HOW TO: Restore a K5 Train Horn (Natural Finish)

Here's an overview of how I restored the Nathan AirChime 5 chime K horn from Amtrak AEM-7 906 to a bare aluminum natural finish. It had a fair amount of corrosion that was removed and restored to like-new condition. If there's something I didn't cover, feel free to drop a question in the comments.

This is a handy video for K series horn restoration. Because I'm planning on purchasing a K3LA off of one of the big BN MACs in storage.

If you don’t mind me asking, how are you purchasing a K3LA from a unit in storage? I’ve been real interested in getting me one of those old Wide font K3s used on the MACs.

I know it sounds silly but I’m going to ask the yard if I can buy one of those horns. Probably I’ll get the one off of 9402 if it’s original.

I have been curious as to how exactly the dual Graham White 501 valve setup is configured in the Genesis, Acela, and HHP-8. As far as I understand it, there is a two-stage button, and the first stage activates one of the valves which is restricted in some way to provide that half-blast sound. The second stage apparently activates both valves for full blast. My questions are: how exactly is the first valve restricted, and what model of GW 501 valve is used (I have seen two different models online)? Any insight into this from someone knowledgeable on the subject such as yourself would be very much appreciated.

Very nice!!! Can this process be duplicated with Nathan M3’s? Would there be anything different done when performing this on a M horn rather than the K horn?

How do you acquire these horns off of the AEM-7. Do you call Amtrak directly? Lol.
@mdamttc199
@mdamttc199 6 жыл бұрын
Alex Paumen, no. Amtrak sold horns from AEM-7s on eBay for a little while but stopped. This one came from the scrapper that cut up the unit.

Gonna be honest, it sounded pretty great coming off of the engine, but it was a lot better after.

Did you Prep & Etch the diaphragms? Or just use the steel wool? Just picked up a K5 and want to do the exact same process. Also, what was your Prep & Etch ratio? Did you dilute it at all?
@mdamttc199
@mdamttc199 2 жыл бұрын
I just used 0000 steel wool on the diaphragms. I mixed the solution 50/50 with water.

@@mdamttc199 Thanks so much for the feedback, excellent video, I saved it to my "Good Ones" lol. Do you mind if I pick your brain a little more? I re-watched a few times and didn't hear (or see) you use the Prep & Etch for the manifold, it just showed to horns getting bathed and scrubbed. Did you use it on the manifold and if you did, did you plug up the inlet holes so Etch / water didn't get inside? Should I clean the inside of the manifold with something? I haven't opened it up yet due to the bolts being rusty, I just sprayed it with rust-penetrate to get them loose, but if inside the diaphragms / seals are damaged do you know where I could order replacements? It's the horn from CSX-4402 which was sent to the scrapyard after it collided head-on with CSX-5000, so I want to make sure this baby is in tip-top shape, thanks for your expertise Kind Sir.

@@skyvipers yes you can prep n etch the manifold and let it go inside. Just be sure to rinse it out well and use pipe cleaner or bottle brushes to make sure it’s clean. Usually the inside of a manifold is pretty clean unless a bunch of compressor sludge made it’s way in. The diaphragms would have to be purchased as it’s not a common thing you’d find most places. They show up on eBay or you could look into other avenues

when you applied the prep and etch, did you soak the horn in it or just spray it on and then scrub? and what did you use to scrub the horn with just a wire brush??
@mdamttc199
@mdamttc199 2 жыл бұрын
Sprayed it on and used plastic bristled brushes and 0000 steel wool. Metal brushes will scratch and scar the metal.

Doesn't sound like it's getting enough volume of air through it from that small tubing on the side of the manifold. Consider using the bottom flange air inlet, it's a bit larger & what it is originally intended for. P.S.I. should be approx. 125 - 150 IIRC also & use a big air tank (30gal or so & up) with min. 3/4" I.D. tubing or pipe with a GENUINE Graham White locomotive horn valve. Trust me, it'll sound way better.

Peter Rosenquist I have a life beyond KZfaq. Please take up any issues you may have with KZfaq and or law makers. The report was legit, and I don’t appreciate people stealing my work. End of story. Unless you support stealing, your time would be better spent directing whatever angst you have to people that think it’s okay to claim Fair Use as a legit reason to use things without permission. You might also consider learning proper punctuation for a question.

mdamttc199 I have found out what it was due to another copyright claim to the person I mentioned. I am sorry for my harshness towards you. I wanted to see more of the train collisions/wrecks documentary. That's why I got offended by your copyright claim. I hope you understand.

Is there any torque spec for the back caps or ??

Not that I’m aware of. They should be snug but not over tightened as the aluminum threads will strip easily.
