Ryan "Ol Cal" Callaghan travels to Wyoming with a few in antelope tags in his pocket. Upon arrival, Cal breaks down the highly contested corner crossing debate that originated not far from his hunting spot. With pronghorn aplenty, Cal can be patient and wait for a golden opportunity to fill his freezer. After a successful hunt, Cal shares his appreciation for the delectable meat with a simple and fresh way to indulge in speed goats. Presented by @weatherby

the fact that we have the Unlawful Enclosures act -- specifically to prevent the enclosure of public land by private owners -- and we're still dealing with corner crossing is, in my opinion, ridiculous. You want an easy solution? Here it is. If you are in a "corner locked" state, like WY, the state charges you for a stamp. Call it the "Corner Crossing Easement Stamp". Funds from the stamp do 3 things: they pay for corners to be properly surveyed and marked, they pay some small dividend to land-owners for the loss of ten feet of land to either side of a public-public corner, which effectively creates a 20' wide easement between corners, and it goes toward conservation work on the newly opened up public tracts of land. Either putting in water, or habitat, or recovery for various species, etc. There you go. Put it on the ballot -- and believe me, I hate ballot box biology but holy effin cripes, that's the only way those states are going to get un-land-locked. Everyone who buys a hunting license buys a "Corner Crossing Easement Stamp" and you phase it out over the next 10 years, or phase it into a "corner easement upkeep" fund or something.

I’ve said it before and gotten some flack for it…the #1 reason people stop hunting is because there’s no place to go. Hunting has become a rich man’s game in the US - you either own land, know somebody who will let you, or pay thousands of dollars for access. This is factually born out by the huge drop in the number of hunters over the last 30 years (except for a brief rebound during the pandemic). If the corner crossing does block all that public land… that be almost terminal for most people being able to access hunting. MeatEater needs to team up with the Sierra Club or some similarly well connected group in this issue - this is an issue where yall are pretty well aligned.
@D_Boone
@D_Boone 2 ай бұрын
Lol. They're simply not looking then. Unless you live in a few notable exceptions like Texas, public land is everywhere. I hunt public land exclusively and do very well, East Coast, Rockies, etc. The amount of public acres per hunter is only increasing as hunter numbers continue to decrease. I'm all for more public land and access, but pretending like publkc land is disappearing is simply stupid.
@carterwgtx
@carterwgtx 2 ай бұрын
@@D_Boone Well i do live in Texas (along with 29 million other people)...so yeah. But also the data simply does not bare out that hunter numbers are increasing - with a notable bump during the pandemic...the number of hunters and % of the population that hunts has fallen pretty much every year since the mid 1980s. Stabilizing now at about 12 million (ish). And most hunters are older people...not a huge number of kids getting into it. The % of hunters who actually hunt more than 5 days/year is rising - so those who do hunt are hunting opening weekend or 1 week a year. The most optimistic data interpretation is that hunting is holding steady as an activity. Fishing notably has gotten much more popular...because it's accessible.

@@D_Boone I think the public land is just disappearing slowly enough that people like yourself don't notice. It might not effect you, but two generations from now the great grandkids might not have a chance. Hunting only exists today because of protections put in place by hunters who realized land and game aren't limitless. If you're ok with public land shrinking because there is still lots left, than your not thinking about anyone but yourself.

Very nice shot Cal! I hope corner crossing gets more attention, even though I know WA state doesn't have alot of landlocked areas, most of the Puget sound is completely locked away from waterfowl hunters. I hope we can some day get some more access or at least have the public willing to let us access the water/shoreline.

Excellent episode on what might be my first western big game hunt. I have 5 points for deer 🦌 and pronghorn in Wyoming. So I should draw something decent. My biggest concern is exactly what you spoke on, pronghorn country is extremely checkerboard in these lower point units. I watched most of this last night and ended up having a dream about butchering up a pronghorn before finishing it this morning. 🍖🥩

I'm from Europe but every year when I drive through WY to turkey hunt and see the vast emptiness as far as the horizon, interspersed with countless gates and fences, my heart gets incredibly heavy. Millions of bison once grazed here and the land is still uninhabited but privately owned and simply abandoned. You can just feel that an essential part of the ecosystem is missing here. Very, very sad... Great documentary though!

In most canadian provinces you're not actually at liberty to run hunters and anglers off your land if they are on foot and taking the most reasonable route from a public road to public land or waterway. I've never understood why americans are so freaked out by strangers walking on their land in the middle of nowhere and how it is even illegal. In Finland we have this "jokamiehenoikeudet" or "every mans rights" which basically mean that anyone can walk, pick berries or mushrooms etc. on anyones land as long as they do no harm to the vegetation. It is completely normal to have people walk in your forest or on the edge of your fields and nobody is offended. I mean, what harm does it do in a place like where Cal is right now if some people walk through your property?
@swamptosoundadventures8337

You could have a massive deer patterned and some random person scare it to the next property, I don’t even walk around carelessly on my land myself for fear of that, I’d definitely lose my $hit if some random person did. I definitely agree that corner crossing should be legal and public land should be accessible, but that could be via a right away, the public should never be allowed to walk freely on private property, the whole idea of that is just disgusting
