You guys should make videos on which of your breeds is best for certain category's like self sustainability, foraging, egg laying etc. it would be very helpful in choosing breeds and I am sure everyone would enjoy it

Nice video. Good to see you doing more videos. You should do a series of breed specific videos. showing them at hatch, as pullets and as adults. Tell us their history and uses and traits etc. It would be an invaluable resource going forward and will direct more buyers to your hatchery!

Hi, I ordered 25 chicks last year from you and I was, and still am, very pleased. I ordered AMERACAUNAS, TRUE BLUE WHITINGS, TRUE GREEN WHITINGS ,and SILVER SPANGLED HAMBURGS. I am SO happy with the WHITINGS!!! BLUE and GREEN eggs everyday!!! Plus the little Hamburg 's white egg. It's so exciting to open my nest box top and see all the colorful eggs!!! I'm still a kid with the colored eggs. I named most of my birds and they truly know their names-- some actually come running to me when I call out their name!!! And several of the "special" ones will kumpnup on my lap as I'm sitting there. Such joy they have brought to my life. All except the 1 mean Rooster! The other 2 are fine, 1 is even friendly to me and a great leader! 👍 THANK YOU MURRAY MCMURRAY!!

Thanks for sharing! I look forward to receiving our first order of chicks for this year next week🐣. I have ordered chicks from Murray McMurray for a lot of years now and always soo happy! Now that I am married with a toddler we sit down as a family and look through the magazine and then I spend hours online thinking and planning for the next 5 years. My controlling side does choose the majority of what we order but I get a few for my son and husband lol you never know I might find something new I like and it become a regular in our flock. This year i'm going back to some breeds I know I like and also trying some new to see how they are free range and with egg production. We have all our chickens on pasture starting last year and eventually we will get a guardian dog. This year we are building a large hen house and going to plant fruit trees in the field. We provide eggs for our families and friends so we are working on really increasing our flock🐔 since we are always out of eggs with a list of people wanting eggs. We are also switching from brown egg layers to colorful eggs...Actually my husband requested that while looking at your magazine ❤ our current flock is mostly blue laced red wyandottes, silver penciled rocks and partridge rocks. We have some old ladies around that mostly are in charge of garden clean up but still occasionally lay some eggs. We have a huge problem with ravens stealing our eggs every day 😫 i'm looking into nest boxes that the eggs roll out of the stealing zone. We have tried bird scare tape, etc... nothing seems to keep them away and it's really frustrating losing a dozen eggs per day if your not home gathering eggs throughout the day. Thank you for your videos and your beautiful catalog❤ can't wait for our chicks to arrive 🐥

@laurenandreas5950
@laurenandreas5950 4 жыл бұрын
yLeprechaun ...I’ve had buff Orpingtons and they are a sweet bird. For some reason they weren’t the hardiest though..I think the wild birds that came into the yard brought some bird virus in or something so we lost them. We now have feeders that we fill and the chickens step on the panel and the feed is exposed so the chicken feed isn’t ever on the ground for the entire wild bird population to feed on. We put coops in my ‘secret garden’ area so they have a fenced garden with trees, grass, rosemary, roses and lots of shade. Every evening the trees were loaded with wild birds waiting for me to leave and they ate here & slept in the trees. After we added the feeders we only have a few doves come in looking for spillage. I.loved my Orpingtons. I did lots of research on chickens before I got them and no one said to get feeders that won’t draw in the wild populations that will eat everything and poop everywhere! We wanted a ‘free range with grass’ for them so we didn’t want a pen with a cover, that looks cruel to us. Chickens need grass and if they aren’t in a confined area they don’t kill it like if confined in a pen.
@yLeprechaun
@yLeprechaun 4 жыл бұрын
@@laurenandreas5950, hmmm that is weird. They billed as a cold weather layer, so I assumed they would be hardy. I guess I never really paid attention to how theyvdid in comparison to others in the Winter. Maybe your onto something with the wild population. We have lots of feeders around for the wild population cause I like to see them to. I think the black oils we provide for them might help keep them from competing with the chooks. I have to agree with you about free range. We have 24 acres of timberland, so it's easy for us. Sadly not everyone has that option. But I've seen some pretty nice options in some town settings. One person had box planters they swapped in n out to provide fresh pasture. Buff Orps will be on our order list this year again, I want some "Momma birds", so I will payvattention this Winter and see how they respond in comparison to others. I will also take note of how the wild population is interacting with the chickens on my place. Thanks for the conversation.

