For nearly two decades the seemingly invincible MCU has dominated the cinematic release schedule, but some cracks are showing in their audience response. And when people pause to look more deeply at the company behind that impressive box office record, there’s also growing evidence of some fairly shady practices. So what’s going on under the hood?

The guy referring to the black widow as a S-Word is not the problem. The problem is that she is MADE that way because she is MADE by men, and that's the real problem. You should do a video on how ALL female children's shows are MADE by men, the 2-inch waist, massive make-up and clothes that barely cover anything. Grown men, are influencing what is supposed to be important to our daughters. So, personally I think the black widow is a s-word because she lacks depth just like all the other female movies you showed. I couldn't connect to ANY of them as a girl because none of them are made without the GOD HAND of MEN. It's not s@xist to females by calling the black widow what the MEN have created her from the ground up to be.

When 'Wandavision' was launched, I honestly felt that Marvel was on the direction of creating it's own genre universe, meaning that they had so many characters and universes that they could do any film possible: a western with superheroes, a noir film with superheroes, a sitcom with superheroes, a rom-com with superheroes... And yet, they went into the most generic and bland succession of series: Falcon, Loki, Hawkeye, Moonknight, She-hulk... All of them taste the same to me. Such a wasted potential. 'Wandavision' really opened a new door and they didn't even realized.

How enjoyable this last phase was might be tangential to all the other problems, such as problematic representation, rushed VFX ect. They had a couple of wrenches thrown into their plans, losing chadwick bosemen, and the director of the fantastic four movie stepped away shortly before they planned on shooting. Those were probably two major lynch pins on which they planned the whole phase. If everything had gone to plan, and we got a slow build through the phase to an excellent fantastic four movie, setting up a new avengers team lead by t'challa and the fantastic four set to take on Kang... I think bad VFX, their continued poor representation of minorities would probably barely be a conversation point.

I think now we can safely admit that 2017 through 2019 was the high water mark for Marvel Studios. Between Thor Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Endgame, they were at their peak of cultural primacy. Yeah, Brie Larson herself was/is a fine actress for the most part, though she certainly didn't do herself any favors with how obnoxious she seemed to be becoming off at times even to her own co-stars during the time of filming _Captain Marvel_ and before its release. I'm still unsure if that seemingly out-of-character obnoxiousness was due to frustration or nervousness or something else. Shrug. Either way, she definitely got too much hate over it, but that's almost always the case when people go after actors for bad roles, especially since women and minorities predictably get the brunt of the absurd vitriol. That said, the real problem--besides culture war bullshit--is how Carol Danvers a.k.a. Ms. Marvel a.k.a. Captain Marvel (VI?) was how poorly the character herself has generally been written, both in the movies and in the comics. She basically got derailed like three going on four decades ago during that terrible psychic incubation sexual assault storyline with Marcus Immortus and has never really seemed to recover since. Her flaws got worse on top of her getting various new ones that at times bordered on actual villainy, especially in both idiotic _Civil War_ comic storylines, and Marvel has basically only really course corrected in the sense of trying to make her a Superman-clone but only in power and with very little if any of his heart even at the best of times. So she predictably just ended up coming off as deus ex machina emotionless woman--the female equivalent of the just boring male power fantasy--in the MCU because of it unfortunately, and even in her own bland movie full of retcons her tone and characterization were weirdly all over the place even accounting for the amnesia. When there's only *one* scene in _Captain Marvel_ where the titular character gets to show any seemingly genuine emotion and get any real character development, then you know the character is basically screwed. (For the record, that scene was when she was talking to Monica and kid Rebecca and started getting her memories back. That was nice. Too bad that's so little of the movie.)

Disney in general aren't great with including explicitly LGBT characters. With a few exceptions like The Owl House and Eternals, a lot of their scenes portraying characters like that will be easy to dub (like someone making a passing reference to having a same-sex partner without showing them), easy to cut or slightly alter without impacting the story, and/or rely mostly on subtext without showing anything more intimate than hand-holding.

