(I case anyone isn’t aware, I am strictly speaking of the Dream SMP roleplay Tw: mentions of abuse, manipulation and a green Teletubby being a real tosser) Isn’t that kinda deserved though? I mean- He’s kinda shown that he’s a complete and utter psychopath and he kinda abused children- He constantly manipulates everyone around him and is really creepy about Tommy, like Dream had tunnels in or Tomathy’s walls. He kinda killed Tommy just to prove a point and even though they’re apparently supposed to be ‘friends’ from Dream’s perspective at least, he should’ve offered Tommy emotional support after the kid was revived instead of asking what it was like. If he really is a good person he really needs to show it much more. He seems to think of people more like toys considering the fact that he became bored of the majority of the smp cause they’re ‘not fun’ And he sees Tommy as fun because he’s unpredictable. That just nails it down in place that he’s a sadistic bastard who doesn’t even have cannon family aside from Connor (forgive me if I spelt that wrong) plus I don’t get why people think he learned so many of his twisted ways from Schlatt, like I don’t think it’s even confirmed that Puffy is his mother I think that may have even been proved wrong if anything. Dream seemed to be like that even before Schlatt was introduced to the lore and considering there may be a chance he joined and Bunger(?)berg was cannon to his backstory there’s a low chance Dream and Schlatt never even met before he (I don’t remember if Dream met Schlatt during his first visit or not so I’m just gonna say they met during the election) joined the SMP. Even if Schlatt and Dream’s abusive natures are similar they are very different rest assured, Schlatt seemed to only care about himself despite whoever he made a deal with trying to work with him (mainly Quackity). Dream seems to have this illusion that everyone he cares about cares about him too, which is why he refused to listen to Tommy talking about him being a terrible bastard. I don’t see why C!Dream apologists do that way- Like I don’t get the point of defending the guy that seems like he’s set up to be the true villain. (Lmao sorry I kinda put a bit too much info huh-)

​@@BunnyHopp987 I would disagree with Dream being a psychopath, if he were he would have been abusive and manipulative from the beginning, its a mental disorder which effects the person for their entire life so it will be displayed through the entirety of it. If which if you look at the lore he wasn't really that bad at the beginning. He was a bit of a dick depending on perspective but all his actions before about midway through the pogtopia arc have reasonable justifications. Whether he was the antagonist at that point purely depended on perspective. When he gave Wilbur the tnt and got the revival book from Schlatt was when he took a turn for the worse. And even then those points can be argued to be good things/have good intentions, though I am not going to because I don't personally see it that way but it can be argued. The way I see it Dream as a character isn't psychopathic but insane. He started out as a relatively ok person but due to the circumstances surrounding him he spiraled into insanity which is noticeable if you look at his character throughout the arcs. Dream's character is what happens when you take the end's justify the means to the extreme. By the point of Tommy's death in prison not only was Dream insane but he had also been imprisoned completely isolated from any form of social interaction for a month. Which in itself is a legally recognised form of torture and also would have perpetuated his insanity making his thinking even more irrational then it already was. Add to that the fact that dream had been angered by Tommy killing the cat, it isn't unexpected that he killed him. Tommy was also questioning the legitimacy of the revival book which was the only reason Dream was being kept alive. Dream had reason to believe that if people didn't think the revival book was real then he would be killed. I am not saying killing Tommy is ok, it isn't but this event to often gets simplified when I fell there was a lot more complexity behind it and there were circumstances which influenced Dream decision which are to often ignored. Dream should have offered support to Tommy after death but it is also not something that Dream under his circumstances should be reasonably expected to provide. Dream is insane he isn't going to be able to help Tommy if he wanted to. And he doesn't Dream at this point in the lore is projecting a lot of his issues onto him, from Dreams perspective Tommy is the reason he was imprisoned, Tommy is the reason the wars started etc. That isn't a good line of thinking but that is how Dream would likely be seeing it. Schlatt and Dream have little to no connection in the lore but people like to make au's so I think they should just be left alone, if they want to make a dad schlatt au let them just as long as they aren't interpreting it as canon its fine. I also remember foolish stating that Puffy is Dream's mum I can't find the original clip but I can find an animatic of it (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otGFgs-ky5fLgJ8.html) I wouldn't say Dream believes that everyone on the server is his friend. When Tommy was telling Dream he was a terrible person I always interpreted it as Dream being aware of his actions but wanting to deny their impacts. He doesn't want to think of himself as a bad person despite knowing that he has done bad things. Thats why when asked he says he had good motivations. He recognises what he did was bad, but he doesn't want to think of himself as a bad person which is why when confronted by the bad things he did such as Tommy calling him out he tends to deny it or deny its impact, because if he accepts that his actions had lasting consequences and that he truely hurt people in ways they can't recover then it becomes harder for him to think of himself as a good person and justify his own actions. I would say I am more of a Dream sympathiser then apologist, I have always found myself more interested in villains and I find it interesting to try and understand their motivations. I also find being an apologist for Tommy or Tubbo or Ranboo can be kinda boring because there just isn't much they have done wrong, its easy to be an apologist for them. I also dislike how a lot of the fandoms hatred of him can lead to justifying stuff such as torture. I recognise what Dream did was bad but I find understanding his motivation and recognising him as someone driven insane by circumstance makes for a far better character then evil because evil. I also really dislike how people take his bad actions as justifications for torture, or abuse. It really rubbed me the wrong way when it was first shown that Dream was being tortured and twitch chats reaction was cheering. To me that is never ok. Tommy shouldn't have been abused and Dream shouldn't have been tortured. I do think in many circumstances Dream apologists take it to far and try to justify the abuse that happened to Tommy or say that him having a sad backstory makes it justified. It doesn't abuse under any circumstance is not ok. But sympathising for Dream's character mostly comes out of a desire to see the nuances in the story and recognise that not everything his character does is evil for the sake of evil.

I appreciate the lengths of explanation you used though, as someone who wants to be a psychiatrist in the future I find your explanation interesting.

I don't mean to say that your interpretation is wrong in anyway, there is no "right" way to interpret media. How you interpret the story is going to be influenced by the perspective you watch and thats ok, its part of what makes the Dsmp fandom unique. I can understand why you dislike Dream's character, he has done objectively terrible things and his character is definitely made to be the villain. I personally find that interesting but not everyone does and thats ok. Thank you for being respectful this has been a really interesting conversation.
