Getter Robo is a cosmic horror story masquerading as a fun (if dark and violent) mecha adventure. Getter Rays are an unstoppable eldritch abomination that have chosen the human race as their vessel, and they will not stop until they have consumed all of existance. Viewed through that lens, Ryoma and co. are villian protagonists who unwittingly are fighting to ensure the destruction of everything but Getter. This is, of course, what makes this series so damn awesome.

It's kinda hilarious how in Getter Robo, _humanity_ is the cosmic horror inflicted upon the universe. Or at least part of the cosmic horror.

That's the genius! Men have literally sold their souls to getter rays in exchange for protection and comfort. In the series there is a thinly veiled critic on the usage of nuclear power and tecnology, how humanity uses it and the damage that can create.

@@arx3516 I'm pretty sure there's also a criticism to the idea of shunning the unknown, and also rushing into things you don't know enough about. I'm pretty sure between that, the idea of progressiveness the series seems to want to promote, and the idea that humanity is at its best when we're actually working together, there seems to be a message that we shouldn't stop moving forward, but that moderaton should be applied.

So basically, the Getter Rays are the opposite of the Ide. Both are these incredibly powerful cosmic energies yet instead of forsaking humanity for their violent ways, it sides with and embraces them for the same reasons.

Honestly a crossover of the two would be good, since it would basically be life's desire to evolve at all costs, causing violence to do so, against a being that will restart evolution to stop violence.

Getter Robo Arc specifically states that Getter Emperor’s memories suddenly jump to Mars at some point, so that basically seems to confirm that Emperor is a direct result of Shin’s evolution at the end of Go. Considering how Arc ends, my guess is that the reason why Emperor doesn’t really recognize the Arc team is because they’re more involved with Shin Dragon/Saint Dragon...whatever it is

NerdyPro Getter Robo Saga contains 5 parts. I would recommend you just read them in ascending order. 1. Getter Robo 2. Getter Robo G 3. Shin Getter Robo 4. Getter Robo Go 5. Getter Robo Arc You can easily find translated chapters on Mangafox or Kissmanga. After which, you can give Getter Robo Anthology a read as its extra stuff.

It's fortunate for us that Ken Ishikawa gave his blessing that the series move towards this direction. Dinosaurs die and we flourish and continue to do so. Loved that idea!

If Getter Emperor is the Super Robot equivalent of an Eldritch god, I can only imagine what it would look like to see Getter Emperor fighting H.P. Lovecrafts pantheon of deities.

Should've started this a long time ago bro, can't wait for more! Personally, I love that they kept the Getter Emperor so ambiguous. He's the mythical, all-powerful being in the world of Getter and Super Robots in general. He should be interpreted differently by different author who took on Getter, and that we never need to know the limit of its power (if there's even any limit). With that said, I still dream of the day SRW does its own version of Getter Emperor and make it playable. As strong as Shin Getter already is, I feel like we need something to match Mazinger ZERO.

Good God men! Do you want the universe to collapse on itself?! Also hate to say but there's a reason why they probably won't fight. Go has said between Getter and Mazinger? It's the Unstoppable Force, Getter Robo, meets the Immovable object, Mazinger, so what would both do? Simple. Surrender... or team up and fuck the galaxy over sideways.

Spiral energy is more neutral and an actual energy. It can be used for either good or evil. Getter Rays however is clearly far more sinister, destructive, and possibly even sentient. Unlike Spiral energy, Getter Rays is not a tool and you are not in control.

A lot of Gurren Lagann was taken from Getter Robo. Gurren Lagann’s creator even said that Getter Robo was his favorite series and cited it as his main inspiration

oh shit waddup But seriously this was awesome. The reason I greatly love the Getter Emperor is because I am a fan of Lovecraft who created such popular fictional beings like Cuthulu. The Emperor is very lovecraftian, being shrouded in mystery and beyond our understanding. It is neither good or evil, it simply exists as a force of nature and there's nothing we can truly do against it. One can only hope that they do not get in the path of the Emperor just like Cuthulu, we're just small and insignificant to its greater plans. One thing I do want to note; as people like to make vs debates which is fine as it can be fun, but beings like the Emperor who truly cannot be measured can't clearly be calculated in such a debate. As it stands now, the Emperor is a mystery which is from a future we will never be a part of or ever know much about, and that is honestly the funnest part about lovecraft archetypes. If by any chance this may sadden you comment section, the last thing I want to say is simple: Once a lovecraftian creature can be explained and put into our understanding, it is no longer a mystery and no longer holds the same power and awe we once enjoyed.

Getter Emperor explained in shorter terms: a massive being with immense announcements of power and can absorb absolutely anything including things 100x larger then Emperor and if the Emperor evolves and grows enough it can be bigger than the core of existence and can become a threat to all the realities. (Also many versions of Emperor including New Getter Emperor which is the definition of “nightmare fuel” and all of the Emperors has a getter ray shield which practically makes them invincible and basically everything to do with manipulating space)

They probably could have thrown in Getter Emperor in the SRW that featured TTGL's big final battle. I don't know any Japanese to know is if that game actually acknowledges that Spiral Energy and Getter Rays are really the same fucking thing, but I'd actually love to see SRW revisit TTGL and have a storyline where Anti-Spirals are proven right as the "Spiral Nemesis," AKA, Getter Emperor, is born and you actually have to somehow prevent it from consuming the universe.