@@Aaron-kj8dv Yes of course I understand the Phoenix story. But I have to say respectfully you do not. What you describe is not accurate to the original story. Jean Grey and the Phoenix are two separate different individuals, and Jean becomes possessed by Phoenix against her will. She cooperates with Phoenix at first, to save the galaxy. Yes eventually she gets corrupted and THAT's what she fights to control, not something inherently inborn within herself that is dangerous. What you're describing is exactly what I said is what Hollywood did, which is change it into a sexist trope of the emotional woman who must be "controlled." Jean wasn't born Phoenix. They are separate. If you want to understand that, please look up the original comic, and the animated series, and ignore what you saw in the Hollywood movies. Hollywood just made that up. I really do think Marvel’s collaboration with the US Government is what ultimately ruined the Miss Marvel show. The initial Miss Marvel comic run was so deeply influenced by American Islamophobia, from her powers to her storylines, and the show erased everything in favor of a simpler magic girl story. And by erasing the Islamophobia from the story, we also lost Kamala’s original shapeshifting powers and how her decision to appear like herself (a Pakistani girl) is a conscious decision she makes. It also erases how the government genuinely views her as a terroristic threat despite her doing little to no harm in her superhero work.

Tbf, many of the criticisms against MCU right now is that "it's becoming too woke", despite it being the other way around, at least according to this video. Aside from the valid criticisms about the quality of its vfx and the way they undercompensate/undervalue their artists and writers, a lot of the other criticisms are just hate towards the fact that MCU is introducing a more diversed cast, at least compared to before. MoM for example was review-bombed for the fact that Chavez has same-sex parents, despite them having very minimal appearance. So on one hand I think the representation in MCU mostly is really just lip service, and that past MCU really was suspiciously heavily-leaning on white male characters. On the other hand, I don't think those are necessarily some of the reasons the MCU is getting criticized now. Because although MCU can be problematic from that angle, a lot of its audience are just as problematic in the same way, so they're actually in agreement.

It’s not surprising that the LGBTQ+ representation in the Marvel movies is pretty weak. It’s more likely a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it kind of scenario. I still remember at SDCC 2019 when Tessa Thompson announced that King Valkyrie will be searching her queen. Taika Waititi especially looked genuinely excited for it. But in Thor: Love and Thunder, all she did was kiss a random woman’s hand and then flees. Yet Korg gets to have a boyfriend (who is a literal Dwayne the Rock Johnson joke), and even that is presented very briefly.

They are also responsible of the girl-boss version of feminism but with sexual orientations and discriminated races. I'll explain, just like girl-boss is a fake, superficial way of representing feminism, they have found a way to put LGBT+ characters and racialized characters in the spotlight just for the sake of saying see? We are diverse! but without adding the humanization, the protagonism and complexity that those characters would have if they were straight and white. Marvel works well money-wise so of course the rest of the industry tries to copy them and now most of the tv shows out there have LGBT+ characters or racialized characters that copy this format, with storylines always surrounding bullying, pity and of course, just around their sexual orientation and races, yet never touching much serious or real and raw issues like the death-rate we are submitted to in real life. It's always: Oh poor gay side character, the bully threw him to the floor in the school hallway, but never: Let's sit down and talk about the amount of trans people that are killed in a year.

I'd say another big problem that's been dragging the MCU down is its emphasis on comedy and jokes at the expense of letting emotional moments breathe and ironic detachment over sincerity. Alteori made an excellent video on this problem of how this leads to the movies' stories ultimately holding no weight. Contrast that with how The Boys, Invincible, and even Zack Snyder's superhero movies have that sense of weight to them; you FEEL the tension the characters are under and shit really does feel like it's getting real. But the MCU comedy diminishes all that.

Recommend Skip Intro’s video on the MCUs relationship with the military/police (and really all his videos). As for MCU facing a “downfall “ they’re still ruling everything. But for me it’s been a matter of over saturation and them all fitting into the same formula. I think that’s why things like black Panther and wandavision were such a breath of fresh air - where directors managed to wrangle a bit more freedom from the formula.

