In 1984 there was a Hughes 500D for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, it was during that summer when I truly fell in love with this helicopter 🚁 I worked at the Santa Monica airport in California during that time I was a line crewmen refueling planes and got to fuel it several times, To this day I still dream of being able to fly in one, one day a U.S. military H500D landed on our ramp it was that faded typical green color, the pilot reminded me of a movie character because this guy was chisel cut physic , when you pop open the little fuel door there was a genuine “U.S. government credit card!!” In it’s own holding place, it didn’t have doors at the time and the pilot to me at least was showing off or maybe that was just his style but stood outside of the helicopter and started it up and proceeded to strap his helmet on and then got in, cool… but wait there’s more, he hovered as steady as a solid rock of granite before he took off, I remember this like it happened yesterday. Just a awesome awesome bird.

What part of helicopter ownership is not expensive? These are flying toys just like the ones I fly remotely albeit a whole different experience and level... I have flown R22's and breifly tried my hand with the ole FH1100 (Fairchild Hiller 1100) "Poor Man's JetRanger". Aside from the cost... it still is worth it if you can afford to own one. Yes... I was bitten by the "bug" many years ago... ;) I have flown in the original C and D model versions and would love the chance in flying at least in one of this version's birds.

Former helicopter pilot here . I flew in the Argentine Air Force the Hughes 369 HM /500C /500D series then I flew the Bell UH1H "Huey" and the next couple of years I flew the IA58 "Pucara", which is an antihelicopter twin turboprop aircraft. Some years latter I was assigned to the UN Minustah (Haiti) for a six -month tour. I flew there the bell 212. I can say now that my initial training in the Hughes allowed me to fly later fully focused on all aspects of Flight . Thanks to the Hughes & Pucara experience I learned coordination and spatial orientation, as well as maintaining a steady and natural flight and how to fight anti-helicoter aircraft . Thanks for your video!

I remember watching Magnum PI as a kid. Magnums pilot buddy TC flew an MD5xx. I've loved it ever since. Kinda ironic, but, my first real job was building visual DBs for simulators. The company mainly built computer visual systems (a bit before GPU graphics 😂). On my first day I was introduced to my "review station" which was a 3 x 3 array of monitors with an office chair bolted to the floor in front. There was a real cyclic, collective, and footpedals arranged around the chair. I basically had to learn to fly rotary wing to review my work. I crashed allot but after a few days of persistence I finally figured it out. Like riding a bike... you never forget. The main flight SW I used was for the MH6 Littlebird. So incredibly gratifying and fun! I'm eventually gonna learn how to really fly. As soon as I'm able to afford my own, the MD530F (or similar) will be my first choice.

I flew as rigger/signal man from my helicopter school (RotorAir) to set 2 air conditioner pumps into the ac units on the building behind the courthouse at 26th and California (Chicago) in 1979 with a Hughes 500c model. Even the old 4 bladed 500c could really haul ass. Pete and I came straight to the job from Madison, made the picks, then hopped over to Midway for a top off and breakfast at that little resaurant on 55th just east of Central, then back to Madison. We followed the Fox River for about 10 miles at 20 feet and 120kts. Good times.

I got to fly the "new" 500D in '79 in Arizona at Long Mesa Havasupai. I'd been flying a Bell 206 for sling ops primarily. Well, that 500 flew circles around that 206 with sling loads. But the boss man said no, we don't need one. I was still excited to fly it though, then later that year I changed jobs to flying in the Gulf of Mexico oil & gas industry. Y'all have a great day, and thank you James 👍🇺🇸

@@stot2614 🤣 Right !! I've flown probably close to 5k hrs in the 206 series, (mostly offshore but also in Grand Canyon (Havasupai). It is a very good aircraft. I've also a lot of time (3k+), in the BK 117 series. When I got my Rotor wing ATP , it was in a 206L-3 in 1983. Then I typed in the AS 350/355 also in '83. In '84, I flew the BO-105 series, the Bell 212, 222UT, and 412. But that 500 was one of my most favorite helicopters 👍🇺🇸

@@billyhillk5726 for sling operations, I’d take a 500 over any Bell series, ANYDAY of the week, especially if it’s precision long lining? It’s so much easier when you’re sitting in the LH seat, right over top of the collective, instead of having to reach for it in a 206 or Astar? Once you trim it out proper, you’ll look like a long line ninja by the end of the day!!! My only gripe is the head room for pilots over 6ft wearing helmets? You’re guaranteed to rub the paint off of it in no time!

I saw a vid last week on the latest model Jet Ranger (505). The guy was saying he loved his MD500 series but sold it due to operating costs. He mostly runs low altitude operations with hunters hanging out the doors. I personally despise teetering rotor systems, but Bell seems to be getting a lot right with the 505. Much as I like the MD, it's also worth a mention that the 520N killed the maintenance pilot for our local San Jose PD, and they replaced it with an EC-135. I got a ride along in the EC-135 and I must say it's awesome.

