Ron from www.newrecordday.com reviews the McIntosh C52 Preamplifier. My time with the C52 has solidified one undeniable truth and that is the fact that American hifi wouldn’t be the same without McIntosh. Bottom line: Does the C52 bring its own coloration or sound to the party? Does McIntosh have its “own” sound and if so, did I hear that signature sound with all 3 amps? Ya know what, maybe it’s placebo but I believe I do hear something special here… Big, bold, rich and powerful all come to mind and I’ll tell you folks, when using other preamps with the same amplifiers we just walked through, I don’t get this tone which lands me on this conclusion. If there is a sound that should be noted in the history books of what American hifi is supposed to sound like… this should be first in line.

Oh those beautiful blue lights and needles! I think that after seeing and hearing a McIntosh system in a hi-fi store in the 90's, it lead me down the audiophile road - I guess I can blame them. Thank you for another great review. I would really like a review of the various turntables you have had in you system. That VPI looks gorgeous!

I can't afford any of this stuff. My grandfather has a McIntosh set from the '70s I assume, a MR500 Fm Tuner, C32 PreAmp, and A MC7270 plugged into 2 Klipsch Chorus II Floorstanding speakers. It is in absolute mint condition because he is a simple and clean man, living in the same house for 70 years. Well anyway I subscribed to your channel because I did have the luxury of listening to some Adam Audio Beta speakers from there Tenor Series at a CEDIA expo a few years back and was so blown away that now I try and feed my dreams of having a great system by day dreaming with videos like this on youtube. Great upload. I believe myself to be an audiophile just never had the means to be able to purchase the equipment. All I have is a pair of AKG k553 pro headphones with a Fiio headphone amp. Keep up the great videos, If ever I become able to afford a great sound system, you better believe I'll be stalking you on youtube for advice. lol

I've heard those Adam audio Tensor speakers too. Very impressive. Unfortunately they don't have them in the US anymore, I used to be a dealer for them. I think it's just the Classic series now. The Classic Column MKIII will get you a lot of SQ though, for a lot less money.

McIntosh is one of those brands that polarises the audiophile community, you either love it or hate it. While most people consider it flashy and over engineered, just like you, I consider them to be quintessentially American. And yes, they do have a house sound and I'd use the exact words that you have, big and bold with very textured and detailed midrange. My "vintage" MC7150 is still the amp I'd choose compared to most contemporary offerings. McIntosh embody what a preamplifier really ought to be, a receiving station for all components. And most importantly, they don't skimp! Excellent review as always Ron, thanks for putting this up!

Excellent job as usual Ron. I had a Mcintosh item on loan 7 years ago which wasn't good, but I have heard some stuff at a dealer that sounded good. I would love to one day have the opportunity or maybe you have of having some stuff like a C52 and their heavy weight power amps and listen to them vs some Audio Research stuff. If you could one day do this high-end McIntosh and high-end Audio Research and give your impression as only you can, it would be great. Thanks for this and the headphone reviews were great.

I am running a C712 (refurbished by McIntosh in 2017) into the MEN220 DSP/Room Correction system, and then into an MC152. This is more a comment on equalization, but I have been absolutely pleased with the MEN220 - sound improvement is stupefying. I can’t imagine that I could dial that in on my own. Obviously, with the simple pre-amp, I’ve given up the DAC and Phono functionality, which is a lot. But appreciate the question still remains as to the pre-amp itself & how you like one vs the other - mostly a plug for the MEN220 if you are looking for room correction and decide on a preamp without equalization. Enjoy!

Thank you for another great review. I'm just curious, I bought the Lounge phono preamp after your review and I'm very happy with it, does the built-in phono stage of the MC 25 outperform the Lounge? Granted it's only a $300 phono stage I'm just curious if listening to something built in of Mcintosh quality would I hear a significant difference?
@Newrecordday2013
@Newrecordday2013 8 жыл бұрын
+ktrixterx oooooh, thats a good question but in all honesty, its a different tone. To my ears, the Lounge is more forgiving on top and offers a deeper look into the soundstage. The McIntosh is more midrange forward and rock and roll.

