When a patient says a cat has predicted her death, Dr. House and his team put her theory to the test.
From House M.D. Season 5 Episode 18 'Here Kitty' - House and the team take on the case of Morgan who works in a nursing home with a pet cat who only sleeps next to people if they are about to die - and does so with alarmingly accuracy. When it seems the cat has predicted her own death, Morgan, convinced she is about to die, fakes a seizure in order to get to House to have him diagnose her before it's too late.
House (2004) Dr House, an ingenious and unsociable physician who flouts hospital rules, clashes with fellow doctors and his assistants as he comes up with controversial hypotheses about his patients' illnesses.

You know it’s cool, there is a real life story of a cat that would do this. Apparently when dying people secrete a smell that is particular cat was attracted to and humans could not detect and would sleep with them and hang out with them till they died. I can just imagine laying in bed and the cat coming to cuddle and thinking “oh great the death cat has come to purr me to the after life.” Horrible way to die if you were allergic but great if you are a cat lover.

It absolutely is a real thing. My parents own an old people's home and they have a cat here that does the same thing, he can sense when someone isn't feeling well or starting to slip away and will lie with them and keep them company until they died. They have used the cat being around a certain inhabitant for longer than usual as a sign to call the relatives and it has actually predicted more than one death correctly.

It's not just cats, ive read about this phenomena for decades, animals are sensitive to something and they know when it's time. I believe it was one of those ugly rug haired dogs I saw last doing this in seniors' home.

@Neci "actually predicted" < --- No.. they just never bothered to find out why it was attracted to those patient. It's a cute story but just like in the show, that's all it was. You think House ever told the news what was really going on and even if he did, it's unlikely the local news would've reported it to the public. Miracle poof pieces like these exist because something happened and the story without the explanation is more interesting.

When my friend had to stay in the hospital for a few days for surgery, I stayed at his place to look after his three cats. The heat in his apartment wasn’t working properly, so I was using an electric blanket while I was there. Every night, the cats would sleep all lined up like sausages around my legs 😂

In general cats are actually quite well behaved, the issue a lot of times is with their handlers or rather their servants Cats are a lesson in consent Pet a cat when they don't want it, and persist in doing so, you're likely to get bit The overwhelming majority of "problem cats" are actually a result of their environment or their humans

This episode was based on a real cat, but instead of being in a hospital it was a hospice and the cat's name was Oscar. He'd lay on someone's bed, and within the next day (or even week) they'd die. Look up Oscar the Hospice cat

Yes I read it, Very interesting. I did hospice work and the signs someone is close to the end are very subtle. I think there are biochemical changes animals can smell. Cats and dogs can tell it in each other as well.

My aunt had a dog which predicted deaths. She and my uncle did pet therapy and took a couple of their dog around to hospitals and nursing homes. Every once and a while, "Millie" would act completely out of character in certain rooms. They eventually noticed that when it happened, the person in that room died within a day.

Probably so. I would think when a person is near death, heart, breath, and even smell will be different. Animals understand death, humans do to but they force the mind to avoid the idea.

@@jeep146 Yea...Considering that some dogs have been shown to detect cancer and other diseases...I wouldn't discount smell (or hearing) as the sense which 'tells' when someone is near death.

The arm above the head thing to see if people are faking unconsciousness isn't how people would react most of the time. The way people would react if they are faking fainting is the arm would avoid falling on the head. If they were actually unconscious then the arm would fall on the head. They wouldn't catch their arm midair above their head. It would fall to the side

Interesting!! Another way to tell is by gently touching the eyelashes or eyelids of that person. You can tell they’re faking if they flinch😂

There have been cases of animals being able to detect certain tumors, dogs being able to detect seizures before they happen by scent, and cats being able to smell when someone’s body shuts down before death. Apparently you start to die a while before you actually do pass if you die from a long term illness or dementia or old age. That process can take hours or even a day, according to my mom who worked in a nursing home for years. She said their eyes set a certain way and the feet change color and get darker/purplish and you knew to call the family.