Also, please note: Sabra was written by American people, who never visited Israel or Palestine. So they clearly viewed my country as “the good guys” and Palestine as “the bad guys.” The name of the heroine Sabra isn’t a reference to the horrible things that happened in Sabra and Shatilla (you can watch Waltz with Bashir to understand the gravity of those events), but a reference to Israeli slang: a Sabra in Hebrew (pronounced Tzabar) is a nickname to an Israeli that is born and raised in the country. I love Brie Larson as an actress, but I don’t love this new direction of her career. She’s just not blockbuster material and I don’t see that as a bad thing. We need more movies like “Room” and “Short Term 12.” Not another Fast and Furious, but that’s what you gotta do now in Hollywood…Hopefully she’s using the money she makes from these movies to find projects that are closer to where she started because she is not someone who seems comfortable doing so much green screen.

Creatively the MCU is pretty rudderless right now, which doesn't help fan reception. Even though the Infinity Saga had some happy-accidents that allowed it to be built into what it was, there was definitely some direction in mind. Doesn't feel that way anymore, and the writing has dropped in quality. Also feels like we lack universe focal points, like what Tony or Steve once were. Also worth noting, conflating Spider-Man 3 and the Fantastic 4 films with Marvel Studios/the MCU is a bit of a misattribution, it doesn't minimize the broader problems with the MCU at all but those were Sony and Fox films respectively. Again, doesn't minimize all of the criticisms here.

what turns me off the most is the milking of the audience, instead of just introducing cool new characters they must be strategically teased out first and carefully planned along with the release of other characters to maximize profits instead of putting the character and storytelling first
@iprobablyforgotsomething

@pat walsh -- "instead of putting the character and storytelling first" . Exactly. They neither care themselves, nor allow those they've hired to care (as is ironically part of their job) about the integrity of the story, thus depriving it -- and every element within it -- of it's quality and even dignity as a self-contained piece of art meant to stand the test of time beyond any given cultural fad it may give reference to in passing. . People will forgive a lot if a story is immersive and the characters are likable (or at least compelling). But currently, the higher-ups' need to first bait audiences and then draw self-congratulatory attention to their lip-service and interferrence, completely derails any enjoyment otherwise found by the audience in the experiencing of the product itself. And the more that happens, and the less money consumers have to spend on escapism in general atm, the less likely people are to give their limited funds over for the sake of a piece of media they already know they won't likely enjoy anyway.... . ...Because of the repeated and on-going disappointments in tv & films anymore when a bunch of businessmen think they're qualified to do the work of professional writers, directors, producers, actors, other artists, and etc. (Which perhaps is why they feel they needn't pay these workers' adequately, since they're taking over these peoples' jobs to some extent, even if only for the micro-managing decision making parts?) . Which is frankly ridiculous, unless these execs are somehow holding several time-consuming-to-acquire degrees for multiple diverse fields -- perhaps they borrowed some Time-Turners, eh? I wish they'd just fund a project or don't fund it, and then butt out and let the qualified people do the dang jobs they were hired for, in a reasonable non-health destroying amount of time. It's not like humans will suddenly develop a mass aversion to (spending their money on) storytelling if the industry chills out and lets their (human, not machine!) employees take the time to develop quality work again. They might even make *more* money on not-crap products, golly gee, what a thought...

These are all valid problems, though I don't think these problems are exclusive to this franchise. This seems like a general critique of the industry. Lots of artists burnout from overworking, the military has had a long-standing relationship with Hollywood, and directors and actors often quit projects when their creative visions are stifled by money-lead decisions. And diversity and inclusion on screen is an on-going issue.

