarlane for a few reasons. 7" scale, no guns for DC, and their articulation is poorly executed on many figures. That said, I respect the heck out of McFarlane and I really hope they improve and succeed. I really hope they figure it out because their sculpt and paint blows other companies out of the water at this price point. I'm getting away from things like Marvel Legends because I'm getting tired of their base body repaints. Articulation is more important than sculpting for me, but you still need some sculpting. You can't just paint Bucky Cap again and slap on a new head. Figures like this are infinitely more interesting looking. I really hope they nail it and I hope they create a line that I'd want to collect.

Honestly, I hate articulation. Mcfarlane's older figures were the best mass market figures ever. He should go back to that with everything he does. I know I'm in the minority with that opinion but that's how I feel. Seeing an amazingly sculpted figure with ugly articulation all over it (by ugly I mean any and all articulation, there's no such thing as good looking articulation) is like seeing a sculpture in a museum, appreciating the beauty and craftsmanship of it, then thinking you know how to make it better and taking a hacksaw to it. That's all I can think when I see or hear anyone talking about wanting articulation or more articulation, just a whole bunch of how can we destroy the artwork more and more.

Honestly I mainly just wish McFarlane would be less wishy-washy. For a company that has a universal articulation system, the way in which it's implemented is weirdly different from figure to figure. It's like they constantly take one step forward only to take two steps back. One thing's for sure though. If they insist on having ratcheted ankles they need to increase the number of ratchets so that the figure can actually stand properly.
@meneliktafari894
@meneliktafari894 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I think McFarlane has made progress in regards to the DC Multiverse, however his figures just aren’t pleasing to me as it relates to articulation. Further, poor mobility in the abdomen, and ratchet joints, not to mention thigh cuts which barely function impedes the lines potential. Notwithstanding, some of his releases are aesthetically pleasing, I think he should just stick with sculpting statues…. Moreover, I think he’s a good guy with a true passion for the craft, which is the main reason I support him. Good review, and great Question
@TheDARKNESS8030

I just think mcfarlane needs to do a better job of implementing they wrist and ankle joints. The actual joint is fine. They just need to size it better to the figure or push it in more to hide it. Other than that I think their doing a fantastic job. They also need to get a new head sculpter for live action figures.

When it was announced that McFarlane got the license for D.C. I made fun of the prospect of McFarlane D.C. "action figures." Todd's been makin' me eat crow ever since. lmao I'm glad to see his company put so much effort into their lines. There's bumps here and there but for the detail, price point, and availability on retail shelves, McFarlane's producing some of the best domestic product out there imo. I never meant to start collecting heaps of 7 inch figures but McFarlane's Multiverse and Mortal Kombat lines had me changing tunes quick. Even stuff like his wacky monsters and oddly detailed Avatar lines look brilliant; Their work compels me to invest in series' I didn't think I'd have any interest in buying figures for. This is an instance I'm happy to be corrected. Hope he continues to continue with what he's offering now with the odd staction figure here and there. The Year Two Batman also offers an interesting prospect at being the best of both worlds so maybe we'll see more of that down the line.

Really at this juncture my criticism of McFarlane is they just don't fit well in my 6.5", ML dominant display. The large, especially monstrous characters though are usually great. Ignoring the articulation snafus, McFarlane is making the type of figures I'd like to see, lots of unique sculpt, decent enough paint, the base line high articulation. The 2 figures I've kept on my desk all year have been the Modular Iron Man and Todd's Batman. Really hoping for a new Medieval Spawn this year.
@tomtudorweaver1078
@tomtudorweaver1078 2 жыл бұрын
I agree about the balance idea when it comes to McFarlane figures. I feel they've done a better job recently with bigger figures that have inherently more restricted articulation due to their designs being really interesting, some of their regular DC figures are incredible but others really suffer from poorly executed articulation. Two great examples are their Last Knight on Earth Batman, where there's an awful looking cut in the sculpt to allow for ankle range which isn't even that good, but then something like their Suicide Squad Polka-Dot Man has nice looking sculpt that completely covers the ankle joint allowing for basically no range, so he's near impossible to stand without well, a stand. I think it depends with the design how well the figure turns out, something like Violator is super detailed which looks awesome, the appeal is the look rather than the poseability, then something like their DC Multiverse White Knight figures that go for a comic art accurate look work really well because of the simplistic designs allowing for more articulation, that White Knight Joker is a lot of fun to pose. Some of their DC figures to me blow Marvel Legends out of the water in terms of what you get for the price. All I know is what they're making now is way better than when they started doing those 7 inch Walking Dead figures that were statues with a couple cuts, those things felt like they came out 10 years too late.

Zup Anthony, I think Mcfarlane toys should keep on making more and better articulation “action figures”, instead of what they been doing, although I think they make the best detail af , they r amongst the worst if not D worst articulation ones. I know that I might be asking too much, because of the price point, but even their “exclusive/limited” most recent release was very expensive with meager articulation. This time I can't agree with your evaluation of 9 for articulation it's at best a 6 since the head can't move, the chest can only rotate and the legs can't move forward. You said it yourself the articulation problems aren't related to price point but to bad engineering. This isn't a company releasing their first action figure, we can't be lenient towards bad decisions from experienced companies. That was my objective opinion, now for my subjective opinion... I would've preferred a classic look for Violator with the thin arms, the thin long legs and very small torso. This is a nice looking action figure but it's not the Violator I wanted, I want one with the classic look to display with my classic Spawn. Thanks for the review Anthony.

To be honest I'm all about how they look on the shelf so I take sculpt over articulation everytime

Their statues were pretty great, but I like the route they’re going. The repaints and the bloody or unmasked variants.. Just seems a bit lazy to me. I’d be happy if they spaced these things out and focused on getting out newer characters instead. Or included the unmasked head sculpt as an accessory.

It annoys me that this figure is supposed to be of The Violator. All representations of Violator show him to be very skinny despite is overwhelming strength. If anything this should be his brother; The Vandalizer.

I do not these chicken leg designs on characters that are made into action figures in general, once they become loose the figure will never stand.

I like what Mcfarlane does, the double jointed elbows became really solid with time, they don't hit the spot always, but for the price is my favorite line Edit: Steppenwolf could be better, that's common sense, you can't pose that thing

whoever thought of giving this figure that regular stand must be the same person that came up with that Spider-Ham Marvel Legends "figure".