My roommate has seizures pretty regularly and I will admit the first time I was pretty panicked but I was able to quickly calm down and handle the situation and take care of her and make sure she didn’t hurt herself. Now it’s pretty normal and I can tel when they are about to happen so I’ll just go sit next to her and I’ll get her to watch something on my phone and once she starts seizing I just gently lay her down on her side and make sure she doesn’t bite herself like her tongue while I call her mom and continue to let my roommate know that I’m still there. You learn to keep calm in stressful situations for the safety of the other person :)

My face was like that of Tommy Lee Jones, when he was acting K in MIB. I was like completely emotionless. Dont worry, the guy is fine and was send to the hospital pronto

the idea is that a patient who is seeing house has something no other doctors can figure out, so they do everything to solve the mystery, including inspecting environmental factors at home.

I've worked in Nursing homes for the last 26 years but I have genuinely seen this with a cat predicting death. As a care assistant, you see things and experience things that sometimes can't be explained...

A Japanese friend's cat would do this until he passed of old age. He was found as a kitten almost dead from winter cold bit my friend's grandparents rescued him and he was known to go to the hospital and lay on the beds of patients who would pass afterwards.

Well thanks to the movie The Mummy I learnt at a young age cats are guardians of the underworld. And I will forever have a cat in my life to keep ghosts and such away from me. Non-human animals see and hear things we humans can’t. Sometimes it’s just a bug on the wall I can’t see, other times I don’t judge their actions and hope whatever they see won’t kill me.

This is based on a real cat that would go into the room of one of the people in the nursing home it lived in. The cat wouldn't leave that person until they passed away. Then she'd be normal again.

I think the "predict death" thing is based off a smell. This smell wouldnt happen when someone decides to kill themselves on a seemingly random day but more so if they were sick for a while.

Animals have such a strong sense of smell that they can smell when people are about to die. Chemicals are released towards death which allows the body to shut down peacefully and slowly. Cats and dogs can smell death, pregnancy, cancer and other types of diseases and illnesses. They are absolutely amazing and there used to be a cat in a nursing home that did this and often terrorized its patients 😭😭 they all thought they would die bc of him

I’ve seen a book called Making The Rounds With Oscar. This was the real life cat that made the news for this. Then it came out how common the death cats are, with one facility after another coming out with stories about a resident cat who does the same thing. I’ve never heard of an explication of this phenomenon.

@@christinamann3640 I am a avid reader and my education is in medicine. I love cats, so I understood half of it. If you want the short version I will tell you but some people might find it gruesome. Look up Ask a Mortician..her book is called…Will my cat eat my eyeballs? Her channel is extremely educational and you learn a lot about historical events…it is far from gruesome and she is very professional. Give it a chance and She covered this once, but I am not sure which one. You may enjoy it as you like house. Good luck! And for the record I am a woman, married, and do not want you think some weird Canadian guy is trying anything!

@@christinamann3640 Cats have excellent smell, they can detect things that people cannot. Always remember that they are animals, with instincts. The title of the book is based on the fact that cats will eat a dead human. Dogs will not. That is why I wanted to explain this so gently. They have to be starving, but they are very good at survival if need be. It is part of them. Please do not get upset, and I can promise you your cat does not really want to eat you. Lol. I think cats also sense when someone needs a cuddle or is sad. I have experienced. Nature or nurture? Who knows. All I can say is that I took in a wild feral cat six years ago, it took a long time, but he is happy, healthy, and a much loved member of our family. He was my greatest challenge and most rewarding. No one else would have this poor baby a chance. I went as far as to contact a vet in LA who had a radio show and he was very helpful. And free! He sent me a book about cat behaviour and it was excellent.

What I love about cats is how much you can see and sense that they are always in alpha mode lol. I make friends with every stray I come across. At this point i keep cans of cat food in my bag for when I walk through the neighborhood.
