Me Made May 2024 - Plans and Personal Pledge

I've been thinking a lot about what to do for Me Made May this year. I always try to make a plan that is particularly meaningful to me. This year, I'm pledging to reduce my scraps by half and to evaluate my dream wardrobe.

PS....I cannot cut a straight line EVER!! 100 percent the binding covering the interfacing is a spot on idea. You know, part of our SUPER POWER is problem solving!!! I think it could be the major part for me!!!!!❤

I always appreciate hearing your self-reflection, Theresa. I'm no longer working and don't have any needs, but desire a wardrobe with pieces that fit me and don't make me feel sad.I never had to work so hard and have found the process makes sewing less fun for me. I am going to set small goals for myself and remember that I have NO production schedule. Thanks for your content! -Kelly

I feel like it can be easy to get into a rut with our wardrobe as much as with anything else. I hope you can light a spark and figure out what it is that is missing for you. Particularly for those of us who sew, clothing has such potential to bring us joy. Good luck finding it!

Looking forward to your video series! I'm also trying to become more mindful with my sewing and personal style. It's funny, as sewists we have the freedom to make and wear what we like, regardless of what's available in the stores. But sometimes we need to pay a little attention, otherwise we may just end up restricting ourselves to current sewing pattern trends, or recreating what we see in the stores... Nothing wrong with that, of course. But I wish we could all wear what we feel most comfortable and glamorous in. ☺️

I also feel like it's really easy to just get stuck in a rut of making the same old kinds of things. When you go shopping, you're more likely to try on different things. When I'm sewing, I tend to try and go with what I know works, what feels safe... It'll be interesting to see what comes from this!

I loved your ideas... and promptly got "The Curated Closet" out of the library. There are so many good ideas in there. I was able to go through my closet again and remove several items I don't wear... and don't ever see myself wearing again. One thing that I found extra helpful was the advice that if you liked something a lot, but not all the way... find a way to do so. Three of the items in my closet were ones I really liked, but never wore. I'd put them on and decide against them... but I still liked them. So - I thought about it (a little bit of duh here and I'm old enough to have thought of this earlier)... they were all long and draggy (on me) tunic length. I've shortened all three now and I will be wearing them happily. Thanks for giving me much to think about.

Ooh, I love these pledges and can't wait to follow along as you work through it! Like you, I reflect on, and alter, my me mades throughout the year, but I find MMM a great time to really focus on that, and on how I feel about my clothing and my style. Forcing myself to take, and post, the daily photo and write down my thoughts on my outfit is a crucial part of that process. I haven't hashed out the wording of my pledge yet, but the concept is similar to your second one, about getting my actual wardrobe to be more aligned with my ideal one.

My goal is tnew o sew clothes with a very deliberate style, which will take into account 1) fabric potential styles 2) how I will combine the garment-to-be with other parts of my wardrobe 3) the occasion I will wear my garment-to-be

@@LostMyThread I can never really settle on 3 style words, but playful is definitely part of my style. I have found that remembering my best silhouettes (semi fitted and fitted), always having color contrast (black and white and a pop of color), and having a noticeably handmade/crafty element to every outfit makes me feel the most like me. Always evolving though! ❤️

@@theclotheserinsews I totally agree that those all sound very much like your style aesthetic. It fascinates me to spot overlap with people's styles but find different ways to describe them. We might be doing similar things but for different reasons. No wonder there are so many approaches/guides to analyse it!

Love this idea and I can see how useful it would be for sewing, buying and day to day wearing my clothes. I think I will get the planner as a more structured way to approach what I have already been doing. I miss seeing how this worked for Alex Judge since she stopped vlogging. Thanks, Nancy! There's definitely no right and wrong way to approach improving our wardrobe, but it's always interesting to try something different. I completely forgot about Alex's videos on this subject. I somehow never watched them, even though I used to watch her channel very regularly! 🙈 Sometimes life gets in the way.... I'm very interested to go check them out now!

This is a really ambitious project, it's doable though. It sounds great. I have a style mantra that I am working on, mine is " creative not crazy". I am not interested in dressing like Iris Apfel or having a Magnolia Pearl style wardrobe, but I want interesting garments, with creative tweaks.

I think that having a personal mantra for your style sounds awesome. You can keep that in mind with every sewing project and even every time you get dressed!

Hi Theresa..Have you heard about Jen from Everyday Style. She has a free podcast you might enjoy.I just borrowed The Curated Closet from my online library..I use the app Libby. I'm a quilter who loves creating beautiful quilts from scraps and have been learning to sew my own garments as time allows for a year or so. Will LOVE to see what you do with your garment scraps, That I have only played with a couple of times, usually out of frustration of not getting the garment fit right on myself and just inserting different color fabrics. 🤣 My nightgown is the comfiest ever but eventually I will make a prettier one. The Cashmerette Kineton and Donny shirt I used this technique on have already been donated. I'm hoping to keep improving and make things that fit me and that I love. xx Karen

I've been floundering around with what, if anything, I want to do for Me Made May this year. Right now my machine is in the shop and my motivation seems to have left the house with it. The estimate was for three weeks and that will be up just after this weekend. Fingers crossed it will be ready to come home soon, Antonia

I am very intetested to see how you tackle this process. I have been trying to create a more cohesive wardrobe the past few years and shopping (either retail or for fabric) in a color palatte. I definitely think that following any set of rules can become a bit too rigid and unrealistic. I would take this as a light-hearted fun way to get a different perspective on your wardrobe. I hope you have fun along the way!

Hi, Theresa! I kind of worked through the Seamwork program just before I retired. I agree it seemed pretty basic. It did get me thinking about my approach to my wardrobe. I've also read "The Curated Closet". That was a lot! I didn't get very far with that one because it is so detailed. I have the Love to Sew booklet and I might just join in. This is a great approach to Me Made May. X

@@ruthwilson6524 good words! I think any word can be interpreted in different ways but that also makes it more flexible. You can interpret it whichever way works for you.

I am curious to see what you label your wardrobe. I don't know for sure, but I think it is as a consistent grouping. I know right away what you'll pick and like based on previous items. It is a lot different than me, probably opposite, lol, but always looks beautifully done and love how reflective and informative your choices are. It will be a helpful and informative video month.

@@LostMyThread You know I have not gotten my "labels" figured out yet. I have not taken the time to analyze my wardrobe and likes and dislikes. I am still in the process. I really NEED to do that though because I know it will help eliminate some of the misspending I do. When I got my colors do a few years ago, that helped me SO VERY MUCH with fabric shopping and I know the style labels will help so much with the new pattern shopping.

One KZfaq content that also was helpful for me was Hannah Louise Poston’s episode on matching your wardrobe with your current lifestyle. Me Made May is pretty much anywhere you want it to be! Zoe started it on her blog and just encouraged people to join in and comment on the blog about how it was going for them. It did seem to migrate over to Instagram around 5 years ago. I've seen lots of KZfaqrs making videos about it for the last few years as well, though. There are no rules. It's all about what is going to help you hit your own personal pledge!
