St. Paul's Metropolitan Cathedral in Mdina was designed by Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafà in the Baroque style and constructed between 1696 and 1705 on the site of the previous 12th century cathedral that was damaged by an earthquake in 1693.
The frescoes on the cathedral's vaulted ceiling depict the life of St. Paul and were painted in 1794 by the Sicilian Manno brothers, Vincenzo, Antonio and Francesco. The dome depicts the Glory of St. Peter and St. Paul and was painted by Mario Caffaro Rore in the early 20th century to replace earlier frescoes that were damaged. Paintings and frescoes by various masters including Mattia Preti and his bottega adorn the aisles and chapels. The cathedral's three stained glass windows were produced in Victor Gesta's workshop in the late 19th century. The floor consists of inlaid marble tombstones and commemorative slabs.
