The previous Kawasaki ER-6n was a great bike and didn't need much improving, but Kawasaki has made a few tweaks.
The new revised version tested here has slightly changed fuelling, a revised chassis and slightly different looks. But how does it compare to its budget rivals, the Suzuki SV650 and Ducati Monster 696?
Read the full test in the January 14 edition of MCN to find out more.

Kawasaki is the winner....no contest. I have the same smaller engine parallel twin Gpz500S. 50 bhp cruises well above the legal limit, with more to go, totally reliable and I thrash it every day. It's a well proven engine.

The increments of an analogue speedo are usually even, so if you know your speedo a quick glance at the needle is all you need to tell the speed.

If you go to some of the annual events there are demo rides from most manufacturers. At the AMA Vintage races at Mid-Ohio last year, there was Triumph, Kawasaki, Harley-Davidson, Can-Am, Piaggio, Buell...and others I can't remember off the top of my head. Other than having an established relationship with a dealer (as in having spent tens of thousands of $ in the past), the big events are your best bet.

The ducati's engine only has 2 valves, where the other two has 4 valves. Being a wet test they never got the chance to see how good they really are. I've not rode a monster but the supersport model and I find them easy to ride. I think the ducati would be best in the twisties with it's brembo brakes, good forks, wheels and being the lightest. For those out there who might be thinking of one of these bikes. Test ride for yourselfs and make your own minds up. See which suits your riding best.

you would be supprised as to how many streetbikes are over 60hp (including these ones) and how little hp is required on them to do half the 0-60mph of a modern sportscar. Not to mention the price difference. As for ugly - thankyou for pointing out that these are in the streetfighter class. You "ugly" statement has been greatly appreciated. Also worth noting was the ER-6n was voted worlds sexyist in france last year.

Usually I rely upon journalist opinions, seeing the bike in person and sitting on it, videos, past brand experience reported...that's about as good as it gets. I think part of the reason is bikes are considerably more popular in Europe than here...but that's changing. More riders seem to appear every year.

I bought 650R (US) because I ride all year round and like to go long distances, so a naked bike is OUT as first bike. Otherwise I would have bought a used Monster but the Suzuki is Fugly to me. Love the little Kawi, I've had bigger and faster bikes but none better, except for the suspension is marginal. PS: Change your brake pads to EBC sintered or similar ASAP, much more power and feel.

The recording is missing some bass, even the voice is kind of flat. They might be not very loud but you can bet that the engines definitely have more low end noise than in this video.

that wouldn't make any sense though, would it? MCN is a British magazine and the tests are carried out for British riders. The consumers are going to be riding these bikes in the shit weather a lot so it makes sense to test them in their normal environment. Especially seeing as these (especially the SV and ER) are more budget bikes which are likely to be ridden all year in all conditions

@Texarmageddon Inclement weather, rain and cold air get to you quickly with no wind protection :) I miss my little Kawi, I ride a Triumph 955i now wish I could afford to have them both.

Hp figures actually don't tell the whole story of a bike. There is also torque, gearing and weight. I know the ducati is different from the rest as it has 2 valves instead of 4. I believe the cc of them are different too. Rider is the most important factor. having a good relationship between the rider and bike says much more than silly numbers. I ride an old ducati 900ss and the torque to me is far more important than how much hp it makes. On the road it's all you ever need unless your dangerous

@soap0688 Thats a real shame because in england they have lots demonstration bikes. I personally believe we need to make up our own minds because others ride differently and might find they are suited to a different bike. We all buy for different purposes too. Some like town riding and some like to take to the track or go long distance. Maybe the look of the machine too. I guess my friend you need to take a chance then sell it or see if a friend has one for you to test.

@benjyboba Test riding would be nice...in the U.S. it's nearly impossible to get a test ride from a dealer.

@captainobvious9999 i didnt even have a tacho on my last bike :'( lol they should have a digital display with the option to switch between digital readout and analogue display on the screen. they have electronic suspension adjustment i dont see why that would be so hard

You should try drive your bike on woodwalton lane now, they resurfaced it and did a shit job. The tarmac has come up in places on the corners so if you want a smooth corner you have no line.

These arent streetfighters. They're naked bikes. Big Difference. And a crashed 600/1000cc bike with no fairings, renthal MX bars and a Enduro headlight isnt a streetfighter either.

ah a purist. i agree (although these 3 bikes make good fighters!!!). but will you agree that for the general public (who do not know names such as spondon, harris etc) that these are counted in the factory fighter class. aka ugly in the publics eye and not looking like a tube of toothpaste (nasty fairings).

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I haven't met many beholders that see Ducatis as ugly. You also underestimate the power of all of these bikes; they all can accelerate as quickly as a Ferrari Maranello. Vespas are beautiful, but outside of dense urban areas it is difficult to see many advantages beyond drier shoes and better fuel econ. A Vespa 250 costs MORE than the SV650 or ER6n in the US and is still too slow for highway use. Scooter viability depends greatly on location.