It's sad, Marvel films seems to do to its directors what Marvel editorial used to do to X-Men writers during Bob Harras's run editing the title. Even in "Icons Unearthed," they talk about how Marvel heavily edited the ending of Louis Leterrier / Edward Norton's Hulk movie to be just some cgi throw down with Hulk and Abomination that seemed disconnected with anything else. If Marvel's culture is really like this, I won't miss it. I liked some of the earlier films and Wandavision, but beyond that Marvel movie's are pretty basic and mediocre, IMO

Interesting video and questions, the overall thesis of cracks in the armor and legitimate critiques is strong. That said, I have what are basically just a few nitpicks but I'll throw it out there anyway. Some of the supporting examples/evidence offered were puzzling. Movies like Spider-man 3 and Fantastic Four? They not only pre-date the existence of the MCU they are products of two entirely different, independent studios. Additionally, it was difficult to understand Scorcese's comments as a lead-in to point about abuse of VFX workers. Lastly, an important omission in discussing the Perlmutter problem is the 2015 incident where Feige essentially gave Disney a "he goes or I go" ultimatum resulting in Perlmutter being sidelined and cut out of any movie related decisions. By the time they finally laid him off, Perlmutter was entirely cut off from the creative side of comics, television, and movies. Again, none of this is to contest the overall points, rather to suggest the arguments for them could be bolstered a bit.

I just got tired of the Marvel dialog, always undercutting emotion with a joke. It was fine for some dumb action movies, but I never felt emotionally connected to anyone because they were not characters, they were caricatures. After Endgame, when I felt absolutely nothing for Iron Man's dead, I knew that keeping up with all the movies was a waste of time. I still watch some that may sound interesting on long plane flights, but the last one I watched, the new Dr Strange was absolutely meh, completely cliché and uninteresting beyond a couple of cool scenes and concepts.

While it is obvious that this Sabra is written from a very western point of view, and not by Israelis who live through the conflict like the original Sabra which was written by 2 Israelis, it's lack of nuance can be changed in a movie. There are also many superheroes in the MCU who represent different nationalities, so no reason why Sabra shouldn't get a chance, especially considering how the entire comic book industry is pretty much created by Jews, yet Jewish characters have their entire identity wiped out in the movies.

The execs need to either fund a media project or don't, but if they do -- they need then to get out of the way and let the qualified writers, directors, producers, actors, artists and etc. do their effing jobs. . (And pay them properly for it, and allowed them a production schedule set to run at a reasonable not-insane pace / way too short amount of time; it's not like people will stop spending money on tv and movies if studios don't push out a should-be year-long project in 3 month's by working their employees to near-literal death.) . And as for the stories, and characters... the big bosses need to, again, butt out and let experienced writers, etc. create media that has some flippin' pride in itself. But they neither care themselves, nor allow those they've hired to care (as is ironically part of their job) about the integrity of the story, thus depriving it -- and every element within it -- of it's quality and even dignity as a self-contained piece of art meant to stand the test of time beyond any given cultural fad it may give reference to in passing. . Captain America wasn't created to sell war bonds. The character of Captain America was created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon who were Jewish American and were who hated seeing the USA's inaction during the war and how Jewish people were being treated. So they created Captain America as a Golem. A Golem is a figure from Jewish folklore and is basically a soldier created by the Jewish people to fight for and on behalf of the Jewish people and be their protector. They made the disabled immigrant Steve Rodgers become Captain America a symbol for truth and justice and fighting for what is right and the protector of the innocent. They also purposely made Captain America be blonde with blue eyes and have him punching Hitler in the face on the first ever comic cover to kind of really rub it in. And also the scientist the gives Steve the serum and recruits him Dr Abraham Erskine is also Jewish to again make the point of Captain America being a Golem. This isn't talked about enough but there is a HUGE problem of Jewish erasure in the MCU. Half the characters have Jewish origins and none of them are acknowledged. And some character choices made to certain characters are very problematic in that sense. Having MCU Peggy be British with dark hair is bad because in the comics Peggy is from the US south, is blonde and is a scientist. But there is another female character in the comics called Cynthia Glass who is British with dark hair but she is also a Nazi spy so having MCU Peggy be modelled after the Nazi spy and making her the love interest to the Jewish Golem is kind of not good. Also it is problematic having Wanda and Pietro join Hydra. Hydra in the MCU is very clearly the allegory for Nazi's and in the comics Wanda and Pietro are Jewish Romani and the children of Magneto. You know the Holocaust survivor Magneto. Peter Parker, Bucky, Captain America, Wanda, Pietro and Kate Bishop are all Jewish in the comics yet it is not acknowledged at all in the MCU. And then when we did get an actual Jewish hero/anti hero in the MCU in Moon Knight in Steven Grant/Marc Spector he wasn't played by a Jewish actor. And then they announced that Joe Locke will be playing Billy Maximoff in the upcoming Agatha Harkness series and Billy Maximoff is Jewish and Joe Locke is not. Also the title for the new up coming Captain America movie New World Order is Anti-Semitic. This is a huge thing that nobody seems to want to acknowledge or do anything about. It was Jewish people that basically created comic books and put their stories into the comics and that deserves to be recognised bit it is constantly ignored. I am not Jewish or religious in any way but I have been educating myself on this subject to be better informed. Like the MCU is happy to show Daredevil going to confession and having his faith be an important part of his character and have show Kamala Khan going to mosque and wearing a hijab and being open about her faith but they won't acknowledge the Jewish origins of half the stories and characters within the MCU. That is a problem. Don't get me started on the MCU's pitiful queer representation. That's a whole other story.

