Speaking as an SC State alum, I think all depends on the leadership of the band at the time. SC State has had a few leadership changes over these past few years and each director takes the band in the direction they decide. The late Mr. Roanld J. Sarjeant (A Famu alum) was band director of the SC State Marching 101 for over 30yrs before retiring. Mr. Eddie Ellis (Who came from Morris Brown College) became the director at the end of 2004 and departed after 2014. Mr. Ellis had most of his Morris Brown staff as well as a few assistant band directors who came from FAMU and the late Mr. Carnell Knighten (2010) from Southern. Then our school had drastic budget cuts following that year and the band took a major hit in funding and we have been rebuilding since then. During the Ellis era, we were over 300 in numbers at one point. I believe Mr. Ellis smallest version of the Marching 101 was around 225-230 in 2014. After Mr. Ellis, then came one of his former assistant directors John Robinson (also a Famu alum) became director in 2015 and departed I believe in 2017. During that interim, the band was briefly led by another assistant band director at the time. In 2018, the current band director, Dr. Patrick Moore came on board and his assistant band director is alum that marched under the Sarjeant era of the band. If you compare the sound within these various eras of band director changes, you will hear the changes in the band's sound. JSU has maintained the same leadership year in and year out so you will always know what to expect from their band. Dr. Little a Boom alum so he knows their band's sound. I do believe that if today's version of the Marching 101 was being directed by the late Mr. Sarjeant or Mr. Ellis, you would have a different assessment. In my opinion, our band was more intense during those two eras. Check out some of the videos of the late 80s and 90s under Mr. Sarjeant and then some of the videos from the Ellis era 2004-2014.

Fam, I appreciate y’all reaction… but comparing MEAC and SWAC is like comparing apples and oranges; both are uniquely different in sound and arrangements. NSU Legion is amazing and powerful. A&T is awesome too. Loud doesn’t make you better… or worse, just makes u different. Oh, and use JSU KZfaq Bands footage next time. They been head this up ✊🏽

It’s seems to be quite common that most MEAC people not all but must see SWAC bands and only see us playing LOUD. When they don’t actually listen to what we are playing WHILE playing loud. Yea one or two songs might just be LOUD that is what they were written for. But other songs just as loud with all kind of sauce sprinkled in there. We are battle bands. We play current stuff crank up and can still run marches and ballads. The best of all worlds. If you don’t like bands playing louder than mezzo-forte just say that.

Is loudess what it takes to be liked?. Musical is what's important. You won't go anywhere playing whole notes all the time. Each band is unique and that is what makes them who they are. All of them are good at what they do. It's how the music is interpreted.