Interesting video. Everyone has a right to like or not like a product, but some of the comments posted are totally lame. Putting the reviewer down for talking to much, using a car analogy, not playing enough music (like you could tell the difference through a computer), being biased, slamming the McIntosh brand (probably because you can't afford one) for being too expensive, not detailed enough, over priced, etc...If you've actually own/owned Mac gear and you have something meaningful to share so be it, but for the haters...give us a break and get a life!

Beautiful as usual but disappointingly impractical. The main gripe must be that it is difficult to see what the volume and equalisation controls are set to at a glance. Would be ok if you could tie eq settings individually to each input. Not heard the equipment and I am sure it is superb - just a pity that more attention was not paid to usability.

You are an eloquent reviewer, watching your reviews is a treat for both the mind and the ears, but I must vehemently disagree with you as regards McIntosh. I've been an audiophile almost 40 years and listened to this unit with the MC302 power amp and a pair of exceptional Focal Stella Utopia EM speakers at a local audio dealer and when compared head to head with the Audio Research LS28 and GS150 power amp the difference was stunning! With the exception of McIntosh's 1960s tube gear I've found all of their components to sound diffuse, veiled and unexciting at best. It pains me to have this opinion because I have always found that Mac gear is strikingly beautiful and build like an Abraham's tank. Honestly, one can do MUCH better sonically for less than 1/2 the money. Although I am a big Audio Research fanboy, alas I can't justify a $50,000 investment. That said, my "budget" Peachtree Nova 220SE driving my decidedly mid-fi B&W DM603 S3s sound more transparent, detailed and punchy in my living room than the Mac setup (mind you, under perfect audio showroom conditions) at literally 1/20th of the price! In fairness, I did not hear what you heard so I won't call you wrong, but I've never heard anything approaching the high end out of McIntosh gear. Thanks for your hard work and your wordsmanship.

Thanks man! It would have been interesting to see where I would have landed with the same gear you mentioned; in the same room, with the same music. As we both know, all those things matter. It's all about the sound signature you want, like, want to cultivate etc. The McIntosh sound is an iconic signature that does not suit all ears or speakers. The joy is in the listening, in the music we love most and want rendered just so. I'm a McIntosh guy from the mud-60's. I love the warmth, clarity, expansive sound stage. But above all I love my music, orchestras, chamber groups, singers, operas. Vive la difference!

Hey, since you are a "Mac Guy", can I trouble you for some McIntosh buying advice? I am considering a C32 Preamp. I know this goes back to the 70s, but in the year 2017 (!!) do you feel it still holds up sonically, or is this more of a darker, veiled piece that doesn't offer true high-end sound? Thank you to all that reply! :)

+olaniyi570 Its fine! I actually agree the first 5 minutes are pretty boring but I had to do it, I put an annotation that will now skip to the listening impressions! All good man...

+district5rookie No, it's pronounced "macintosh". I've never heard someone pronounce it "mickintosh", including the company's president.

You say "strike of the stick hitting the cymbal head..." when describing the preamp's reproduction of transients. I am guessing you mean the bell of the cymbal?

Almost as cheap as hiring all these bands to play one by one in your living room, including paying Jesus to raise all the dead musicians from the dead.

jesus Christ. "colored" solid state amps? if that's the case they must be malfunctioning! oh wait, you people would never admit you couldn't tell the difference between your ridiculously overpriced amps to something that costs 1/10 of the price.

I prefer classic McIntosh amplifiers that are still considered “state of the art”. They will sound the same as these newer McIntosh... IMO. But I don’t intend to take these peoples religion from them. If an amplifier is colored, then something is wrong. Frank McIntosh or Gordon Gow would never say something so nebulous!

I'm sure this thing great technically and sounds great, but damn it's ugly. That cheap looking digital display mixed with the retro control knobs. it's a mix matched collection of different eras that should never go together.