What bothers me is that there are plenty of bad movies starring men and women. Yes, the superhero movies starring women have been a disaster before Wonder Woman came out but there were plenty of movies starring men at the time that have also been disasters, like Punisher, The Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, Fantastic Four. The only good Marvel product at the time was X-Men. Yet women seem to get more heat for bad movies than men do. For instance, Captain Marvel did well in the box office but everyone not only makes excuses for its success but trashes Brie Larson for speaking her mind. However, Morbius not only bombed at the box office but Jared Leto was so insufferable that he made people on the set push him around in a wheelchair. Yet Jared Leto doesn't receive the level of hate that Brie Larson does. The level of hate for Phase 4 has also gotten out of control with toxic gatekeeping fans to the point that they're blaming the lack of quality on women by calling it the M-She-U. As a woman fan of Marvel who's dreamed of seeing Marvel movies starring women who don't dress like strippers since the movies first came out and had a mother with the same dream, it feels like being told that I'm not welcome in my own fandom and, honestly, it really hurts.

Like Captain america kissed her lover's niece right after she died, so shouldn't we call him slut first? Its a misogynistic take that let fans lose on women. Like all the rubbish questions directed at Scarlet and never any of the "Alpha-gym-bro-hollywood-feminist" male stars stepped in to support her, even in her fight with Disney. Its heartbreaking.

Ike perlmutter is still right about female superhero movies tho. Not a single good one. Not even wonder woman

Wonder women was great because it was directed by a woman men don't know how to write strong female characters

@@alicianelson1252 but wonder woman was a complete moron in her movie. She naively believed that area was behind everything. Steve Trevor was telling her throughout the movie that maybe it's just them and it's not all black and white and ppl are sometimes bad. She's stupid. Also patty Jenkins turned wonder woman into a rapist in ww 84. And worse. James gunn has done a better job with nebula and gamora then patty with wonder woman.

I was a huge marvel fan since I saw the Avengers in cinema when I was 10, but now I feel so meh about everything they do. With time I saw diversity which was mostly lip service and the reluctance to do a black widow movie enraged me. Now I don’t watch any of their new stuff and don’t really see a future where they change for the better because the status quo that they have been a part of for so long sadly has been very profitable 😢

How is marvels relationship with the military a "controversy" bexause of its inherent "politics" but all of the left wing politics is seen as a positive?

Yes. It's all very wishy-washy and covered in plausible deniability or very easy to cut out for foreign markets.
