Measuring Fuel Consumption For My Mariner 6HP Outboard

Bit if a techie video this one but I thought it would be interesting to see if we could work out the rough fuel consumption the outboard gave us on our recent sea voyage.
I drain the 12l tank so I know what I used then we work out miles/NM and time etc so we can then plan where this outboard could take us if needed.
Enjoy!

Throttle setting is a huge factor in calculating your range. As you noted in your video increasing to full throttle resulted in very little speed increase. An interesting experiment would be to fill your small engine tank with 1/2 litre and then, tracking the distance, run at 1/2 throttle until all fuel is used up. Repeat at full throttle. Then re do your calculations to get a true full throttle consumption rate and a 1/2 throttle rate

Hi Glen. Yes, it's like anything else I guess. That little bit more in time or speed takes a lot more power, whether you're boating, cycling or driving. I have experimented with the Epropulsion too on the lake in very clam waters and to get that last .3KT you almost need 40% of the rest of the power. Being in a rush certainly costs money when motoring!!

Thanks for using Miles and Gallons for the metric handicapped.

Haha! Yes well, i'm not quite native when it comes to Knots and Nautical Miles. I htink on the sea its best to use them, but on the lake and doing stuff like this iI wanted to show it in KM and Miles too because thats what we all relate to. I'm British so i'm really messed up. Everything is Miles, but then Meters for the smaller stuff!!!

Probably gives an indication of cruising distance (approx). However, you may wish to get a WOT Wide Open Throttle consumption figure. Use 2/3rd of this as your range and you'll have some reserve for the 'when it hits the fan moments'. I actually carry way too much fuel but that's just me.

Good advice. My 12L tank seems to last forever but i've only really gone about 35kts in total with it in one trip so far. Next season we'll try for the Anglesey circumnavigation again and then I will probably need to be a bit more careful.

using strava or navionics to record actual trip is an ideal way of keeping tabs on stuff , i use it fir racing so i see where i went wrong or sailed too far on one tack etc

Yes that would be much better. In fact since this video, Savvy Navvy that I have been using improved a lot and now tracks you really well. I also use a neat little offline app that will spit out a GPX file you can just import into any mapping app, like Google Maps. Its really good as it doesn;t need to be connected to anything. This way you would get the proper route and distance, which is always surprisingly far more distance than you realised!!

Very interesting Dave. In my laser 16, i have no idea what the 2hp fuel consumption is. With my Shakespeare I use about 7 gals an hour at 22knts. However chop that up to 50knts and its 21 gals an hour 😮

FIrstly, wow does that boat do 50kts! Very impressive!!! Yes that little bit of extra speed is very costly on the fuel isn't it!

Would you need ear protection against engine noise, If you were to embark on a long journey?

Hi David. No it's not that loud and the 4 stroke Mariner is way quieter than that little 3.3HP 2 stroke I have. However it does get to you after a while, I much prefer getting the sails up and enjoying the wind as the only noise! Even worse is if the wind is the wrong way and you get a nice smell of fumes in the cockpit!!! I try to use the motor as little as possible. In fact if I were sailing alone and time/tides were no object, I'd very rarely use it. Maybe if I were bow into the wind or if there was no wind and needed to get to an anchorage for the night.

All that filling open containers back and forth with flammable liquid in an enclosed space makes me very nervous. Take care.

Hi Mark. Cheers for the comment. I had the garage door open a crack so I wasn't as novice as I could have been. Probably best to do it outside next time tho!!!

Of course, fuel consumption will be affected by your speed, sea state and the weather.

Yes I agree. I guess there's a lot of factors to it. I think next time I will try and track myself a bit more accurately and also make a note of tides etc. I was quite surprised at just how fast you can go with the tide!

That is a very uncertain way to measure anything.

@@SailingWithDave I always take engine running time , NEVER distance. Time is a constant and never changes unless an engine failure. Distance always changes due wind, current and drag. 25 % RPM =. X MINUTES 50 % RPM = X MINUTES 75 % RPM = X MINUTES 100 % RPM = X MINUTES This is why I have a stop watch installed. Just saying. Stay safe. Thanks 🙏 for sharing and happy sailing.

@@Colonia.4711Cheers for the advice on that. I can see why time is used over distance. Even going up and down waves muct increase your distance a lot more than you think.