Red Stars are also excellent companions. One found me and one found my daughter, and we couldn't ask for a nicer, more entertaining bird. Mine would come to the back door (I was working from home) to cluck at me to come out and lift up all the rocks and stepping stones so she could eat the bugs. My daughter's was the only chicken on her ranchette to hang out with the people at the hot tub. I will definitely be getting these again!

Good video! Up here in the mountains I need a black bird, anything white and the hawks go crazy and eat them up. I also look for a bird that can stand -40F for a week at a time so it needs to be a big bird. I also look for a dual purpose for meat and eggs. I also need just one breed, can't mix them up for my purpose because I sell the hatching eggs. I used to have Rhode Island Reds but the bottom fell out of the hatching egg market, now I'm looking for another breed that is popular but not that popular to keep competition down and sells for a lot of money for a dozen hatching eggs to try to capture that market. I also run my chickens with ducks and sell those hatching eggs as well. Just a few things to consider...

I saw that there are speckled sussex chickens and if anyone knows, how often do speckled sussex hens go broody and what is the average temperament of the roosters?
@dianeveilleux6452
@dianeveilleux6452 4 жыл бұрын
Don't know about roosters but can fill you in on hens. Speckled Sussex chickens are wonderful. Great, easy going personalities and love to chatter away right next to you in the yard. My grandchildren love them and I have a 5 yr old hen that still lays 5 eggs a week. My biggest complaint is they go broody at least 2 times a year. I don't keep a rooster because I live in town so no fertile eggs for a broody hen to sit on. I don't like having to separate them from the flock to help them get over the broodiness. But other than that, they are wonderful chickens.
@McMurrayHatchery
@McMurrayHatchery 4 жыл бұрын
The rooster we show in this video is Murray, he's a Speckled Sussex. He is nice, calm and alert. It all depends on each rooster - you'll find people who say they are nice and people who won't. Our experience is they have a nice, even temperament and get along well in a flock. The hens are more likely to go broody and make very good mothers.

Leghorns, Red Stars, and Whiting True Greens are the top laying breeds. Other top layers include Rhode Island Reds and Black Stars. Since you're so far south, look at Minorcas, they do well in hot climates. Any of our meat birds will do well if protected from extreme heat and given access to grass. Give us a call and we can give you recommendations based on how you plan to raise your meat birds, and if you're looking for fast growing or slow growing. Our number is 800.456.3280.

how do you keep different breeds on a homestead and preserve genetics . Even if you have 1 breed. cant you only have 1 rooster meaning all your chicks will be half siblings
@gerrymatheson4020
@gerrymatheson4020 3 жыл бұрын
You want one rooster for every 5 or 6 hens. Some say one for every 10. You could have a half dozen of several different breeds (5 hens and a rooster). If you had one separate smaller coop and run where you could isolate, you could run them all together in the main coop and run and just cycle thru pulling out breed set to isolate for a few weeks (wait at least to weeks before saving eggs to hatch to ensure other cocks sperm are not still viable in the hens...I've heard some breeds can last even 4 weeks so you might have to do some research. Only one sperm can fertilize one egg but if there's a mix of sperm from different cocks it's a lottery.) If you had multiple separate places you could isolate several "sets" at once. And yes, you might want to bring in new blood (a rooster from a different breeder) every year.

You can do a better video than this for homestead breeds, or even to just better market birds to anyone. You should list the breeds for each catagory and cut in 10 - 15 seconds of footage of that bird from the farm's that are producing eggs for that breed for the hatchery, or customer's flocks who are proud of what they have grown and would like to show it off. Have the names of the breed on the screen and include a clutch of 3 eggs to show colour, throw in a standard Grade A large egg for comparison if the size is different or to make the colour 'pop' to quote you. Show us what we can expect unsexed chicks to look like when they near harvest, what the hens are going to look like if we may want to keep them to grow on and lay eggs for a while before harvesting for meat. You've got the resources. People don't want to flip through pictures anymore. They want videos! And don't forget ducks! They can lay as many eggs as a lot of so called egg layers and they can produce a nice Sunday roast too. I've spent days trying to figure out what I would put into my imaginary flock, waiting for websites to open, paging back and forth and it can be very frustrating. I can't imagine someone actually trying to populate a coop by a certain date having to do it. Come on, Meat Birds, Egg Layers, Dual Purpose, Coloured Eggs - there's 4 top videos for views for your website next year!

@JamieSantos

It means you can sex the bird from hatch because of the coloring. The male might be a light color while the female will be a darker color, or, visa versa.
@McMurrayHatchery
@McMurrayHatchery 4 жыл бұрын
That's a term that means the gender of the chicks can be identified at hatch by color. These are hybrid breeds so that is not an inherited trait in future generations. Our Red Star, is a sex link chicken breed and are our best brown egg layers.
