found some articles about him. After decades of piloting abstinence, a glider off-airport landing near his house got him an invitation to the local glider club. He got a guest flight incl. the "full acrobatics program" and was hooked again. At the age of 75 he redid his glider licence taking all actual courses, tests and medical examination. I the following years he did 400 flights until aged 88. He died in November 2019 at the age of 95. During the event he was talking about, he was 20 years old.

I too appreciate hearing these men talk about their experiences in the final stages of WWII. My late uncle survived 35 missions with the 15th Air Force flying out of Southern Italy. He was a radioman/top turret gunner. My father says he was never the same after the war. It was grim in the Army Airforce bomber groups when less than 33% would survive their missions. Grim too for the German Fighter pilots, who as Gunther Rall has said, you had to keep flying until something happened. Just prior to my father's passing in 2016, I went with him on a flight in the sole flying B-24, "Witchcraft". He got to sit in the seat his younger brother occupied. It's terrifying to think that a pellet gun could penetrate those bombers... can't imagine the 20 and 30 mm cannons... and 88 mm flak. Near the end of my uncle's life, he started to relay what had happened during his missions. Importantly, he said the Germans always knew where they were headed before the American air crews were brief. The Germans set up the 88's on rail cars to travel with the bomber flights. Increased exposure time and reduced the speed differential. Terrifying...

I love these guy's they speak as if it was yesterdays mission.