I disagree strongly about making Getter Emperor have any appearance other than concepts. The whole point of the Emperor itself is that its power cannot be even be understood in the minds of mere humans, kind of like Cthulu.

I just recently watched Space Runaway Ideon. If you like the story behind the Getter Rays, I would recommend it. Similarly it deals with a Energy source that is nigh infinite but seems to have a mind of it's own. Both this and the Getter series at times seem more akin to Lovecraftian horrors than super robot show.

One thing I can say about Getter Emperor, he cannot be damaged unlike TTGL even at it's size was damaged and Simon had to go one on one. Getter Emperor can just let out a getter beam other getters will be reborn in worlds and dimensions and back him up again it's truly unstoppable.

This was a great first episode! By far the most thorough summary I've found of the Emperor yet (since his most involved manga appearance was never finished). Do you think you could talk about Mazinger ZERO, or is there not enough info yet to build off of?

Well, this is a pretty good introduction to getter robo if anyone needs one. Getter Robo Armageddon, despite the story problems is really fun to watch, as is the manga, its great! So yeah, thanks for introducing me to this series D18, no offense in particular, but I like this series way more than evangelion, considering the fact the characters are more fun in getter robo. By the way, director for eva, I really liked shin godzilla, so I didn't mean to offend you if you are reading this. But, I went with the music of getter robo Armageddon and Ryoma and Go just being insanely awesome characters.

You know, I look at this, and I gotta wonder if it's all a time loop. The Getter Rays that started it all... what it they came from Emperor? I mean, with no real place to go once you hit 'I'm a universe' (nothing left to eat and only Entropy out there), it would make sense that it may decide to go Big Bang and create a new universe or even a few (who knows with it's potential) and leave a spreading of Getter Rays out to start it all over again. Or you know, time shenanigans, or another 'Getter' of similar power did was Emperor did to other galaxies (that does leave the idea of 'what would this 'being' be and why isn't it about when Emperor is?). Hmm hmm, questions and theories for later.

Came late to this party as I saw your comment on a video from the new SRW V game. I too am a huge fan of the Getter Robo series as well as other countless mecha in the Super Robot Wars Series. Having watched most of the anime growing up, my own conclusion is that the Getter Emperor is indeed a force of destruction that is to be feared much like the Mazinger and GaoGaiGar. However in the end it is the humans who wield and direct the destructive power, in this case the Getter Rays. I loved the ending to Armageddon where Ryouma and co. have to stay in the rip of time and space to battle beings that abuse the power of the Getter Rays. Locked in an eternal struggle to ensure the safety of the universe, countless humans or getter teams from different time and space (dimensions?) battle the "invaders" that have evolved differently. So to me there are different Ryoumas, Hayatos, Benkeis, and even Musashis. Although both the original Ryouma and Armageddon Ryouma have the best getter beam battle cry! Finally, Black Getter is the best! Side note, I'm quite sad Gurren Lagann is not in the SRW V series and Grendizer is also due for an appearance. TL;DR well done and continue with the videos!

Great First Video, Seems like Ishikawa also created the inspiration for the Ide 1. They are both sentient energy forms 2. Both help humanity while at the same time being implied to be using humanity for it's own goals 3. Both are very volatile and unpredictable The fact that Arc ended means that we will never know the true limit of the Emperor, if it has one.

Yes, but with a few adjustments. getter does not use humanity for his own purposes. in their goals he uses and humanity, and dinosaurs, and demons, and country Andromeda. Everyone. And Yes,getter is not energy. it's everything in the universe. and what about the unpredictability-reading the manga I wonder how Ishikawa gorgeous manga did. every time I find something new.

As I remember (but it could be a translation error), Emperor's Fate it's to consume everything and then move into a new universe, in the form of getter rays, in order to repeat an infinite cycle of creation and feeding. And if Getter exist in a universe, first or later, Emperor will become a reality, because it's not just a living being, but a singularity.

this is super awesome and informative!! good job explaining the bat shit crazy story from getter series. I always loved the ova series because its more adult oriented as depicted in the manga. but the manga itself is very hard to find, the japanese text is quite hardcore. with your explanation, i got a better idea of the getter universe. You should do the mazinkaiser! the mangas for mazinkaiser is pretty fucked up but awesome too lol!

Spiral Rays are basically watered down Getter Rays, this is basically confirmed from everything stated about Spiral Rays and their potential versus Getter Rays. Getter Emperor would probably make a "Getter Space" and evolve it's enemies some actual instinct to not fuck with it, that or wipe them out for they are attempting to halt evolution.

Jetfire48 umm....STGGL have HAX like Spiral energy and it make Gurren lagan-....no..... and make Simon so powerful that he can control a concept of Probability....make him can do the "impossible" with enough of Spiral energy seriously! STGGL is overrate, because in the end is not a STGGL that defeat Anti-Spiral but it a Simon himself that defeat the Anti-spiral... but yeah! Simon still lose EG demonbane and Getter emperror due to not enough feat. (Getter Emperror have much better feats and more screen time xD and Elder god demonbane......this dude can fight with lovecraft god....you know the one that is a High outer verse being.)