I'm no pilot, but I love flying these in Battlefield 1942: Desert Combat, lol. It's so responsive and light. The only drag was they didn't have hellfires, so they were only good for anti-personnel. Then I found OpenRFA and was able to extract and modify the data in BF's RFA files to make a Frankenchopper with all sorts of goodies strapped to it. I then placed it in Bocage, El Alamein, Ambush at Checkpoint Delta and Desertshield off in the corner of the map. Spawn in, grab a jet, fly over and dump it then come back in this chopper and drive my friends in the LAN party nuts :D

Having flown both semi and fully-articulated rotors, I prefer the former. Once you get the feel of a fully articulating system I would agree that they are more precise but that also makes them less forgiving. Just a personal choice - the Hughes 500 is one hell of a Helo.
@Buzz407-
@Buzz407- 9 ай бұрын
I'm curious, what is it about semi-articulated rotors that makes you prefer them? My experience in a Jetranger was kind of disappointing, it felt like I was a little "too far" ahead of the helicopter if that makes sense.

In a word stability particularly in a hover. Just my personal "feel" for the Helo I would think. I've flow both Bell Jet Rangers as well as a Hughes 269 & 500. When you say "too far" ahead are you thinking less responsive to the flight controls? If thats what you are saying I would agree to some extent. The fully articulating rotors are incredibly responsive but again much less forgiving.

You know, they took a Bell 47 to 18440 ft if I recall correctly back in 1949 or something like that over the Alps... I tried to do it in MSFS 2020, I got to 15300 ft, also over the alps in a Bell 47, it took an hour to get up and 15 mintues to get down. And world record in a helicopter is 48000 ft with autoroation down because engine eventually stalled in a AS350. I think the "offical" record tho is still 43000 odd feet in a AS350... My favorite helicopters are probably BO105, Gazelle and then these, but its difficult to really choose, they are all so cool... Heck, its what I like about helicopters, EVERY helicopter is cool and any of them would be fun to fly and they can all do incredible stuff no other aircraft will do outside some weird drone line think. The Bell 206 is gearbox limited, the engine can produce 420 hp, but limtied to 317. Think that is true with many especially the smaller helicopters.

Thank you for the video, many of the Heli’s here are not 530ff’s but D and E models with C20b and C20r engines. The 530ff c30r engine is limited to 425hp via the gear box and 350hp max continuous. THE SAME as the D and E C20b and r engine. The difference is that it runs cooler and has longer main blades, larger tail blades and and extension to the tail rotor enabling higher operation. Thanks again. Love G-HUKA that’s a C20r enhanced.

Interesting. but why can it hover at higher altitude if it's limited to same power? is it just bigger blades like you mentioned that make this possible?
@irisaviation852
@irisaviation852 2 жыл бұрын
@@juliank6368 the engine is limited by either TRQ (horsepower) or turbine temp (TOT). At sea level the TRQ is normally the limiting point but as the aircraft goes higher (or it’s hotter with a higher density altitude) the limit will be TOT and you can not achieve max TRQ. A more powerful turbine will have a LARGE compressor and be a lot cooler so can produce max TRQ at higher altitudes because they are not TOT limited. The C30 turbine in the 530ff is a good example of this and is fitted with larger blades etc to cope with the thinner air. Rolls Royce now produce enhanced turbines for both the C20b and C20r. C20b enhanced at max trq has a theoretical max HP of about 700hp which means it runs about 50c cooler than the book figures. Not sure any of this makes sense but I tried.

This might be a silly question. But do you know what is the purposes or function of text and number near the main rotor of MD? Same goes apply to the airplane and helicopter which painted on the tail. They called it "Registration tail number". Some md500 text are use as "sheriff" for example.
@RelativeMotionCC
@RelativeMotionCC 2 жыл бұрын
I think what you are talking about is called, like you said the registration number (or call sign). This is the aircraft's identifier to anyone looking at it, similar to a license plate on a car. It is also used on the Radio to identify who is talking and who the message is for. Very simply, its an identity unique to that aircraft. Hope that is able to answer your question!

FYI, they do make an MD530FF. The FF has longer blades and is the hot performer. And it's not that they loose power at altitude, it's that they " temp" out and that's what limits you. Like any jet or turbine fixed wing.
@wmharris9084
@wmharris9084 2 жыл бұрын
@R A I think it's an 530f but with linger blades and some other changes. I do know it has performance improvements. But hey, all my time on turbines are of the fixed wing type so you'll have to confirm.

in the video at 2:07 he says that the bell 206 has 300 hp which is incorrect. the bell 206 with the allison c20 makes 420 hp and the md 500 has also the same turbine but when he mentions the md 500 at 2:11 he says it makes 420 hp so yeah.... this turbine is one of the most used turbine in helicopters and is also used in the bo 105 twice so 840hp. I don't want to be rude or insult someone. I just want to correct the info of the video in the comments. Have a good one🤣
